    A consistent analysis of (e,e'p) and (d,3He) experiments

    The apparent discrepancy between spectroscopic factors obtained in (e,e'p) and (d,3He) experiments is investigated. This is performed first for 48Ca(e,e'p) and 48Ca(d,3He) experiments and then for other nuclei. It is shown that the discrepancy disappears if the (d,3He) experiments are re-analyzed with a non-local finite range DWBA analysis with a bound-state wave function that is obtained from (e,e'p) experiments.Comment: 23 pages, 7 figure

    Incidence of cancer in the area around Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in 1988–2003: a population-based ecological study

    BACKGROUND: Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is a major source of complaints about aircraft noise, safety risks and concerns about long term adverse health effects, including cancer. We investigated whether residents of the area around Schiphol are at higher risk of developing cancer than the general Dutch population. METHODS: In a population-based study using the regional cancer registry, we estimated the cancer incidence during 1988–2003 in residents of the area surrounding Schiphol. We defined a study area based on aircraft noise contours and 4-digit postal code areas, since historical data on ambient air pollution were not available and recent emission data did not differ from the background urban air quality. RESULTS: In residents of the study area 13 207 cancer cases were diagnosed, which was close to the expected number, using national incidence rates as a reference (standardized incidence ratio [SIR] 1.02). We found a statistically significantly increased incidence of hematological malignancies (SIR 1.12, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.05, 1.19), mainly due to high rates for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (SIR 1.22, 95% CI: 1.12, 1.33) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (SIR 1.34, 95% CI: 0.95, 1.83). The incidence of cancer of the respiratory system was statistically significantly decreased (SIR 0.94, 95% CI: 0.90, 0.99), due to the low rate in males (SIR 0.89). In the core zone of the study area, cancer incidence was slightly higher than in the remaining ring zone (rate ratio of the core zone compared to the ring zone 1.05, 95% CI 1.01, 1.10). This was caused by the higher incidence of cancer of the respiratory system, prostate and the female genital organs in the core zone in comparison to the ring zone. CONCLUSION: The overall cancer incidence in the Schiphol area was similar to the national incidence. The moderately increased risk of hematological malignancies could not be explained by higher levels of ambient air pollution in the Schiphol area. This observation warrants further research, for example in a study with focus on substances in urban ambient air pollution, as similar findings were observed in Greater Amsterdam

    Aims: The aim of this thesis was to increase understanding of how molecular processes influence the development and risk assessment of childhood leukemia. Studies I and II investigates whether a specific virus infection in utero could be involved in a “first hit” in leukemogenesis. Studies III and IV examine whether alterations in protein expression from cell cycle regulating genes may predict a relapse in children with myeloid malignancies undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Background: Genetic alterations, analyzed at time of diagnosis in children who develop leukemia, have been traced back to neonatal dried blood spots (DBS). This suggests that the majority of chromosome translocations occur in utero during fetal hematopoiesis, generating a “first hit”. A “second hit” is then required to generate a leukemic clone. Today, experiments in vitro, animal models, and clinical observations have revealed that several viruses are oncogenic and capable of initiating a genetic alteration. Smith M postulated the theory that an in utero infection might be the “first hit”, causing genetic aberrations that could later lead to the development of the leukemic clone, which is supported by the early age of onset and space-time clustering data, based on time, place of birth, and diagnosis. Leukemia develops as a result of hematopoietic or lymphoid tissue with uncontrolled cell division. Normally cell division is controlled by the cell cycle, the network of which is complex with numerous regulating proteins both up and down stream, but also containing several feedback loops. The important regulators of this process are tumor suppressor genes, essential for normal cell proliferation and differentiation as well as for controlling DNA integrity. Errors in these genes or their protein expression affect the ability of the cell to check for DNA damage, thus tumors may occur. Proteins from these genes could serve as prognostic markers and predict relapse. Methods: In studies I and II we investigated neonatal DBS by PCR for the presence of adenovirus DNA (243 samples) and the three newly discovered polyomaviruses (50 samples) from children who later developed leukemia but also from controls (486 and 100 samples respectively). In studies III and IV we explored the expression of one (p53) respectively four (p53, p21, p16 and PTEN) cell cycle regulating proteins in bone marrow at diagnosis as well as pre and post HSCT in myeloid malignancies in children. We retrospectively collected clinical data and bone marrow samples from 33 children diagnosed with chronic myeloid malignancies (MDS, JMML and CML), 34 children diagnosed with AML as well as 55 controls. The samples were prepared by tissue micro array (TMA) as well as immunohistochemistry and examined for protein expression in a light microscope. Results: In study I we detected adenovirus DNA in only two patients who later developed leukemia, but in none of the controls. In study II all the samples were negative for KIPyV, WUPyV and MCPyV DNA in both patients and controls. In study III we found an overexpression of p53 protein at diagnosis that significantly predicted relapse after HSCT in children with rare chronic myeloid malignancies. In study IV a significantly higher p53 expression was found in the relapse compared to the non-relapse group at six months post HSCT in children with AML, suggesting that p53 may be used as prognostic markers for predicting a relapse. In addition, the calculated cut off level for p53 at diagnosis (study III) and at six months (study IV) post HSCT was approximately 20%, which indicates that a p53 expression over 20% may predict relapse in children with myeloid malignancies. Conclusion: Although we did not find an association between adenoviruses or the three newly discovered polyomaviruses and the development of childhood leukemia, a virus could still be involved in this process; the virus may have escaped detection, other new viruses could be involved or a virus could precipitate the “second hit”. We suggest that evaluation of p53 protein expression may be used as a supplement to regular prognostic markers both pre and post HSCT.     Human papillomavirus infection in Shenyang City, People's Republic of China: a population-based study

