Enhanced volcanic activity and long-term warmth in the middle Eocene revealed by mercury and osmium isotopes from IODP Expedition 369 Site U1514
Rapid plate reorganization may have influenced global climate during the Eocene; however, its linkage remains poorly constrained, particularly during the middle Eocene. To elucidate this tectonic–climatic relationship, here, we conducted a comprehensive analysis based on high-resolution mercury (Hg) and osmium (Os) abundance and isotope data obtained from the complete Eocene sedimentary sequence of Site U1514, drilled in the Mentelle Basin off southwest Australia. The Hg signals in this sedimentary sequence, which are characterized by significantly high enrichment and insignificant mass-independent fractionation (Δ199Hg) signal, confirm that the middle Eocene (∼45–38 Ma) was a period of persistent, increased volcanism, accompanied by intense tectonic activity. In particular, a remarkable seafloor volcanic eruption persisted for approximately 1.5 million years (∼42.0–40.5 Ma), immediately preceding the Middle Eocene Climate Optimum (MECO). Contemporaneously, the trends toward a slightly more radiogenic seawater 187Os/188Os (Osi) composition denote the prevalence of intensified continental weathering under a warm, humid climate during the middle Eocene, a phenomenon particularly evident during the MECO. Importantly, the Hg and Os records from Site U1514 reveal the occurrence of a multi-million-year warming reversal amid the long-term Eocene cooling trend, which likely contributed to significant CO2 reduction during the late Eocene. These findings significantly enhance our understanding of Eocene climate dynamics, which are fundamentally linked to intensive tectonic-driven volcanic activity and associated continental chemical weathering
Nonlinear Analytical Model for Predicting Magnet Loss in Surface-Mounted Permanent-Magnet Motors
This article develops a nonlinear analytical model (NAM) for predicting the magnet loss of surface-mounted permanent-magnet (PM) motors considering nonlinearity effect and slotting effect. The analytical expression of vector magnetic potential in the PM region is derived from Hague's equation for slotless air-gap, and then, it is extended for slotted air-gap based on the conformal mapping method. The PMs, iron nonlinearity, and winding current contributing to the eddy current are all represented by equivalent current in the analytical model. The key of the proposed model is to solve the equivalent current of iron nonlinearity from the improved magnetic circuit model (IMCM) of iron region, where the air flux source is proposed to replace the air reluctance. It is found that the iron saturation can decrease the amplitude of flux density and therefore reduce the magnet loss. Based on the NAM, the magnet loss can be obtained with high accuracy and high efficiency, which is a powerful tool for the optimization of magnet loss in the motor design. The effectiveness of the proposed model is verified by the finite-element method
Topography, structural and exhumation history of the Admiralty Mountains region, northern Victoria Land, Antarctica
International audience; The Admiralty Mountains region forms the northern termination of the northern Victoria Land, Antarctica. Few quantitative data are available to reconstruct the Cenozoic morpho-tectonic evolution of this sector of the Antarctic plate, where the Admiralty Mountains region forms the northern termination of the western shoulder of the Mesozoic-Cenozoic West Antarctica Rift System. In this study we combine new low-temperature thermochronological data (apatite fission-track and (U-Th-Sm)/He analyses) with structural and topography analysis. The regional pattern of the fission-track ages shows a general tendency to older ages (80–60 Ma) associated with shortened mean track-lengths in the interior, and younger fission-track ages clustering at 38–26 Ma with long mean track-lengths in the coastal region. Differently from other regions of Victoria Land, the younger ages are found as far as 50–70 km inland. Single grain apatite (U-Th-Sm)/He ages cluster at 50–30 Ma with younger ages in the coastal domain. Topography analysis reveals that the Admiralty Mountains has high local relief, with an area close to the coast, 180 km long and 70 km large, having the highest local relief of >2500 m. This coincides with the location of the youngest fission-track ages. The shape of the area with highest local relief matches the shape of a recently detected low velocity zone beneath the northern TAM, indicating that high topography of the Admiralty Mountains region is likely sustained by a mantle thermal anomaly. We used the obtained constraints on the amount of removed crustal section to reconstruct back-eroded profiles and calculate the erosional load in order to test flexural uplift models. We found that our back-eroded profiles are better reproduced by a constant elastic thickness of intermediate values (Te = 20–30 km). This suggests that, beneath the Admiralty Mountains, the elastic properties of the lithosphere are different with respect to other TAM sectors, likely due to a stationary Cenozoic upper mantle thermal anomaly in the region
