Carbon Doping of MgB2 by Toluene and Malic-Acid-in-Toluene
The decomposition of malic acid in the presence of Mg and B was studied using
Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)
which revealed that malic acid reacted with Mg but not B. Also, the addition of
toluene to dissolve malic acid followed by subsequent drying resulted in no
reaction with Mg, indicating that the malic acid had decomposed during the
dissolution/drying stage. The total carbon contributed by toluene versus a
toluene/5 wt% malic acid mixture was measured using a LECO CS600 carbon
analyzer. The toluene sample contained ~0.4 wt% C while the toluene/malic acid
mixture had ~1.5 wt% C, demonstrating that the toluene contributed a
significant amount of carbon to the final product. Resistivity measurements on
powder-in-tube MgB2 monofilamentary wires established that the toluene/malic
acid doped sample had the highest Bc2. However, the toluene-only sample had the
highest transport Jc over most of the magnetic field range (0-9 T), equaled
only by that of toluene/malic acid sample in fields above 9 T.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl
Distribution of spectral weight in a system with disordered stripes
The ``band-structure'' of a disordered stripe array is computed and compared,
at a qualitative level, to angle resolved photoemission experiments on the
cuprate high temperature superconductors. The low-energy states are found to be
strongly localized transverse to the stripe direction, so the electron dynamics
is strictly one-dimensional (along the stripe). Despite this, aspects of the
two dimensional band-structure Fermi surface are still vividly apparent.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figure
Interacting Electrons on a Fluctuating String
We consider the problem of interacting electrons constrained to move on a
fluctuating one-dimensional string. An effective low-energy theory for the
electrons is derived by integrating out the string degrees of freedom to lowest
order in the inverse of the string tension and mass density, which are assumed
to be large. We obtain expressions for the tunneling density of states, the
spectral function and the optical conductivity of the system. Possible
connections with the phenomenology of the cuprate high temperature
superconductors are discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figur
Localized surface states in HTSC: Alternative mechanism of zero-bias conductance peaks
It is shown that the quasiparticle states localized in the vicinity of
surface imperfections of atomic size can be responsible for the zero-bias
tunneling conductance peaks in high-Tc superconductors. The contribution from
these states can be easily separated from other mechanisms using their
qualitatively different response on an external magnetic field.Comment: REVTeX, 4 pages, 2 figs; to be published in PR
Influence of impurity scattering on tunneling conductance in normal metal- d -wave superconductor junctions
Tunneling conductance spectra between a normal metal / d-wave superconductor
junction under the presence of bulk impurities in the superconductor are
studied. The quasiclassical theory has been applied to calculate the spatial
variation of the pair potential and the effect of impurity scattering has been
introduced by t-matrix approximation. The magnitude of a subdominant s-wave
component at the interface is shown to robust against the impurity scattering
while that for a subdominant -wave component is largely suppressed with
the increase of the impurity scattering rate. The zero-bias conductance peak
due to the zero-energy Andreev bound states is significantly broadened for the
case of Born limit impurity compared with that of unitary limit impurity.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
Pairing and Density Correlations of Stripe Electrons in a Two-Dimensional Antiferromagnet
We study a one-dimensional electron liquid embedded in a 2D antiferromagnetic
insulator, and coupled to it via a weak antiferromagnetic spin exchange
interaction. We argue that this model may qualitatively capture the physics of
a single charge stripe in the cuprates on length- and time scales shorter than
those set by its fluctuation dynamics. Using a local mean-field approach we
identify the low-energy effective theory that describes the electronic spin
sector of the stripe as that of a sine-Gordon model. We determine its phases
via a perturbative renormalization group analysis. For realistic values of the
model parameters we obtain a phase characterized by enhanced spin density and
composite charge density wave correlations, coexisting with subleading triplet
and composite singlet pairing correlations. This result is shown to be
independent of the spatial orientation of the stripe on the square lattice.
Slow transverse fluctuations of the stripes tend to suppress the density
correlations, thus promoting the pairing instabilities. The largest amplitudes
for the composite instabilities appear when the stripe forms an antiphase
domain wall in the antiferromagnet. For twisted spin alignments the amplitudes
decrease and leave room for a new type of composite pairing correlation,
breaking parity but preserving time reversal symmetry.Comment: Revtex, 28 pages incl. 5 figure
Evidence of Color Coherence Effects in W+jets Events from ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV
We report the results of a study of color coherence effects in ppbar
collisions based on data collected by the D0 detector during the 1994-1995 run
of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, at a center of mass energy sqrt(s) = 1.8
TeV. Initial-to-final state color interference effects are studied by examining
particle distribution patterns in events with a W boson and at least one jet.
The data are compared to Monte Carlo simulations with different color coherence
implementations and to an analytic modified-leading-logarithm perturbative
calculation based on the local parton-hadron duality hypothesis.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures. Submitted to Physics Letters
Search for Higgs bosons decaying to tautau pairs in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
We present a search for the production of neutral Higgs bosons decaying into
tautau pairs in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The
data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1, were collected by
the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We set upper limits at the
95% C.L. on the product of production cross section and branching ratio for a
scalar resonance decaying into tautau pairs, and we then interpret these limits
as limits on the production of Higgs bosons in the minimal supersymmetric
standard model (MSSM) and as constraints in the MSSM parameter space.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PL
Measurement of the photon-jet production differential cross section in collisions at \sqrt{s}=1.96~\TeV
We present measurements of the differential cross section dsigma/dpT_gamma
for the inclusive production of a photon in association with a b-quark jet for
photons with rapidities |y_gamma|< 1.0 and 30<pT_gamma <300 GeV, as well as for
photons with 1.5<|y_gamma|< 2.5 and 30< pT_gamma <200 GeV, where pT_gamma is
the photon transverse momentum. The b-quark jets are required to have pT>15 GeV
and rapidity |y_jet| < 1.5. The results are based on data corresponding to an
integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb^-1, recorded with the D0 detector at the
Fermilab Tevatron Collider at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. The measured cross
sections are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations
using different sets of parton distribution functions as well as to predictions
based on the kT-factorization QCD approach, and those from the Sherpa and
Pythia Monte Carlo event generators.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett.
Limits on anomalous trilinear gauge boson couplings from WW, WZ and Wgamma production in pp-bar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
We present final searches of the anomalous gammaWW and ZWW trilinear gauge
boson couplings from WW and WZ production using lepton plus dijet final states
and a combination with results from Wgamma, WW, and WZ production with leptonic
final states. The analyzed data correspond to up to 8.6/fb of integrated
luminosity collected by the D0 detector in pp-bar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96
TeV. We set the most stringent limits at a hadron collider to date assuming two
different relations between the anomalous coupling parameters
Delta\kappa_\gamma, lambda, and Delta g_1^Z for a cutoff energy scale Lambda=2
TeV. The combined 68% C.L. limits are -0.057<Delta\kappa_\gamma<0.154,
-0.015<lambda<0.028, and -0.008<Delta g_1^Z<0.054 for the LEP parameterization,
and -0.007<Delta\kappa<0.081 and -0.017<lambda<0.028 for the equal couplings
parameterization. We also present the most stringent limits of the W boson
magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PL
