Cultural Intelligence (CQ) referring to the adaptation to cross-cultural situation, interacting and working effectively in cross-cultural situations is the subject of this study. Globalization and international activities of companies have increased the cross-cultural interaction and commercial links, which in turn have resulted in the need for knowledge and competence about different culture. Within these dynamics, the success of the managers who are in charge of international activities depends on their CQ. The studies related to CQ reveal that it helps to cope with multi-cultural situations, to perform in culturally diverse work groups, to manage culture shock and facilitate effective cross-cultural adjustment, decision making and performance. This study particularly investigates the role of CQ on Cross-Cultural Job Satisfaction (CCJS) and International Related Performance (IRP). The study also looks at the link between CCJS and IRP. A research model along with the related hypotheses was developed and tested based on the data collected through survey method from textile companies in Turkey. The results reveal that CQ is positively related to CCJS. The partial support is also obtained from the data regarding the link between CQ and IRP. In addition, the research finds no relationship between CCJS and IRP. The findings are discussed in relation to theory and practice in the conclusion part of the study

An Investigation into the Implications of Islamic Work Ethic (IWE) in the Workplace

There has been an increasing interest on the work ethics and its various aspects among the academicians and practitioners. This is partly because of the ethical scandals that have occurred in the recent years and got attention from media and public and therefore raised the questions regarding ethical standards of companies and its practical use in the business life. This interest has prompted several research into the topic both theoretical and practical levels. Although the studies have accumulated in the Western World, the studies coming from the developing countries are limited and thus call for the studies to further investigate the dynamics and implications of the work ethics. This study particularly pays attention to Islamic work ethic and aims to identify whether Islamic work ethic values differ across various demographic variables and firm characteristics. The study also investigates the relationship between the Islamic work ethic and innovation capability and firm performance. The study is supported with a field study conducted on the firms operating in KahramanmaraÅŸ in Turkey. The obtained data was analyzed by using Correlation, ANOVA, T-test and Regression in SPSS. The results showed that IWE values differ across some characteristic of the respondents and firms. The results also indicate the positive influence of IWE values on innovation capability and firm performance

The Effect of Organizational Culture on Firm Financial Performance: Evidence from a Developing Country

AbstractLiterature on organizational culture constantly reinforces the notion that organisational culture is necessary for effective functioning and performance of the organisations. Although numerous studies have been conducted to explore the relationship between organisational culture and performance, empirical findings seem to be mixed and inconclusive. This article attempts to further investigate the role of organisational culture on firm financial performance. Research hypotheses are developed from the related literatures and tested through the data collected from managers of the firms in Gaziantep in Turkey. Data is analysed via SPSS program using the regression analyses. The results show that organisational culture dimensions have no effect on firm financial performance. Considering the limitations of the current study, the findings need to be evaluated with caution. Discussions and implications of the results are provided in the conclusion part of the study

Effect of balance training on postural stability and walking in type 2 diabetic neuropathy

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of the visual based balance training in diabetic patient with peripheral neuropathy for postural stability and gait. Methods: Twenty diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy and twenty healthy adults with the same aged, weight and height as control group were included into the study. While the visual-supported computerized balance assessment system were evaluated before and after the training, the cases in control group was evaluated once time. In evaluation scope, the cases had sensation, leg and back muscle strength assessment before and after the training. After pre-training evaluations were completed the balance training were applied individually to the cases in the study group for three weeks. The post-training assessment results were compared as within and between groups. Results: According to pre and post training results, it was found that protective sensation, back and leg strength, unilateral stance, limits of the stability, gait tests statistically significantly improved (p 0.05). Conclusion: It was found that visually supported balance training improves the body oscillation which is a parameter of the postural stability and performance time with protective sensation, back and leg strength. Additionally, visually supported balance training should be in the physiotherapy applications diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy

Inoperable Isolated Cardiac Hydatid Cyst Controlled With Albendazole In An Older Adult With Dementia

Hydatid cyst, a human parasitic disease, remains a clinical problem in undeveloped and developing countries. Although liver and lungs are regular sites of infection, rarely other organs such as the heart can be involved. Herein, we report an isolated cardiac hydatid cyst in an 87-year-old man. He had a history of dementia for 5 years and no history for cardiac or pulmonary disease. He presented with exertional dyspnoea which continued up to 6 months. The diagnosis was made by echocardiography and computed tomography (CT). The patient was inoperable and was treated with albendazole 10 mg/kg for 6 months. After a 6-month follow-up, echocardiography revealed reduction in the size of the cyst. We believe this is the first documented case of cardiac hydatid cyst which regressed with only medical treatment in an older adult with dementia.WoSScopu

Factors affecting lifespan following below-knee amputation in diabetic patients

Introduction: Untreatable foot problems in diabetics may require lower extremity amputation, which has a high level of patient mortality. This high mortality rate is worse than most malignancies. The present study aimed to identify parameters that can be used to estimate survival in DM patients undergoing below-knee amputations for diabetic foot problems. Materials and methods: A total of 470 patients (299 males, 171 females) with a mean age of 64.32 years who underwent below-knee amputation for diabetic foot problems between 2004 and 2014 were enrolled in the study. The length of time from the operation to time of death was recorded in days. Patient details were obtained, including age during surgery, BMI, oral antidiabetic and insulin usage, dialysis therapy history, lower extremity endovascular intervention, previous amputation at the same extremity, the need for stump revision surgery during follow-up, and above-knee amputation at the same site. Biochemical test results of pre-operative HbAl c, ESR, and levels of CRP, BUN, and creatinine were also obtained. Results: A total of 333 patients (70.9%) died and 137 (29.1%) survived post-surgery. Survival rates were 90% in the first 7 days, 84% in the first 30 days, and 64% after the first year. Patient median life expectancy post-surgery was 930 106 days. Hemodialysis treatment (p = 0.001), endovascular intervention (p = 0.04), sex (p = 0.004), age (p = 0.001), BUN level (p = 0.001), and duration of insulin use (p = 0.003) were shown to be effective predictors of mortality. Conclusions: Life expectancy is low (<3 years) in DM patients requiring below-knee amputations for untreatable foot problems. Survival could be predicted by duration of insulin use, age, sex, and renal insufficiency. Level of evidence: Level IV, Therapeutic study. Genes that Affect Brain Structure and Function Identified by Rare Variant Analyses of Mendelian Neurologic Disease

    No full text
Development of the human nervous system involves complex interactions among fundamental cellular processes and requires a multitude of genes, many of which remain to be associated with human disease. We applied whole exome sequencing to 128 mostly consanguineous families with neurogenetic disorders that often included brain malformations. Rare variant analyses for both single nucleotide variant (SNV) and copy number variant (CNV) alleles allowed for identification of 45 novel variants in 43 known disease genes, 41 candidate genes, and CNVs in 10 families, with an overall potential molecular cause identified in >85% of families studied. Among the candidate genes identified, we found PRUNE, VARS, and DHX37 in multiple families and homozygous loss-of-function variants in AGBL2, SLC18A2, SMARCA1, UBQLN1, and CPLX1. Neuroimaging and in silico analysis of functional and expression proximity between candidate and known disease genes allowed for further understanding of genetic networks underlying specific types of brain malformations.
