    Determinação experimental de coeficientes de difusão do uranio no combustivel nuclear UO2 por expectrometria de massa de ions secundarios

Neste trabalho é descrita uma nova metodologia para a medida direta da autodifusão do urânio no 'UO IND. 2¿ através da utilização do isótopo 'U ANTPOT. 235¿ como traçador, e a determinação dos perfis de difusão por espectrometria de massa de íons secundários (SIMS). Os estudos foram conduzidos em monocristais e policristais de 'UO IND. 2¿. As experiências de difusão em monocristais foram realizadas em uma atmosfera redutora de 'H IND. 2¿, entre 1498 e '1697 GRAUS¿C. Os coeficientes de difusão do urânio no 'UO IND. 2¿, em volume, podem ser descritos pela seguinte relação de Arrhenius: D('cm POT. 2¿/s) = 8,54x¿10 POT. ¿7¿exp[-4,4(eV)/kT]. Esse resultado é muito menor do que aqueles previamente determinados para outros autores. Isto pode ser atribuído a numerosos fatores, tais como estequiometria, qualidade da amostra e técnica utilizada na determinação do coeficiente de difusão. Os estudos com policristais foram realizados nas mesmas condições experimentais dos monocristais. Nestas condições, a difusividade do urânio que prevalece na pastilha de 'UO IND. 2¿ policristalina corresponde à difusão intergranular do tipo B...     Synthesis and characterization of mullite using silica from rice husk

    Mulita com composição 1,4 Al2O3.SiO2 foi sintetizada a partir de α-alumina comercial (Alfa Cesar Company) e de sílica obtida da calcinação da casca de arroz. Essa sílica possui alta área superficial, alta pureza e pequeno diâmetro médio de partícula. Pós de sílica e de alumina foram misturados na proporção estequiométrica 3Al2O3-2SiO2 correspondente a 71,8 % em peso de Al2O3 e 26,2 % em peso de SiO2, homogeneizados em moinho de disco orbital de alumina antes e após a calcinação a 1100ºC, durante 4 h, ao ar. Em seguida, os pós foram prensados uniaxialmente sob uma pressão de 1200 MPa. Os corpos verdes foram sinterizados a 1650ºC, por 4 h, ao ar. As densidades dos corpos sinterizados foram determinadas pelo método hidrostático. As caracterizações química e estrutural foram realizadas por ICP, DRX e MAS RMN de 29Si, respectivamente, e a análise microestrutural por MEV. Os resultados obtidos mostram que é possível sintetizar cerâmica mulita de alta pureza, com pouca fase vítrea, a partir da α-alumina e sílica, obtida da casca de arroz purificada e calcinada.Mullite, composed of 1,4Al2O3.SiO2 was synthesized using commercial α-alumina (Alpha Cesar Company) and silica obtained from the calcinations of rice husk. This silica exhibits a high specific surface area, high purity and small average particle diameter. Silica (26.2 wt.%) and α-alumina powders (71.8 wt. %) were mixed and homogenized using an alumina orbital disc mill before and after the calcinations at 1100ºC for 4 h in an air atmosphere. Then, the powders were pressed uniaxially at a pressure of 1200 MPa. The green compacts were sintered at 1650ºC, for 4 h, in air. The density of compacted sintering samples was determined using the hydrostatic method. The chemical and structural properties were observed using ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma), XRD (X-ray diffraction) and 29Si MAS (Magic Angle Spinning) NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) and the microstructural characterization performed using SEM (Scanning Electron Micrography). The results show that it is possible to synthesize mullite ceramic of high-purity and with little glassy phase from the α-alumina and silica obtained from the rice husk that is purified and calcinated

    Microhardness Profile and Residual Stresses Evaluation in a Shot Peened SAE 5160H Steel

