    Chapter 1. Telemetry methods are able to acquire knowledge of fish movements which are used for a variety of management decisions. Implanting tags for telemetry requires minor surgery and anesthesia. Anesthesia for tag implantation is typically achieved with chemicals. However, chemicals are inherently variable and have restrictions on their use. This has led to the use of alternative methods for achieving anesthesia such as low voltage electroanesthesia (LVEA). LVEA subjects fish to a continuous non-pulsed direct current to achieve anesthesia appropriate for tag implantation. Unlike chemicals fish are quickly anesthetized and recover from anesthesia instantaneously. My objectives were to subject several species of fish to LVEA and determine if it can bring these species to anesthesia appropriate for tag implantation and if the voltage gradient (volts applied/ distance between electrodes) varies by fish based on size, scale type, species and conductivity of the water. LVEA successfully anesthetized 280 individuals which comprised of 11 species. Ctenoid scaled fish required a significantly higher voltage gradient than cycloid scale fish (Kruskal Wallis chi square = 118, p\u3c0.001). Water conductivity was greater where ctenoid scaled fish where collected than cycloid scaled fish (p\u3c0.0001). Multiple regression indicated that an interaction of fish length, scale type, water conductivity, and species explained 62% of variation in voltage gradient to anesthetize fish. I suggest agencies that use LVEA record information while using this method and make the information freely available to help form a standard procedure Chapter 2. An array of acoustic receivers is in place on Lake Roosevelt and Rufus Woods Reservoirs to study the movements of important fish species. The receivers in this array cannot determine how far away an acoustically tagged fish is from the receiver when an acoustic signal is detected on a receiver. Therefore, it is important to test the range at which these receivers can detect tags to understand where detections are likely coming from and to potentially improve the array by suggesting where to put additional receivers. I evaluated the receiver array with three methods: 1) stationary range testing which was done with a known delay tag at known distances from the receiver in 4 cardinal directions and at three depths at each location, 2) with telemetry data from tagged Redband Trout, and 3) float range testing conducted in the swift water downstream of Grand Coulee Dam. In total 43 receivers were stationary range tested. Generalized linear model indicated that detection frequency declined to 75% 100 m from receivers, 50% 300 m from receive and 25% 500 m from receiver.     First Records of the Fish Assemblage on Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, Spokane County, Washington, 2013

    We present the first documentation of the fish assemblage on Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge (TNWR) in Spokane County, Washington. Using various methods, we collected fishes inhabiting the wetlands of TNWR in 2013. A total of 15,921 fish was collected, and included, recorded by relative abundance (RA); brook stickleback (RA = 81%), pumpkinseed (RA = 18%), speckled dace (RA = <1%), redside shiner (RA = <1%), and brown bullhead (RA = <1%).     Comparing impingement boiling vs. pool boiling to improve technological insight into liquid cooling in electronics [abstract]

    Abstract only availableWith the field of technology advancing at a rapid pace so must the technology behind cooling these electronic parts. My research compares two completely different of cooling operations and compares many different fluids in each method. This research will help lead the electronics industry into the future of liquid cooling. The first method is impingement boiling where jets of fluid spray a heated copper coupon and as the fluid rapidly boils it removes large amounts of heat. Jet arrays will be tested for one jet, four jets, and nine jets. Also we will experiment with different sorts of surface finishes on the heated copper coupon to see how this affects heat transfer. The three fluids that will be tested in this experiment are Water, Ethanol, and HFE7000. With these fluid's contrasting properties we should obtain great insight into what properties are most desired for this form of cooling. The second method of removing heat will be by pool boiling. For these tests will have a similar copper coupon, but in this case the fluid is allowed to gather in a pool completely submersing the copper coupon. We will be testing the fluids listed above plus some additional nanofluids. This is a very simple form of boiling that yields great amounts of heat transfer. Pool boiling as well as impingement boiling both have a very positive outlook for the future of liquid cooling and I hope to offer more insight though my research

