    Economic growth and foreign policy of regional powers - a case study of Turkey in the Middle East

    The aim of this thesis is to explore the relationship between economic growth and the foreign policy of regional powers. It is a single case study of Turkey in the Middle East region. This thesis uses the regional level of analysis and explores different conceptualizations of regions in international relations. Mainly it focuses on the regional security complex theory formulated by Barry Buzan and Ole Waever. Hypothesis for the analysis is that economic growth experienced by regional powers enables them to spend more resources to increase their capability of power projection. Increased amount of resources together with the desire to strive for regional hegemony, pushes regional powers to adopt a more active and asserting foreign policy in their own region. The conducted analysis about Turkey reveals that economic growth correlates strongly to the amount of available resources Turkey has for conducting foreign policy. To analyze Turkish foreign political engagement and activity in the region, press releases from the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs were used. The analyze based on them indicated that during the years following a fast economic growth Turkish officials undertake more trips to countries in the Middle East and the number of mentioning of Middle East countries in press releases increase. That indicates that economic growth correlates positively with regional foreign political activity. Qualitative analysis of the press releases reveals that Turkey has adopted a more assertive and critical foreign policy towards Iraq, Syria and Egypt compared to 10 years ago.     Use of hydrogen peroxide and percarbonate to treat chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon-contaminated soil

    This study compared treatment methods that utilised a liquid carrier of hydrogen peroxide and a solid carrier, percarbonate, for p-dichlorobenzene, p-chloro-m-cresol and p-chlorothymol degradation in the soil. The targeted chlorinated aromatic contaminants in the soil degraded to a certain level when treated with the liquid hydrogen peroxide, but the removal efficacy was not dependent on the dosage. In contrast, an increase in the percarbonate dosage enhanced the contaminant removal. Supplementary ferrous iron was more effective for the treatment that employed the liquid carrier of hydrogen peroxide than the treatment employing the solid carrier. Although acidic pH conditions (initial pH of 2.5) favoured contaminant degradation using liquid hydrogen peroxide, the treatment involving percarbonate resulted in more effective contaminant removal without any soil pH preadjustment. Therefore, the solid carrier of hydrogen peroxide, percarbonate, was concluded to be an effective alternative to the liquid carrier, resulting in greater contaminant removal at natural soil pH values

    Surfactants-based remediation as an effective approach for removal of environmental pollutants—A review

    Deterioration of environmental quality and equilibrium by rampant industrial expansion, accelerated urbanization and unchecked population growth has become a high-priority concern. The release of an alarming number of toxic polluting agents such as volatile organic compounds, dyes, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, industrial wastes, and personal care products due to natural or anthropogenic activities pose direct adverse effects on human health and living entities. This issue is inescapably increased because of the lack of efficient technologies for the proper disposal, management, and recycling of waste. It is of paramount importance to track alternative solutions to address these pollution problems for an eco-sustainable environment. Conventional remediation techniques are either inefficient, cumbersome or restricted due to certain techno-economic limitations. Environmental compatibility and high pollutant-removal efficacy make surfactants valuable for removal of organic pollutants and toxic heavy metal ions from different mediums. In this review, we present recent and up-to-date information on micelles/surfactants-assisted abatement of a vast number of toxic agents of emerging concern from water/wastewater including volatile organic compounds, personal care products, pharmaceutically active residues, toxic metals, dye pollutants, pesticides, and petroleum hydrocarbons. Based on the literature survey, it can be concluded that micelles-assisted water and soil treatment technology can have a better future on large-scale decontamination of wastewater. Though bio-surfactants are environmentally friendlier matrices and have successfully been employed for environmental decontamination; their large-scale applicability is challenging owing to high costs.
