    Coming Full Circle: Reflections and Inspirations from a Cystic Fibrosis Patient Scientist Panel

    Care for many progressive chronic diseases continues to improve, allowing patients to survive and thrive for longer periods of time1. People living with such conditions may now find themselves able to achieve long-term goals in education and career development2. Many people now occupy the dual roles of scientist and patient3. This commentary article synthesizes experiences of scientists and advocates with the progressive genetic disease cystic fibrosis (CF) who collaborated on a career development session for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s inaugural ResearchCon event in 2019. It explores how such collaborations affirm and transform individual perspectives on patient science and its importance in broader scientific research agenda setting. We first share our own individual insights about the experience and impact of the ResearchCon panel session before progressing to discussion and future directions centering the shared insights from one another’s reflections

    Gathering Knowledge in Your Library: Community Mentoring for Academic Librarians

    There are many mentoring definitions in the literature; however, the one that best describes the spirit of mentoring for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries (University Libraries) comes from the Dictionary of Business. It defines mentoring as “a form of training or employee development in which a trusted and respected person with a lot [of] experience—the mentor—offers special guidance, encouragement and support to a less experienced employee.”1 Mentoring at the University Libraries is designed to provide guidance and encouragement to incoming tenure-track librarians who must navigate the tenure process and organizational culture in higher education. The purpose of this case study is to describe the systematic effort to improve the mentoring program at the UNLV University Libraries. The Faculty Mentoring Committee mobilized the collective experience and knowledge of the library faculty by surveying them about their perceptions and attitudes about mentoring at the University Libraries. The thirty-item survey is appended; the survey results formed the basis of a mentoring action plan

    Medical Library Association Diversity and Inclusion Task Force Report

    © 2021, Medical Library Association. All rights reserved. The Medical Library Association (MLA) appointed a Diversity and Inclusion Task Force (DITF) in 2017. Sandra G. Franklin, AHIP, FMLA, chaired the task force and guided initiatives. From 2017 to 2020, the task force completed a review of MLA defining documents—including the mission, vision, values, and code of ethics— resulting in language updates to these documents. As MLA transitioned through the communities process, the DITF contributed to the transition. Other recommended essential changes to MLA profiles to promote awareness included updating pronouns to promote gender inclusivity and suggestions for the Annual Meeting Innovation Task Force. DITF members actively brought diversity and inclusion programming and engagement to MLA members at annual meetings. The task force held a fish bowl conversation, an open forum, and a Diversity Dialogues roundtable discussion; provided interactive discussion boards; and designed an MLA diversity button. Beyond MLA annual meetings, the task force hosted two critical librarianship meetings and a Twitter chat to engage MLA members with diversity and inclusion topics. Task force members promoted diversity and inclusion beyond their task force appointments with presentations at chapter meetings and other non-DITF MLA annual meeting programming. A notable task force accomplishment included completing a survey of MLA members to gather baseline demographic characteristics, including never before collected data about disability, socioeconomics, and caregiver status.     Transgender and non-binary people's experiences with alcohol reduction in the UK: A cross-sectional study

    Introduction: Transgender (trans) and non-binary people experience disproportionate harm from alcohol use, have a greater likelihood of developing dependence, and experience exclusion from both clinical and peer-based support systems. This study aimed to understand experiences with and preferences for alcohol reduction support among UK-based transgender and non-binary people. Methods: The study team and community stakeholders co-produced a cross-sectional survey and administered it to a purposive sample of trans and non-binary people from 1st February to 31st March 2022. The study recruited participants through social media, mailing lists, blog posts, and news articles. Participants (n = 565) had a lifetime history of alcohol use, were in one of five gender categories, and were classified as people who drink or formerly drank alcohol. Open- and closed-ended questions measured motivations for alcohol reduction and views surrounding various support modalities. Results: More than 15 % of the sample no longer drink alcohol and reported long-term abstinence, achieved without support, and were motivated by a loss of control over drinking behaviour and a desire to improve both physical and mental health. Mental illness, gender dysphoria, and a culture of alcohol excess were common antecedents of alcohol use. Thirty percent of participants who drink alcohol wanted to reduce their consumption. They suggested that this could be achieved with self-help tools, specialist trans and non-binary or LGBT+ services, access to both gender-affirming medical services, and sober queer social spaces. Conclusions: UK-based trans and non-binary people face unique gender minority-related stressors which contribute to patterns of alcohol use that are perceived to be out of control and harmful to health. While many wanted access to self-help tools, there was interest in the availability of specialist alcohol reduction services and more inclusive general services. Conducting needs assessments to inform Needs assessments should inform the development of such services and trans-affirmative training should be mandated for all who provide support with alcohol reduction