    Barriers to Becoming CASE Certified as Seen by Agriculture Educators

    There is a need to improve science comprehension in the United States. Incorporating scientific principles into the study of food production provides context to engage youth in STEM education. The Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) is an inquiry-based program that stimulates scientific engagement. While agriscience teachers believe in the concept, less than 20% are certified in Nebraska to teach CASE. Twenty-five active agriscience teachers, who were not CASE certified, individually discussed their reluctance to become CASE certified. Most research participants had a positive view of CASE but were concerned about the apparent stringent program structure. They questioned individualizing the CASE model for different teaching styles and programs. Three primary barriers to CASE certification were identified: cost, time, and administrative support. Although scholarships were available to cover certification costs (2,500−2,500-3,000) in Nebraska, participants questioned funding needed equipment and supplies to implement the program. Traditional CASE certifications require 50-100 hours of intense training, and participants opposed trainings that exceeded five days due to personal and professional obligations. Teachers also believe school administrators lack knowledge of CASE benefits. For the widespread implementation of CASE, certification trainings need to be more concise, implementation costs minimized, and school administrators informed of benefits

    Satellite Observation Highlights of the 2010 Russian Wildfires

    From late-July through mid-August 2010, wildfires raged in western Russia. The resulting thick smoke and biomass burning products were transported over the highly populated Moscow city and surrounding regions, seriously impairing visibility and affecting human health. We demonstrate the uniqueness of the 2010 Russian wildfires by using satellite observations from NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) platforms. Over Moscow and the region of major fire activity to the southeast, we calculate unprecedented increases in the MODIS fire count record of 178 %, an order of magnitude increase in the MODIS fire radiative power (308%) and OMI absorbing aerosols (255%), and a 58% increase in AIRS total carbon monoxide (CO). The exceptionally high levels of CO are shown to be of comparable strength to the 2006 El Nino wildfires over Indonesia. Both events record CO values exceeding 30x10(exp 7) molec/ square cm

    Non-dissipative tidal synchronization in accreting binary white dwarf systems

    We study a non-dissipative hydrodynamical mechanism that can stabilize the spin of the accretor in an ultra-compact double white dwarf binary. This novel synchronization mechanism relies on a nonlinear wave interaction spinning down the background star. The essential physics of the synchronization mechanism is summarized as follows. As the compact binary coalesces due to gravitational wave emission, the largest star eventually fills its Roche lobe and accretion starts. The accretor then spins up due to infalling material and eventually reaches a spin frequency where a normal mode of the star is resonantly driven by the gravitational tidal field of the companion. If the resonating mode satisfies a set of specific criteria, which we elucidate in this paper, it exchanges angular momentum with the background star at a rate such that the spin of the accretor locks at this resonant frequency, even though accretion is ongoing. Some of the accreted angular momentum that would otherwise spin up the accretor is fed back into the orbit through this resonant tidal interaction. Two modes capable of stabilizing the accretor's spin are the l=4,m=2 and l=5,m=3 CFS unstable hybrid r-modes, which stabilize the spin of the accretor at frequency 2.6 and 1.5 times the binary's orbital frequency respectively. Since the stabilization mechanism relies on continuously driving a mode at resonance, its lifetime is limited since eventually the mode amplitude saturates due to non-linear mode-mode coupling.     Weight loss is associated with improvements in cognitive function among overweight and obese people: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Whilst obesity is associated with a higher risk of cognitive impairment, the influence of weight loss on cognitive function in obese/overweight people is equivocal. We conducted a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and longitudinal studies evaluating the influence of voluntary weight loss on cognitive function in obese/overweight individuals. Articles were acquired from a systematic search of major databases from inception till 01/2016. A random effect meta-analysis of weight loss interventions (diet, physical activity, bariatric surgery) on different cognitive domains (memory, attention, executive functions, language and motor speed) was conducted. Twenty studies (13 longitudinal studies = 551 participants; 7 RCTs = 328 treated vs. 140 controls) were included. Weight loss was associated with a significant improvement in attention and memory in both longitudinal studies and RCTs, whereas executive function and language improved in longitudinal and RCT studies, respectively. In conclusion, intentional weight loss in obese/overweight people is associated with improvements in performance across various cognitive domains. Future adequately powered RCTs are required to confirm/refute these findings

    Ozonesonde Quality Assurance: JOSIE-SHADOZ (2017) and SHALLOTS (2018)

