    This is a research analysis concerning the necessity of educating immigrant children in the United States. This has become an important issue in our United States. Immigrant children through the recent years and present time, make up a significant portion of the school population. The majority of these are immigrants from Mexico. These “Latino” students have a great impact in today\u27s public school systems. Major court cases and legislation such as Plyer vs. Doe, Lau vs. Nichols, and Proposition 203 have brought attention to the rights and education of immigrant children. There are many different programs in place to teach English to immigrant children, mainly “Latinos.” ESL, bilingual education, and immersion schools are just a few of these programs offered here in the United States. The psychological impact on the immigrant children experiencing the adaptation to a new country and language can be very traumatic. The increasing “Latino” school population has opened a controversial issue concerning illegal immigration. Many argue that children of illegal immigrants do not have the right to an education in the American school system

    MANAGEMENT AND CONSERVATION OF WESTSLOPE CUTTHROAT TROUT IN AN IMPACTED, CONNECTED RIVER SYSTEM

    Westslope cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi (WCT) is a native species of high conservation value that historically exhibited partially migratory behavior throughout its range. Long-term persistence of WCT is threatened by human habitat modification, fragmentation, introduction of non-native species, and hybridization. As a result of these changes, remnant populations in Montana have shifted toward resident populations in headwater systems and away from migratory populations in larger connected river networks. This is compounded by the historic introduction of rainbow trout O. mykiss (RBT) that hybridize with WCT, especially in larger river habitats. Rock Creek in western Montana, USA was historically managed as a world class RBT fishery. Despite intensive pressure from non-native species, non-hybridized migratory WCT still exist within Rock Creek. Understanding the drivers and mechanisms that have maintained this non-hybridized population of partially migratory WCT is of high importance to managers trying to manage populations in the face of multiple threats to their persistence. First, we investigated the migratory life history of WCT in Rock Creek, including the diversity of behaviors within the population, potential drivers promoting it, and threats to this population. Second, we investigated dynamics of hybridization between RBT and WCT; specifically, what factors are shaping the pattern of hybridization across the landscape and what mechanisms are providing resistance to hybridization? Our results revealed more than a 20-fold variation in spawning migrations distances among individuals, with migratory fish returning to thirteen different tributaries. Migratory behavior was associated with larger spawning tributaries with higher adult biomass. Longer migrating individuals spawned lower in tributaries where there was greater overlap with RBTxWCT hybrids. Survival was low and not related to spawning or migration distance but was strongly related to summer habitat. Propagule pressure was the main mechanism driving the pattern of hybridization. Sites that were resistant to hybridization were further from the highest source of RBT, had more spatial and temporal assortative mating, and larger resident individuals. When propagule pressure is high it likely overwhelms localized resistance. Management and conservation of WCT, and similar partially migratory species, in these connected stream networks requires a basin scale approach that prioritizes connectivity among habitats, promotes natural flow regimes, and works to reduce abundances of non-native species

    The purposes of the study were the following: (1) to identify the tasks and experiences required or expected of child development majors during their period of student teaching in a university or college laboratory nursery school; (2) to identify additional tasks and experiences required or expected by supervising teachers in the training provided student teachers; (3) to determine additional tasks and experiences that each supervising teacher believes should be included in the student teaching requirements; (4) to describe and compare the various laboratory nursery school programs offering preschool student teacher preparation in universities and colleges. The subjects surveyed in the study were 100 supervising teachers in 60 universities and colleges in the United States. The survey instruments consisted of a questionnaire, which described the laboratory programs and teachers, and a checklist of tasks performed by student teachers in the programs. The reliability and validity of the checklist were not measured statistically. The data were analyzed descriptively in tabular form using percentages

    Development of an Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Intensity Score Tool

    Purpose Emergency medicine pharmacists (EMPs) have been demonstrated to have a positive impact on patient outcomes in a variety of clinical scenarios in the emergency department (ED), yet their distribution across the nation is suboptimal. An emergency medicine pharmacy intensity score tool (EMPIST) would not only facilitate the quantification of EMP staffing needs and ideal resource deployment times, but would also allow practitioners to triage patient care activities. The purpose of this investigation was to develop an EMPIST and evaluate its relationship to EMP activities. Methods This was a multicenter, prospective, observational analysis of an EMPIST developed by practicing EMPs. EMPs prospectively documented their clinical activities during usual care for patients in their ED. Spearman’s rank-order correlation was used to determine any correlation between the EMPIST and pharmacist activities. Results In total, 970 EMP activities and 584 EMPIST items were documented in 352 patients by 7 EMPs across 7 different EDs. The most commonly documented EMP interventions performed were bedside monitoring (12.7%), initiation of nonantimicrobial therapy (12.6%), and antimicrobial therapy initiation and streamlining (10.6%). The total EMPIST was found to significantly correlate with EMP activities, and this correlation was consistent across both “diagnostic/presentation” and “medication” items (P \u3c 0.001 for all comparisons). Conclusion The EMPIST significantly correlated with EMP activities, with consistent correlation across all subgroups. Its utilization has the potential to enhance bedside clinical practice and optimize the deployment of limited EMP services. Additional investigations are needed to examine the validity of this tool and identify any relationship it may have to patient outcomes