    To investigate the prevalence of, and risk factors for, cervical infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) in Shenyang City, People's Republic of China, we interviewed and obtained cervical cell samples from 685 women aged 15–59 years enumerated from local population lists. Human papillomavirus DNA was detected in cervical cell samples using a GP5+/6+-based PCR assay for 44 HPV types. Human papillomavirus prevalence was 16.8% overall and 13.6% among women without cervical abnormalities (16.6% and 12.4%, respectively, age-standardised to the world standard population), with no significant trends in HPV prevalence by age group. Of the 32 types identified, high-risk HPV types predominated in all age groups, HPV16 being the most common (3.4% of all women), followed by HPV52 (2.5%) and 58 (1.9%). Multiple-type infections accounted for 31.3% of all infected women. Not being married, reporting multiple sexual partners and husband's extramarital sexual relationships were all significantly associated with being HPV-positive. The disclosure of a relatively high HPV prevalence in Shenyang, in comparison with other worldwide populations, raises important questions concerning the prevention of cervical cancer in China, especially given the promising efficacy of prophylactic HPV vaccines

    Geographic clustering of testicular cancer incidence in the northern part of The Netherlands

    Geographic variations in testicular cancer incidence may be caused by differences in environmental factors, genetic factors, or both. In the present study, geographic patterns of age-adjusted testicular cancer incidence rates (IRs) in 12 provinces in The Netherlands in the period 1989–1995 were analysed. In addition, the age-adjusted IR of testicular cancer by degree of urbanization was evaluated. Cancer incidence data were obtained from the Netherlands Cancer Registry. The overall annual age-adjusted IR of testicular cancer in The Netherlands in the period 1989–1995 was 4.4 per 100 000 men. The province Groningen in the north of the country showed the highest annual IR with 5.8 per 100 000 men, which was higher (P < 0.05) than the overall IR in The Netherlands (incidence rate ratio (IRR) 1.3, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.1–1.6). The highest IR in Groningen was seen for both seminomas and non-seminomas. In addition, Groningen showed the highest age-specific IRs in all relevant younger age groups (15–29, 30–44 and 45–59 years), illustrating the consistency of data. The province Friesland, also situated in the northern part of the country, showed the second highest IR of testicular cancer with 5.3 cases per 100 000 men per year (IRR 1.2, 95% Cl 1.0–1.5, not significant). This mainly resulted from the high IR of seminoma in Friesland. Analysis of age-adjusted IRs of testicular cancer by degree of urbanization in The Netherlands showed no urban–rural differences at analysis of all histological types combined, or at separate analyses of seminomas and non-seminomas. Geographic clustering of testicular cancer seems to be present in the rural north of The Netherlands with some stable founder populations, which are likely to share a relatively high frequency of genes from common ancestors including genes possibly related to testicular cancer. Although this finding does not exclude the involvement of shared environmental factors in the aetiology of testicular cancer, it may also lend support to a genetic susceptibility to testicular cancer development. Testicular cancer cases in stable founder populations seem particularly suitable for searching for testicular cancer susceptibility genes because such genes are likely to be more frequent among affected men in such populations. © 1999 Cancer Research Campaig

    The Role of Health Kiosks in 2009: Literature and Informant Review

    Kiosks can provide patients with access to health systems in public locations, but with increasing home Internet access their usefulness is questioned. A literature and informant review identified kiosks used for taking medical histories, health promotion, self assessment, consumer feedback, patient registration, patient access to records, and remote consultations. Sited correctly with good interfaces, kiosks can be used by all demographics but many ‘projects’ have failed to become routine practice. A role remains for: (a) integrated kiosks as part of patient ‘flow’, (b) opportunistic kiosks to catch people’s attention. Both require clear ‘ownership’ to succeed
