    Predicting future reading problems based on pre-reading auditory measures: a longitudinal study of children with a familial risk of dyslexia

    Purpose: This longitudinal study examines measures of temporal auditory processing in pre-reading children with a family risk of dyslexia. Specifically, it attempts to ascertain whether pre-reading auditory processing, speech perception, and phonological awareness (PA) reliably predict later literacy achievement. Additionally, this study retrospectively examines the presence of pre-reading auditory processing, speech perception, and PA impairments in children later found to be literacy impaired. Method: Forty-four pre-reading children with and without a family risk of dyslexia were assessed at three time points (kindergarten, first, and second grade). Auditory processing measures of rise time (RT) discrimination and frequency modulation (FM) along with speech perception, PA, and various literacy tasks were assessed. Results: Kindergarten RT uniquely contributed to growth in literacy in grades one and two, even after controlling for letter knowledge and PA. Highly significant concurrent and predictive correlations were observed with kindergarten RT significantly predicting first grade PA. Retrospective analysis demonstrated atypical performance in RT and PA at all three time points in children who later developed literacy impairments. Conclusions: Although significant, kindergarten auditory processing contributions to later literacy growth lack the power to be considered as a single-cause predictor; thus results support temporal processing deficits’ contribution within a multiple deficit model of dyslexia

    Critical roles of endogenous glucocorticoids for disease tolerance in malaria

    During malaria, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is activated and glucocorticoid (GC) levels are increased, but their essential roles have been largely overlooked. GCs are decisive for systemic regulation of vital processes such as immune responses, vascular function, and metabolism, which are crucial in malaria. Here, we introduce GCs in general, followed by their versatile roles for disease tolerance in malaria. A complementary comparison is provided with their role in sepsis. Finally, potential translational implications are considered. The failed clinical trials of dexamethasone against cerebral malaria in the past have diminished the interest in GCs in malaria. However, the issue of relative corticosteroid insufficiency has barely been explored in malaria patients, but may hold promise for a better understanding and treatment of specific malaria complications

    Grapheme-phoneme learning in an unknown orthography: a study in typical reading and dyslexic children

    In this study, we examined the learning of new grapheme-phoneme correspondences in individuals with and without dyslexia. Additionally, we investigated the relation between grapheme-phoneme learning and measures of phonological awareness, orthographic knowledge and rapid automatized naming, with a focus on the unique joint variance of grapheme-phoneme learning to word and non-word reading achievement. Training of grapheme-phoneme associations consisted of a 20-min training program in which eight novel letters (Hebrew) needed to be paired with speech sounds taken from the participant's native language (Dutch). Eighty-four third grade students, of whom 20 were diagnosed with dyslexia, participated in the training and testing. Our results indicate a reduced ability of dyslexic readers in applying newly learned grapheme-phoneme correspondences while reading words which consist of these novel letters. However, we did not observe a significant independent contribution of grapheme-phoneme learning to reading outcomes. Alternatively, results from the regression analysis indicate that failure to read may be due to differences in phonological and/or orthographic knowledge but not to differences in the grapheme-phoneme-conversion process itself

    Processing of structural neuroimaging data in young children:bridging the gap between current practice and state-of-the-art methods

    The structure of the brain is subject to very rapid developmental changes during early childhood. Pediatric studies based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) over this age range have recently become more frequent, with the advantage of providing in vivo and non-invasive high-resolution images of the developing brain, toward understanding typical and atypical trajectories. However, it has also been demonstrated that application of currently standard MRI processing methods that have been developed with datasets from adults may not be appropriate for use with pediatric datasets. In this review, we examine the approaches currently used in MRI studies involving young children, including an overview of the rationale for new MRI processing methods that have been designed specifically for pediatric investigations. These methods are mainly related to the use of age-specific or 4D brain atlases, improved methods for quantifying and optimizing image quality, and provision for registration of developmental data obtained with longitudinal designs. The overall goal is to raise awareness of the existence of these methods and the possibilities for implementing them in developmental neuroimaging studies

    A Review on Treatment-Related Brain Changes in Aphasia

    Numerous studies have investigated brain changes associated with interventions targeting a range of language problems in patients with aphasia. We strive to integrate the results of these studies to examine (1) whether the focus of the intervention (i.e., phonology, semantics, orthography, syntax, or rhythmic-melodic) determines in which brain regions changes occur; and (2a) whether the most consistent changes occur within the language network or outside, and (2b) whether these are related to individual differences in language outcomes. The results of 32 studies with 204 unique patients were considered. Concerning (1), the location of treatment-related changes does not clearly depend on the type of language processing targeted. However, there is some support that rhythmic-melodic training has more impact on the right hemisphere than linguistic training. Concerning (2), we observed that language recovery is not only associated with changes in traditional language-related structures in the left hemisphere and homolog regions in the right hemisphere, but also with more medial and subcortical changes (e.g., precuneus and basal ganglia). Although it is difficult to draw strong conclusions, because there is a lack of systematic large-scale studies on this topic, this review highlights the need for an integrated approach to investigate how language interventions impact on the brain. Future studies need to focus on larger samples preserving subject-specific information (e.g., lesion effects) to cope with the inherent heterogeneity of stroke-induced aphasia. In addition, recovery-related changes in whole-brain connectivity patterns need more investigation to provide a comprehensive neural account of treatment-related brain plasticity and language recovery

