Os resultados demonstraram que, tanto o extrato etanólico bruto de P. latipes quanto os flavonóides 7-metoxilados testados, não induziram atividade mutagênica nas linhagens TA98 e TA100.Paepalanthus latipes (Silveira) is one of the native Brazilian plants from Serra do Cipó, Minas Gerais, known as sempre-vivas which is exported to the United States, Europe and Japan because of its ornamental value. Few results were reported in relation to the biological activity of these plants. In this work, the mutagenicity of the crude ethanolic extract of P. latipes and isolated 7-methoxyflavonoids (7-methylquercetagetin and 7-methylquercetagetin-4'-O-β-D-glucopyranoside) was evaluated by using the Ames test with Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA100 strains, at concentrations from 62.5 to 375 μg/plate, with and without metabolic activation (using microsomal S9 fraction). Results demonstrated that both the extract of P. latipes as well as the tested 7-methoxyflavonoids did not induce mutagenicity at the experimental tested conditions
notes on the present distribution and conservation of the sooty mangabey (Cercocebus atys) in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa
UIDB/04038/2020 UIDP/04038/2020The West-African sooty mangabey (Cercocebus atys) is threatened by habitat loss, hunting for meat consumption, and mortality during crop-foraging events. The species’ overall demographic trend is unknown. Presence and distribution in Guinea-Bissau, a country neighbored by Senegal and Republic of Guinea, was confirmed in 1946 but the species was declared extinct in 1989 and not observed in subsequent countrywide expeditions. Narratives of its presence across southern Guinea-Bissau are scattered in reports and occurrence in the eastern part was reported in 2017, but the limits of its distribution are currently unknown. Here, we present recent geo-referenced visual and molecular-based records of the sooty mangabey for three protected areas in southern Guinea-Bissau collected as part of a region-wide survey. Individuals were observed in Cufada Lagoons Natural Park (2015) and Dulombi National Park (NP) (2016) and photographed in Boé NP (2007, 2015 and 2020). Thirty-six samples collected in Boé NP (2017) were identified as sooty mangabey using a 402 base pair fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Our work suggests a wider distribution in Guinea-Bissau than previously described, augments knowledge of the populations’ current habitat use and threats, and has implications for efforts to conserve the species in West Africa. Considering the sooty mangabey as the reservoir of the simian immunodeficiency virus that led to the human variant, HIV-2, confirmation that the Guinea-Bissau population is not extinct may lead to a better understanding of early viral jump to humans and consequent epidemic spread, specifically of the HIV-2 Subgroup A. We highlight the need for extra conservation measures by Guinea-Bissau authorities.publishersversionpublishe
Participatory analysis for adaptation to climate change in Mediterranean agricultural systems: possible choices in process design (versão Pre Print)
There is an increasing call for local measures to adapt to climate change, based on foresight analyses in collaboration with actors. However, such analyses involve many challenges, particularly because the actors concerned may not consider climate change to be an urgent concern. This paper examines the methodological choices made by three research teams in the design and implementation of participatory foresight analyses to explore agricultural and water management options for adaptation to climate change. Case studies were conducted in coastal areas of France, Morocco, and Portugal where the groundwater is intensively used for irrigation, the aquifers are at risk or are currently overexploited, and a serious agricultural crisis is underway. When designing the participatory processes, the researchers had to address four main issues: whether to avoid or prepare dialogue between actors whose relations may be limited or tense; how to select participants and get them involved; how to facilitate discussion of issues that the actors may not initially consider to be of great concern; and finally, how to design and use scenarios. In each case, most of the invited actors responded and met to discuss and evaluate a series of scenarios. Strategies were discussed at different levels, from farming practices to aquifer management. It was shown that such participatory analyses can be implemented in situations which may initially appear to be unfavourable. This was made possible by the flexibility in the methodological choices, in particular the possibility of framing the climate change issue in a broader agenda for discussion with the actors
Gluon polarization in the nucleon from quasi-real photoproduction of high-pT hadron pairs
We present a determination of the gluon polarization Delta G/G in the
nucleon, based on the helicity asymmetry of quasi-real photoproduction events,
Q^2<1(GeV/c)^2, with a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final
state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV
polarized muon beam scattered on a polarized 6-LiD target. The helicity
asymmetry for the selected events is = 0.002 +- 0.019(stat.) +-
0.003(syst.). From this value, we obtain in a leading-order QCD analysis Delta
G/G=0.024 +- 0.089(stat.) +- 0.057(syst.) at x_g = 0.095 and mu^2 =~ 3
(GeV}/c)^2.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Measurement of the Spin Structure of the Deuteron in the DIS Region
We present a new measurement of the longitudinal spin asymmetry A_1^d and the
spin-dependent structure function g_1^d of the deuteron in the range 1 GeV^2 <
Q^2 < 100 GeV^2 and 0.004< x <0.7. The data were obtained by the COMPASS
experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV polarised muon beam and a large polarised
6-LiD target. The results are in agreement with those from previous experiments
and improve considerably the statistical accuracy in the region 0.004 < x <
0.03.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, subm. to PLB, revised: author list, Fig. 4,

Hadron Energy Reconstruction for the ATLAS Calorimetry in the Framework of the Non-parametrical Method
This paper discusses hadron energy reconstruction for the ATLAS barrel
prototype combined calorimeter (consisting of a lead-liquid argon
electromagnetic part and an iron-scintillator hadronic part) in the framework
of the non-parametrical method. The non-parametrical method utilizes only the
known ratios and the electron calibration constants and does not require
the determination of any parameters by a minimization technique. Thus, this
technique lends itself to an easy use in a first level trigger. The
reconstructed mean values of the hadron energies are within of the
true values and the fractional energy resolution is . The value of the ratio
obtained for the electromagnetic compartment of the combined calorimeter is
and agrees with the prediction that for this
electromagnetic calorimeter. Results of a study of the longitudinal hadronic
shower development are also presented. The data have been taken in the H8 beam
line of the CERN SPS using pions of energies from 10 to 300 GeV.Comment: 33 pages, 13 figures, Will be published in NIM
Genetic diversity in natural populations of Jacaranda decurrens Cham. determined using RAPD and AFLP markers
Jacaranda decurrens (Bignoniaceae) is an endemic species of the Cerrado with validated antitumoral activity. The genetic diversity of six populations of J. decurrens located in the State of São Paulo was determined in this study by using molecular markers for randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). Following optimization of the amplification reaction, 10 selected primers generated 78 reproducible RAPD fragments that were mostly (69.2%) polymorphic. Two hundred and five reproducible AFLP fragments were generated by using four selected primer combinations; 46.3% of these fragments were polymorphic, indicating a considerable level of genetic diversity. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) using these two groups of markers indicated that variability was strongly structured amongst populations. The unweighted pair group method with arithmatic mean (UPGMA) and Pearson's correlation coefficient (RAPD -0.16, p = 0.2082; AFLP 0.37, p = 0.1006) between genetic matrices and geographic distances suggested that the population structure followed an island model in which a single population of infinite size gave rise to the current populations of J. decurrens, independently of their spatial position. The results of this study indicate that RAPD and AFLP markers were similarly efficient in measuring the genetic variability amongst natural populations of J. decurrens. These data may be useful for developing strategies for the preservation of this medicinal species in the Cerrado