Association between triglyceride glucose-body mass index and heart failure in subjects with diabetes mellitus or prediabetes mellitus: a cross-sectional study
BackgroundThe triglyceride glucose-body mass index (TyG-BMI) is a surrogate indicator of insulin resistance. However, the association of TyG-BMI with heart failure (HF) in individuals with diabetes mellitus or prediabetes mellitus is unknown.MethodsThis study included 7,472 participants aged 20–80 years old with prediabetes or diabetes from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007–2018). The TyG-BMI was calculated as Ln [triglyceride (mg/dL) × fasting blood glucose (mg/dL)/2] × BMI, and individuals were categorized into tertiles based on TyG-BMI levels. The relationship of TyG-BMI with HF was analyzed using multiple logistic regression models. Subgroup analyses were stratified by gender, age, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus status.ResultsThis cross-sectional study had 7,472 participants (weighted n = 111,808,357), including 329 HF participants. Participants with a high TyG-BMI were prone to HF. The highest tertile group with a fully adjusted model was more likely to have HF compared to the lowest tertile group (odds ratio [OR], 2.645; 95% CI, 1.529–4.576). Restricted cubic spline analysis showed a significant dose-response relationship between TyG-BMI and HF (P < 0.001). In subgroup analyses, similar results were seen in terms of age (≥50 years old), gender, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus status.ConclusionA high TyG-BMI is significantly associated with HF risk in participants with diabetes mellitus or prediabetes mellitus
Quantitative assessment of retinal microvascular remodeling in eyes that underwent idiopathic epiretinal membrane surgery
Purpose: To explore the surgical outcomes of the macular microvasculature and visual function in eyes with idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM) using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography angiography (SD-OCTA).Methods: This observational, cross-sectional study included 41 participants who underwent iERM surgery with a 3-month (3M) follow-up. Forty-one healthy eyes formed the control group. The assessments included best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and mean sensitivity (MS) by microperimetry and SD-OCTA assessment of vessel tortuosity (VT), vessel density (VD), foveal avascular zone, and retinal thickness (RT).Results: The findings showed statistically significant differences in VT, foveal avascular zone parameters, RT, BCVA, and MS between the iERM and control groups (p < 0.05). After iERM surgery, the macular VT, SCP VD, and RT decreased significantly (p < 0.01) while the DCP VD increased (p = 0.029). The BCVA improved significantly (p < 0.001) and was associated with the MS (rs = −0.377, p = 0.015). MS was associated with the SCP VD and RT at 3M (SCP VD rs = 0.511, p = 0.001; RT rs = 0.456, p = 0.003). In the superior quadrant, the MS improved significantly (p < 0.001) and the improvement of MS was associated with the reduction of VT (β = −0.330, p = 0.034).Conclusion: Microcirculatory remodeling and perfusion recovery were observed within 3 months after iERM surgery. VT was a novel index for evaluating the morphology of the retinal microvasculature in eyes with iERM and was associated with MS in the superior quadrant
Development and validation of a nomogram to predict the five-year risk of revascularization for non-culprit lesion progression in STEMI patients after primary PCI
BackgroundAcute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients after primary PCI were readmitted for revascularization due to non-culprit lesion (NCL) progression.ObjectiveTo develop and validate a nomogram that can accurately predict the likelihood of NCL progression revascularization in STEMI patients following primary PCI.MethodsThe study enrolled 1,612 STEMI patients after primary PCI in our hospital from June 2009 to June 2018. Patients were randomly divided into training and validation sets in a 7:3 ratio. The independent risk factors were determined by LASSO regression and multivariable logistic regression analysis. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was utilized to develop a nomogram, which was then evaluated for its performance using the concordance statistics, calibration plots, and decision curve analysis (DCA).ResultsThe nomogram was composed of five predictors, including age (OR: 1.007 95% CI: 1.005–1.009, P < 0.001), body mass index (OR: 1.476, 95% CI: 1.363–1.600, P < 0.001), triglyceride and glucose index (OR: 1.050, 95% CI: 1.022–1.079, P < 0.001), Killip classification (OR: 1.594, 95% CI: 1.140–2.229, P = 0.006), and serum creatinine (OR: 1.007, 95% CI: 1.005–1.009, P < 0.001). Both the training and validation groups accurately predicted the occurrence of NCL progression revascularization (The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values, 0.901 and 0.857). The calibration plots indicated an excellent agreement between prediction and observation in both sets. Furthermore, the DCA demonstrated that the model exhibited clinical efficacy.ConclusionA convenient and accurate nomogram was developed and validated for predicting the occurrence of NCL progression revascularization in STEMI patients after primary PCI

Distinct control mechanism of fine-grained sediments from Yellow River and Kyushu supply in the northern Okinawa Trough since the last glacial
© 2017. American Geophysical Union. All Rights Reserved. High-resolution multiproxy records, including clay minerals and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopes of the clay-sized silicate fraction of sediments from IODP Site U1429 in the northern Okinawa Trough, provide reliable evidence for distinct control mechanism on fine-grained sediments input from the Yellow River and the southern Japanese Islands to the northern Okinawa Trough since 34 ka BP. Provenance analysis indicates that the sediments were mainly derived from the Yellow River and the island of Kyushu. Since the last glacial, clay-sized sediments transported from the Yellow River to the study site were strongly influenced by sea-level fluctuation. During low sea-level stage (∼34–14 ka BP), the paleo-Yellow River mouth was positioned closer to the northern Okinawa Trough, favoring large fluvial discharge or even direct input of detrital sediments, which resulted about four times more flux of clay-sized sediments supply to the study area as during the relatively high sea-level stage (∼14–0 ka BP). The input of Kyushu-derived clay-sized sediments to the study site was mainly controlled by the Kuroshio Current and Tsushima Warm Current intensity, with increased input in phase with weakened Kuroshio Current/Tsushima Warm Current. Our study suggests that the Kuroshio Current was very likely flowed into the Okinawa Trough and thus influenced the fine-grained sediment transport in the area throughout the last glacial and deglacial. During ∼34–11 ka BP, the Kyushu clay-sized sediment input was mainly controlled by the Kuroshio Current. Since ∼11 ka BP, the occurrence of Tsushima Warm Current became important in influencing the Kyushu fine-grained sediment input to the northern Okinawa Trough
Asian dust input in the western Philippine Sea: Evidence from radiogenic Sr and Nd isotopes
The radiogenic strontium (Sr) and neodymium (Nd) isotope compositions of the detrital fraction of surface and subsurface sediments have been determined to trace sediment provenance and contributions from Asian dust off the east coast of Luzon Islands in the western Philippine Sea. The Sr and Nd isotope compositions have been very homogenous near the east coast of the Luzon Islands during the latest Quaternary yielding relatively least radiogenic Sr (87Sr/86Sr = 0.70453 to 0.70491) and more radiogenic Nd isotope compositions (εNd(0) = +5.3 to +5.5). These isotope compositions are similar to Luzon rocks and show that these sediments were mainly derived from the Luzon Islands. In contrast, the Sr and Nd isotope compositions of sediments on the Benham Rise and in the Philippine Basin are markedly different in that they are characterized by overall more variable and more radiogenic Sr isotope compositions (87Sr/86Sr = 0.70452 to 0.70723) and less radiogenic Nd isotope compositions (εNd(0) = −5.3 to +2.4). The Sr isotope composition in the Huatung Basin is intermediate between those of the east coast of Luzon and Benham Rise, but shows the least radiogenic Nd isotope compositions. The data are consistent with a two end-member mixing relationship between Luzon volcanic rocks and eolian dust from the Asian continent, which is characterized by highly radiogenic Sr and unradiogenic Nd isotope compositions. The results show that Asian continental dust contributes about 10–50% of the detrital fraction of the sediments on Benham Rise in the western Philippine Sea, which offers the potentials to reconstruct the climatic evolution of eastern Asia from these sediments and compare this information to the records from the central and northern Pacific