    Shot peening (SP) is a surface cold hardening process used on metals to enhance life under cyclic stress. In this case, SP was applied to SAE5160H samples of steel quenched tempered in oil at 460 °C used for leaf springs. This study shows the residual surface stresses measured through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the microhardness variation through the perpendicular-to-the-peened surface using a combination of metallographic preparation and Vickers microhardness (HVN). This combination of techniques makes possible measuring the SP effect in perpendicular-to-the-treated surface. A residual stress of -365.8 ± 78 MPa measured by XRD and a maximum microhardness of 525± at 92.7 HVN on the surface were obtained for the SP material. Alternatively, an average of 54.2 ± 54.3 MPa residual stress measured by XRD and 433 ± 39.5 HVN were obtained for the As-it-is samples. In addition, corrosion electrochemical potential tests showed that SP increases the corrosion potential, which makes this process undesirable if the SP component is exposed to aggressive environments. Moreover, the As-it-is samples presented not statistically significant HVN difference in the measured points. The combination of experimental techniques allows estimating hardness change in perpendicular-to-the treated surface separated by as little as 10 µm but with a simpler specimen preparation than other techniques such as XRD or strain gauges.     Protocolo de recuperación mejorada después de cirugía (ERAS) atenúa el estrés y acelera la recuperación en pacientes después de resección radical por cáncer colorrectal: experiencia en la Clínica Universitaria Colombia

    Introducción. El conjunto de estrategias de recuperación mejorada después de la cirugía (ERAS, por sus siglas en inglés) constituye un enfoque de atención multimodal y multidisciplinario, cuyo propósito es reducir el estrés perioperatorio de la cirugía, disminuir la morbilidad y acortar la estancia hospitalaria. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo describir los resultados clínicos de pacientes sometidos a cirugía por cáncer colorrectal, identificando las complicaciones principales y los factores perioperatorios relacionados con el alta temprana. Métodos. Se analizaron los pacientes consecutivos sometidos a cirugía colorrectal entre los años 2020 y 2023, todos los cuales siguieron el protocolo ERAS institucional. Se evaluaron las características clínicas, los factores perioperatorios, los desenlaces postoperatorios y la tasa global de adherencia al protocolo. Resultados. Un total de 456 pacientes fueron sometidos a cirugía colorrectal, 51% de sexo masculino, con edad media de 60 años. La mayoría de las intervenciones se realizaron por laparoscopia (78 %), con una tasa de conversión del 14,5 %. Las complicaciones postoperatorias incluyeron fuga anastomótica (4,6 %), sangrado, infección intraabdominal y obstrucción intestinal. La estancia hospitalaria promedio fue de 4 días y la mortalidad del 2,8 %. La tasa global de adherencia al protocolo ERAS fue del 84,7 %. Conclusiones. El enfoque combinado de cirugía laparoscópica y protocolo ERAS es factible, seguro y se asocia con una estancia hospitalaria más corta. La implementación y adherencia al protocolo ERAS no solo mejora los resultados postoperatorios, sino que también resalta la importancia de acceder a datos sólidos, permitiendo mejorar la atención perioperatoria local

    Sensitivity of South American tropical forests to an extreme climate anomaly

    The tropical forest carbon sink is known to be drought sensitive, but it is unclear which forests are the most vulnerable to extreme events. Forests with hotter and drier baseline conditions may be protected by prior adaptation, or more vulnerable because they operate closer to physiological limits. Here we report that forests in drier South American climates experienced the greatest impacts of the 2015–2016 El Niño, indicating greater vulnerability to extreme temperatures and drought. The long-term, ground-measured tree-by-tree responses of 123 forest plots across tropical South America show that the biomass carbon sink ceased during the event with carbon balance becoming indistinguishable from zero (−0.02 ± 0.37 Mg C ha −1 per year). However, intact tropical South American forests overall were no more sensitive to the extreme 2015–2016 El Niño than to previous less intense events, remaining a key defence against climate change as long as they are protected

    Taking the pulse of Earth's tropical forests using networks of highly distributed plots

    Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. This long-term pan-tropical collaboration has revealed a large long-term carbon sink and its trends, as well as making clear which drivers are most important, which forest processes are affected, where they are changing, what the lags are, and the likely future responses of tropical forests as the climate continues to change. By leveraging a remarkably old technology, plot networks are sparking a very modern revolution in tropical forest science.