    Ozonesonde data constitute a mainstay of satellite calibration and are used for climatologies and analysis of trends, especially in the lower stratosphere where satellites are most uncertain. The electrochemical-concentration cell (ECC) ozonesonde has been deployed at ~100 stations worldwide since the 1960s, with changes over time in manufacture and procedures, including details of the cell chemical solution and data processing. As a consequence, there are biases among different stations and discontinuities in profile timeseries from individual site records. Since 1996 the Jlich [Germany] Ozone Sonde Intercomparison Experiment (JOSIE) has periodically tested ozonesondes in a simulation chamber designated the World Calibration Centre for Ozonesondes by WMO. In October- November 2017 a JOSIE campaign evaluated the sondes and procedures used in SHADOZ (Southern Hemisphere Additional Ozonesondes), a 14-station tropical and subtropical network. A distinctive feature of the 2017 JOSIE was that the tests were conducted by operators from eight SHADOZ stations; Nairobi, Natal, Irene, Costa Rica, Paramaribo, Reunion, Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur. Experimental protocols and preliminary results for the SHADOZ sonde configurations, which represent most of those in use today, are described. SHADOZ stations that follow WMO-recommended protocols record total ozone within 3% of the JOSIE reference instrument. Instrument biases noted in prior JOSIE and field tests like BESOS (2004) were noted in JOSIE-2017, with maximum effect in the stratosphere. In June 2018 we organized a series of dual launches during the OWLETS II campaign in the Maryland and Chesapeake Bay area (SHALLOTS = SHADOZ-OWLETS ParaLLel Ozonesonde Test Study). Instrument and solution types were varied as in JOSIE-2017 and three radiosonde-ozonesonde variants were tested. An example of a parallel sampling in SHALLOTS, from a Greenbelt EnSCI-iMet sonde combination flown with the Wallops SPCLMS package, is illustrated in the Figure. The result was a range of biases but in general the instrument combination (EnSCI-iMet) deployed at 11 SHADOZ stations recorded ~5-10% less ozone in the stratosphere than the SPC ECC sonde flown with a Vaisala or LMS system. These 2017 and 2018 results and prior JOSIEs demonstrate that regular testing is essential to maintain best practices in ozonesonde operations and to ensure high-quality data for the ozone assessment communities

    Total blood lymphocyte counts in hemochromatosis probands with HFE C282Y homozygosity: relationship to severity of iron overload and HLA-A and -B alleles and haplotypes

    BACKGROUND: It has been reported that some persons with hemochromatosis have low total blood lymphocyte counts, but the reason for this is unknown. METHODS: We measured total blood lymphocyte counts using an automated blood cell counter in 146 hemochromatosis probands (88 men, 58 women) with HFE C282Y homozygosity who were diagnosed in medical care. Univariate and multivariate analyses of total blood lymphocyte counts were evaluated using these variables: sex; age, transferrin saturation, and serum ferritin concentration at diagnosis; units of blood removed by phlebotomy to achieve iron depletion; and human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A and -B alleles and haplotypes. RESULTS: The mean age at diagnosis was 49 ± 14 years (range 18 – 80 years) in men and 50 ± 13 years (range 22 – 88 years) in women. The correlations of total blood lymphocyte counts with sex, age, transferrin saturation, and serum ferritin concentration at diagnosis, and units of blood removed by phlebotomy to achieve iron depletion were not significant at the 0.05 level. Univariate analyses revealed significant associations between total blood lymphocyte counts and presence of the HLA-A*01, -B*08, and -B*14 alleles, and the A*01-B*08 haplotype. Presence of the A*01 allele, B*08 allele, or A*01-B*08 haplotype were associated with a lower total blood lymphocyte count, whereas presence of the B*14 allele was associated with a greater total blood lymphocyte count. There was an inverse association of total blood lymphocyte count with units of phlebotomy to achieve iron depletion, serum ferritin concentration, and with presence of the A*01-B*08 haplotype. CONCLUSION: We conclude that there is a significant inverse relationship of total blood lymphocyte counts and severity of iron overload in hemochromatosis probands with HFE C282Y homozygosity. The presence of the HLA-A*01 allele or the -B*08 allele was also associated with significantly lower total blood lymphocyte counts, whereas presence of the -B*14 allele was associated with significantly higher total blood lymphocyte counts. In univariate and multivariate analyses, total blood lymphocyte counts were significantly lower in probands with the HLA-A*01-B*08 haplotype than in probands without this haplotype