    The Dark Energy Survey : more than dark energy – an overview

    This overview paper describes the legacy prospect and discovery potential of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) beyond cosmological studies, illustrating it with examples from the DES early data. DES is using a wide-field camera (DECam) on the 4 m Blanco Telescope in Chile to image 5000 sq deg of the sky in five filters (grizY). By its completion, the survey is expected to have generated a catalogue of 300 million galaxies with photometric redshifts and 100 million stars. In addition, a time-domain survey search over 27 sq deg is expected to yield a sample of thousands of Type Ia supernovae and other transients. The main goals of DES are to characterize dark energy and dark matter, and to test alternative models of gravity; these goals will be pursued by studying large-scale structure, cluster counts, weak gravitational lensing and Type Ia supernovae. However, DES also provides a rich data set which allows us to study many other aspects of astrophysics. In this paper, we focus on additional science with DES, emphasizing areas where the survey makes a difference with respect to other current surveys. The paper illustrates, using early data (from ‘Science Verification’, and from the first, second and third seasons of observations), what DES can tell us about the Solar system, the Milky Way, galaxy evolution, quasars and other topics. In addition, we show that if the cosmological model is assumed to be +cold dark matter, then important astrophysics can be deduced from the primary DES probes. Highlights from DES early data include the discovery of 34 trans-Neptunian objects, 17 dwarf satellites of the Milky Way, one published z > 6 quasar (and more confirmed) and two published superluminous supernovae (and more confirmed)

    The Eleventh and Twelfth Data Releases of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: Final Data from SDSS-III

    The third generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-III) took data from 2008 to 2014 using the original SDSS wide-field imager, the original and an upgraded multi-object fiber-fed optical spectrograph, a new near-infrared high-resolution spectrograph, and a novel optical interferometer. All of the data from SDSS-III are now made public. In particular, this paper describes Data Release 11 (DR11) including all data acquired through 2013 July, and Data Release 12 (DR12) adding data acquired through 2014 July (including all data included in previous data releases), marking the end of SDSS-III observing. Relative to our previous public release (DR10), DR12 adds one million new spectra of galaxies and quasars from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) over an additional 3000 deg2 of sky, more than triples the number of H-band spectra of stars as part of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), and includes repeated accurate radial velocity measurements of 5500 stars from the Multi-object APO Radial Velocity Exoplanet Large-area Survey (MARVELS). The APOGEE outputs now include the measured abundances of 15 different elements for each star. In total, SDSS-III added 5200 deg2 of ugriz imaging; 155,520 spectra of 138,099 stars as part of the Sloan Exploration of Galactic Understanding and Evolution 2 (SEGUE-2) survey; 2,497,484 BOSS spectra of 1,372,737 galaxies, 294,512 quasars, and 247,216 stars over 9376 deg2; 618,080 APOGEE spectra of 156,593 stars; and 197,040 MARVELS spectra of 5513 stars.     Candidate Massive Galaxies at z~4 in the Dark Energy Survey

    Using stellar population models, we predicted that the Dark Energy Survey (DES) - due to its special combination of area (5000 deg. sq.) and depth (i=24.3i = 24.3) - would be in the position to detect massive (≳1011\gtrsim 10^{11} M⊙_{\odot}) galaxies at z∌4z \sim 4. We confront those theoretical calculations with the first ∌150\sim 150 deg. sq. of DES data reaching nominal depth. From a catalogue containing ∌5\sim 5 million sources, ∌26000\sim26000 were found to have observed-frame g−rg-r vs r−ir-i colours within the locus predicted for z∌4z \sim 4 massive galaxies. We further removed contamination by stars and artefacts, obtaining 606 galaxies lining up by the model selection box. We obtained their photometric redshifts and physical properties by fitting model templates spanning a wide range of star formation histories, reddening and redshift. Key to constrain the models is the addition, to the optical DES bands gg, rr, ii, zz, and YY, of near-IR JJ, HH, KsK_{s} data from the Vista Hemisphere Survey. We further applied several quality cuts to the fitting results, including goodness of fit and a unimodal redshift probability distribution. We finally select 233 candidates whose photometric redshift probability distribution function peaks around z∌4z\sim4, have high stellar masses (log⁥(\log(M∗^{*}/M⊙)∌11.7_{\odot})\sim 11.7 for a Salpeter IMF) and ages around 0.1 Gyr, i.e. formation redshift around 5. These properties match those of the progenitors of the most massive galaxies in the local universe. This is an ideal sample for spectroscopic follow-up to select the fraction of galaxies which is truly at high redshift. These initial results and those at the survey completion, which we shall push to higher redshifts, will set unprecedented constraints on galaxy formation, evolution, and the re-ionisation epoch