    Overexpression of Mcl-1 exacerbates lymphocyte accumulation and autoimmune kidney disease in lpr mice

    Cell death by apoptosis has a critical role during embryonic development and in maintaining tissue homeostasis. In mammals, there are two converging apoptosis pathways: the ‘extrinsic’ pathway, which is triggered by engagement of cell surface ‘death receptors’ such as Fas/APO-1; and the ‘intrinsic’ pathway, which is triggered by diverse cellular stresses, and is regulated by prosurvival and pro-apoptotic members of the Bcl-2 family of proteins. Pro-survival Mcl-1, which can block activation of the proapoptotic proteins, Bax and Bak, appears critical for the survival and maintenance of multiple haemopoietic cell types. To investigate the impact on haemopoiesis of simultaneously inhibiting both apoptosis pathways, we introduced the vavP-Mcl-1 transgene, which causes overexpression of Mcl-1 protein in all haemopoietic lineages, into Faslpr/lpr mice, which lack functional Fas and are prone to autoimmunity. The combined mutations had a modest impact on myelopoiesis, primarily an increase in the macrophage/monocyte population in Mcl-1tg/lpr mice compared with lpr or Mcl-1tg mice. The impact on lymphopoiesis was striking, with a marked elevation in all major lymphoid subsets, including the non-conventional double-negative (DN) T cells (TCRβ+ CD4– CD8– B220+ ) characteristic of Faslpr/lpr mice. Of note, the onset of autoimmunity was markedly accelerated in Mcl-1tg/lpr mice compared with lpr mice, and this was preceded by an increase in immunoglobulin (Ig)-producing cells and circulating autoantibodies. This degree of impact was surprising, given the relatively mild phenotype conferred by the vavP-Mcl-1 transgene by itself: a two- to threefold elevation of peripheral B and T cells, no significant increase in the non-conventional DN T-cell population and no autoimmune disease. Comparison of the phenotype with that of other susceptible mice suggests that the development of autoimmune disease in Mcl-1tg/lpr mice may be influenced not only by Ig-producing cells but also other haemopoietic cell types

    Relative adrenal insufficiency and hemodynamic status in cardiopulmonary bypass surgery patients. A prospective cohort study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The objectives of this study were to determine the risk factors for relative adrenal insufficiency in cardiopulmonary bypass patients and the impact on postoperative vasopressor requirements.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Prospective cohort study on cardiopulmonary bypass patients who received etomidate or not during anesthetic induction. Relative adrenal insufficiency was defined as a rise in serum cortisol ≤ 9 μg/dl after the administration of 250 μg of consyntropin. Plasma cortisol levels were measured preoperatively, immediately before, 30, 60, and 90 minutes after the administration of cosyntropin, and at 24 hours after surgery.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>120 elective cardiopulmonary bypass patients were included. Relative adrenal insufficiency (Δcortisol ≤9 μg/dl) incidence was 77.5%. 78 patients received etomidate and 69 (88%) of them developed relative adrenal insufficiency, (<it>P </it>< 0.001). Controlling for clinical characteristics with a propensity analysis, etomidate was the only independent risk factor associated with relative adrenal insufficiency (OR 6.55, CI 95%: 2.47-17.4; <it>P </it>< 0.001). Relative adrenal insufficiency patients showed more vasopressor requirements just after surgery (<it>P </it>= 0.04), and at 4 hours after surgery (<it>P </it>= 0.01). Pre and post-test plasma cortisol levels were inversely associated with maximum norepinephrine dose (ρ = -0.22, <it>P </it>= 0.02; ρ = -0.18, <it>P </it>= 0.05; ρ = -0.21, <it>P </it>= 0.02; and ρ = -0.22, <it>P </it>= 0.02, respectively).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Relative adrenal insufficiency in elective cardiopulmonary bypass patients may induce postoperative vasopressor dependency. Use of etomidate in these patients is a modifiable risk factor for the development of relative adrenal insufficiency that should be avoided.</p

    Peroxiredoxin II Regulates Effector and Secondary Memory CD8+ T cell Responses

    Reactive oxygen intermediates (ROI) generated in response to receptor stimulation play an important role in cellular responses. However, the effect of increased H2O2on an antigen-specific CD8+ T cell response was unknown. Following T cell receptor (TCR) stimulation, the expression and oxidation of peroxiredoxin II (PrdxII), a critical antioxidant enzyme, increased in CD8+ T cells. Deletion of PrdxII increased ROI, S phase entry, division, and death during in vitro division. During primary acute viral and bacterial infection, the number of effector CD8+ T cells in PrdxII-deficient mice was increased, while the number of memory cells were similar to those of the wild-type cells. Adoptive transfer of P14 TCR transgenic cells demonstrated that the increased expansion of effector cells was T cell autonomous. After rechallenge, effector CD8+ T cells in mutant animals were more skewed to memory phenotype than cells from wild-type mice, resulting in a larger secondary memory CD8+ T cell pool. During chronic viral infection, increased antigen-specific CD8+ T cells accumulated in the spleens of PrdxII mutant mice, causing mortality.
