The aim of this study was to investigate two aspects: firstly to investigate children’s ability in solving addition problems. The second aim was to investigate the contribution of teaching interventions and specifically the contribution of physical representations manipulatives to develop children’s efforts to solve problems. The sample consisted of 12 children of a Greece public preschool classroom. The findings show that children responded positively to the problem solving. Graphically representing the solutions on paper sheet supported the children’s efforts. In addition, the forms of interaction played an important role for the positive outcome of the activities

The objective of this study was to investigate two aspects: firstly to investigate children's knowledge about the concept of number, and then to analyze children's strategies in solving problems including additions. Furthermore, we examined whether expedient teaching situations would provide more successful results. The research was carried out with the participation of 31 pupils 5 to 6 years old from Greek state kindergartens of the same area, bearing the same middle socioeconomic background. These subjects were participated in three different tash. The first aimed to investigate children's knowledge on concept of number and the others to examine children's ability in solving addition problems. Our findings highlight the important role of the communication framework in teaching, as it contributes to the acquisition of new knowledge

Clinical Significance of Serum Biomarkers in Pediatric Solid Mediastinal and Abdominal Tumors

Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among U.S. children between infancy and age 15. Despite successes in treating solid tumors such as Wilms tumor, disappointments in the outcomes of high-risk solid tumors like neuroblastoma have precipitated efforts towards the early and accurate detection of these malignancies. This review summarizes available solid tumor serum biomarkers with a special focus on mediastinal and abdominal cancers in children

Measurement as relational, intensive and inclusive: Towards a ‘minor’ mathematics

    Get PDF
Minor mathematics refers to the mathematical practices that are often erased by state-sanctioned curricular images of mathematics. We use the idea of a minor mathematics to explore alternative measurement practices. We argue that minor measurement practices have been buried by a ‘major’ settler mathematics, a process of erasure that distributes ‘sensibility’ and formulates conditions of mathematics dis/ability. We emphasize how measuring involves the making and mixing of analogies, and that this involves attending to intensive relationships rather than extensive properties. Our philosophical and historical approach moves from the archeological origins of human measurement activity, to pivotal developments in modern mathematics, to configurations of curriculum. We argue that the project of proliferating multiple mathematics is required in order to disturb narrow (and perhaps white, western, male) images of mathematics—and to open up opportunities for a more pluralist and inclusive school mathematics
