Self-propulsion of pure water droplets by spontaneous Marangoni stress driven motion
We report spontaneous motion in a fully bio-compatible system consisting of
pure water droplets in an oil-surfactant medium of squalane and monoolein.
Water from the droplet is solubilized by the reverse micellar solution,
creating a concentration gradient of swollen reverse micelles around each
droplet. The strong advection and weak diffusion conditions allow for the first
experimental realization of spontaneous motion in a system of isotropic
particles at sufficiently large P\'eclet number according to a straightforward
generalization of a recently proposed mechanism. Experiments with a highly
concentrated solution of salt instead of water, and tetradecane instead of
squalane, confirm the above mechanism. The present swimming droplets are able
to carry external bodies such as large colloids, salt crystals, and even cells.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
CHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION BY GC-MS FROM THE AERIAL PARTS OF FAGONIA LONGISPINA (ZYGOPHYLLACEAE)
Objective: The objective was to characterize the phytochemical constituents in ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extract from the aerial parts of Fagonia longispina(zygophyllaceae) by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).Methods: The dried powder of the aerial parts of F. lonjispina was extracted exhaustively with ethanol. The extract was concentrated, diluted withwater and partitioned with EtOAc. The residue of the EtOAc extract was performed using a GC-MS.Results: Chemical constituents of the EtOAcextract of F. Longispina Family (Zygophylaceae) were identified by GC-MS and their relative concentrationswere determined. F. Longispina extract contained 12 compounds: Cis-4-(4 -T-butylcyclohexyl)-4-methyl-2-pentanone (33.33%), 4beta-(tert-butyl)1alpha-(1methylvinyl)cyclohexanemethanol (09.52%), cyclohexyl-2-methylenebutanylketone(14.28%),trans-4-(–t-butylcyclohexyl)-4-methyl2-pentanone(9.52%),2,6,10-trimetyl,14-Ethylne-14pentadecene (6.66%), 2-decen-1-ol(cas) (4.76%), 3,7,11,15-tetramethyl-2-hexadecen-1-ol(2.85%),2-nonen-1-ol (4.76%), citronellylacetate(2.85%), tetratetracontane(3.38%), hexatriacontane(cas) (3.38%), and phytolacetate(4.76%).'Conclusions: This GC-MS study helps to predict the formula and structure of phytoconstituents which can be used as drugs, and further investigationmay leads to the development of drug formulation. Is there an effect of electromagnetic waves from base stations on the breeding success of Ciconia ciconia ciconia in Algeria?
New nest supports used by the white stork Ciconia ciconia ciconia (Linnaeus, 1775) are mobile phone network relay antennas, which are not without danger because they emit electromagnetic waves that can have a major, although insidious, impact on the species. The aim of this study is to assess the effects of electromagnetic waves from mobile phone network base stations on white stork reproduction. We monitored the breeding phenology of the storks as a function of the distance of their nests from the base stations over 2 consecutive seasons, 2020 and 2021. The work took place in the North-East of Algeria, in Annaba and El-Tarf provinces. The nests were counted and divided into 3 distinct groups. The first is located on the relay antennae, the second less than 200 m and the third more than 300 m from the antennae. We calculated nest occupancy, number of young in the nest and number of nests without young. The results show that nests located directly on base stations have a reduced clutch size, not exceeding two storks and a low reproductive success since the majority of nests (51.9%) remained without young. The number of young storks tends to increase in nests far from base stations. Broods with 3 and 4 young are generally those located more than 300 m from relay antennas
Parallel Evaluation of Multi-join Queries
A number of execution strategies for parallel evaluation of multi-join queries have been proposed in the literature. In this paper we give a comparative performance evaluation of four execution strategies by implementing all of them on the same parallel database system, PRISMA/DB. Experiments have been done up to 80 processors. These strategies, coming from the literature, are named: Sequential Parallel, Synchronous Execution, Segmented Right-Deep, and Full Parallel. Based on the experiments clear guidelines are given when to use which strategy.

Global Existence and Regularity for the 3D Stochastic Primitive Equations of the Ocean and Atmosphere with Multiplicative White Noise
The Primitive Equations are a basic model in the study of large scale Oceanic
and Atmospheric dynamics. These systems form the analytical core of the most
advanced General Circulation Models. For this reason and due to their
challenging nonlinear and anisotropic structure the Primitive Equations have
recently received considerable attention from the mathematical community.
In view of the complex multi-scale nature of the earth's climate system, many
uncertainties appear that should be accounted for in the basic dynamical models
of atmospheric and oceanic processes. In the climate community stochastic
methods have come into extensive use in this connection. For this reason there
has appeared a need to further develop the foundations of nonlinear stochastic
partial differential equations in connection with the Primitive Equations and
more generally.