    Detecting post-stroke aphasia using EEG-based neural envelope tracking of natural speech

    [Objective]. After a stroke, one-third of patients suffer from aphasia, a language disorder that impairs communication ability. The standard behavioral tests used to diagnose aphasia are time-consuming and have low ecological validity. Neural tracking of the speech envelope is a promising tool for investigating brain responses to natural speech. The speech envelope is crucial for speech understanding, encompassing cues for processing linguistic units. In this study, we aimed to test the potential of the neural envelope tracking technique for detecting language impairments in individuals with aphasia (IWA). [Approach]. We recorded EEG from 27 IWA in the chronic phase after stroke and 22 controls while they listened to a story. We quantified neural envelope tracking in a broadband frequency range as well as in the delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma frequency bands using mutual information analysis. Besides group differences in neural tracking measures, we also tested its suitability for detecting aphasia using a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. We further investigated the required recording length for the SVM to detect aphasia and to obtain reliable outcomes. [Results]. IWA displayed decreased neural envelope tracking compared to controls in the broad, delta, theta, and gamma band. Neural tracking in these frequency bands effectively captured aphasia at the individual level (SVM accuracy 84%, AUC 88%). High-accuracy and reliable detection could be obtained with 5-7 minutes of recording time. [Significance]. Our study shows that neural tracking of speech is an effective biomarker for aphasia. We demonstrated its potential as a diagnostic tool with high reliability, individual-level detection of aphasia, and time-efficient assessment. This work represents a significant step towards more automatic, objective, and ecologically valid assessments of language impairments in aphasia

    Detecting Post-Stroke Aphasia Via Brain Responses to Speech in a Deep Learning Framework

    Aphasia, a language disorder primarily caused by a stroke, is traditionally diagnosed using behavioral language tests. However, these tests are time-consuming, require manual interpretation by trained clinicians, suffer from low ecological validity, and diagnosis can be biased by comorbid motor and cognitive problems present in aphasia. In this study, we introduce an automated screening tool for speech processing impairments in aphasia that relies on time-locked brain responses to speech, known as neural tracking, within a deep learning framework. We modeled electroencephalography (EEG) responses to acoustic, segmentation, and linguistic speech representations of a story using convolutional neural networks trained on a large sample of healthy participants, serving as a model for intact neural tracking of speech. Subsequently, we evaluated our models on an independent sample comprising 26 individuals with aphasia (IWA) and 22 healthy controls. Our results reveal decreased tracking of all speech representations in IWA. Utilizing a support vector machine classifier with neural tracking measures as input, we demonstrate high accuracy in aphasia detection at the individual level (85.42\%) in a time-efficient manner (requiring 9 minutes of EEG data). Given its high robustness, time efficiency, and generalizability to unseen data, our approach holds significant promise for clinical applications.Comment: Shared first authors: De Clercq & Puffa

Remiantis teorinių šaltinių analize aptariamos tokios temos kaip darnios plėtros samprata, darnios plėtros dimensijos, darnios plėtros strategijų ir globalaus švietimo sąsajos.Sustainable development is an integral concept and a complex process, which aim is to ensure well-being and prosperity for nowadays and future generations. According to WCED, sustainable development is development that meets the needs of present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable development is permanently on political agenda, however, lacks attention of Lithuanian scientist. Moreover, if the concept is discussed, the emphasis is put on ecological or economic perspective, ignoring the social one. Therefore, the aim of the article is to highlight social capital in the context of sustainable development and to discuss the role of global education in the strengthening of social capital, e.g. ensuring implementation of sustainable development. Based on review of scientific resources, the article discusses ecological, economic and social capital, their complementarity and interdependence. These strategies for sustainable development: the efficiency, the sufficiency and the redistribution, are presented in the connection with global education issues

    Auditory-motor entrainment and phonological skills: precise auditory timing hypothesis (PATH)

    Phonological skills are enhanced by music training, but the mechanisms enabling this cross-domain enhancement remain unknown. To explain this cross-domain transfer, we propose a precise auditory timing hypothesis (PATH) whereby entrainment practice is the core mechanism underlying enhanced phonological abilities in musicians. Both rhythmic synchronization and language skills such as consonant discrimination, detection of word and phrase boundaries, and conversational turn-taking rely on the perception of extremely fine-grained timing details in sound. Auditory-motor timing is an acoustic feature which meets all five of the pre-conditions necessary for cross-domain enhancement to occur (Patel, 2011, 2012, 2014). There is overlap between the neural networks that process timing in the context of both music and language. Entrainment to music demands more precise timing sensitivity than does language processing. Moreover, auditory-motor timing integration captures the emotion of the trainee, is repeatedly practiced, and demands focused attention. The PATH predicts that musical training emphasizing entrainment will be particularly effective in enhancing phonological skills