In this work we study a stochastic version of the Primitive Equations. We
establish the global existence of strong, pathwise solutions for these
equations in dimension 3 for the case of a nonlinear multiplicative noise. The
proof makes use of anisotropic estimates, estimates on the

Comprehensive Analysis of Phytochemical Composition, Antioxidant Potential, and Antibacterial Activity of <em>T. polium</em>
\ua9 2024 by the authors.This study aims to thoroughly examine the chemicals and effects of the ethanol extract from T. polium’s upper parts. We used the Soxhlet method for extraction, resulting in an extract with a significant yield of 20.6%. Qualitative analysis identified a variety of compounds, such as tannins, saponins, reducing compounds, terpenoids, quinones, and alkaloids. In quantitative analysis using the colorimetric method, we found the extract was rich in total flavonoids (20.78 mg equivalent QE/g DW extract) and total polyphenols (227.43 mg equivalent GAE/g DW extract). To assess antioxidant potential, we used the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) method, with ascorbic acid and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) as standards. The extract showed moderate activity in both the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and FRAP methods at concentrations of 65 \ub5g/mL and 21 mg/mL, respectively. Additionally, we tested the ethanolic extract against various bacteria using the disk diffusion technique on agar medium. The results indicated that the T. polium extract had moderate effectiveness against Gram-negative bacteria like Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027 and Escherichia coli ATCC 8739, as well as Gram-positive bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 and Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633. We further investigated the composition of the ethanolic extract through LC-MS/MS analysis, establishing a detailed profile of phenolic compounds, with six flavonoids identified as the main polyphenolic constituents. In silico pharmacodynamics, toxicity profile and biological activities of the Saharan medicinal plant Limoniastrum feei
ABSTRACT In-silico study was performed to find the pharmacodynamics, toxicity profiles and biological activities of three phytochemicals isolated from Limoniastrum feei (Plumbagenaceae). Online pharmacokinetic tools were used to estimate the potential of Quercetin, kaempferol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (astragalin) and quercitin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside as specific drugs. Then the prediction of potential targets of these compounds were investigated using PharmMapper. Auto-Dock 4.0 software was used to investigate the different interactions of these compounds with the targets predicted earlier. The permeability of quercetin was found within the range stated by Lipinski ׳s rule of five. Hematopoietic prostaglandin (PG) D synthase (HPGDS), farnesyl diphosphate synthetase (FPPS) and the deoxycytidine kinase (DCK) were potential targets for quercetin, astragalin and quercetin 7, respectively. Quercetin showed antiallergic and anti-inflammatory activity, while astragalin and quercetin 7 were predicted to have anticancer activities. The activity of Astragalin appeared to be mediated by FPPS inhibition. The inhibition of DCK was predicted as the anticancer mechanisms of quercetin 7. The compounds showed interesting interactions and satisfactory binding energies when docked into their targets. These compounds are proposed to have activities against a variety of human aliments such as allergy, tumors, muscular dystrophy, and diabetic cataracts
Assessing the Effects of Climate on Host-Parasite Interactions: A Comparative Study of European Birds and Their Parasites
[Background]
Climate change potentially has important effects on distribution, abundance, transmission and virulence of parasites in wild populations of animals.
[Methodology/Principal Finding]
Here we analyzed paired information on 89 parasite populations for 24 species of bird hosts some years ago and again in 2010 with an average interval of 10 years. The parasite taxa included protozoa, feather parasites, diptera, ticks, mites and fleas. We investigated whether change in abundance and prevalence of parasites was related to change in body condition, reproduction and population size of hosts. We conducted analyses based on the entire dataset, but also on a restricted dataset with intervals between study years being 5–15 years. Parasite abundance increased over time when restricting the analyses to datasets with an interval of 5–15 years, with no significant effect of changes in temperature at the time of breeding among study sites. Changes in host body condition and clutch size were related to change in temperature between first and second study year. In addition, changes in clutch size, brood size and body condition of hosts were correlated with change in abundance of parasites. Finally, changes in population size of hosts were not significantly related to changes in abundance of parasites or their prevalence.
[Conclusions/Significance]
Climate change is associated with a general increase in parasite abundance. Variation in laying date depended on locality and was associated with latitude while body condition of hosts was associated with a change in temperature. Because clutch size, brood size and body condition were associated with change in parasitism, these results suggest that parasites, perhaps mediated through the indirect effects of temperature, may affect fecundity and condition of their hosts. The conclusions were particularly in accordance with predictions when the restricted dataset with intervals of 5–15 years was used, suggesting that short intervals may bias findings.The Academy of Finland is acknowledged for a grant to TE (project 8119367) and EK (project 250709).
