Swift X-ray Observations of Classical Novae
The new gamma-ray burst mission Swift has obtained pointed observations of
several classical novae in outburst. We analyzed all the observations of
classical novae from the Swift archive up to 30 June, 2006. We analyzed usable
observations of 12 classical novae and found 4 non-detections, 3 weak sources
and 5 strong sources. This includes detections of 2 novae exhibiting spectra
resembling those of Super Soft X-ray binary Source spectra (SSS) implying
ongoing nuclear burning on the white dwarf surface. With these new Swift data,
we add to the growing statistics of the X-ray duration and characteristics of

Ethnic differences in respiratory impairment
Objective Spirometric Z scores by lambda-mu-sigma (LMS) rigorously account for age-related changes in lung function. Recently, the Global Lung Function Initiative (GLI) expanded LMS spirometric Z scores to multiple ethnicities. Hence, in aging populations, the GLI provides an opportunity to rigorously evaluate ethnic differences in respiratory impairment, including airflow limitation and restrictive pattern. Methods Using data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, including participants aged 40-80, we evaluated ethnic differences in GLI-defined respiratory impairment, including prevalence and associations with mortality and respiratory symptoms. Results Among 3506 white Americans, 1860 African Americans and 1749 Mexican Americans, the prevalence of airflow limitation was 15.1% (13.9% to 16.4%), 12.4% (10.7% to 14.0%) and 8.2% (6.7% to 9.8%), and restrictive pattern was 5.6% (4.6% to 6.5%), 8.0% 6.9% to 9.0%) and 5.7% (4.5% to 6.9%), respectively. Airflow limitation was associated with mortality in white Americans, African Americans and Mexican Americans - adjusted HR (aHR) 1.66 (1.23 to 2.25), 1.60 (1.09 to 2.36) and 1.80 (1.17 to 2.76), respectively, but associated with respiratory symptoms only in white Americans - adjusted OR (aOR) 2.15 (1.70 to 2.73). Restrictive pattern was associated with mortality but only in white Americans and African Americans - aHR 2.56 (1.84 to 3.55) and 3.23 (2.06 to 5.05), and associated with respiratory symptoms but only in white Americans and Mexican Americans-aOR 2.16 (1.51 to 3.07) and .12 (1.45 to 3.08), respectively. Conclusions In an aging population, we found ethnic differences in GLI-defined respiratory impairment. In particular, African Americans had high rates of respiratory impairment that were associated with mortality but not respiratory symptoms
MAXI J1659-152: the shortest orbital period black-hole binary
Following the detection of a bright new X-ray source, MAXI J1659-152, a
series of observations was triggered with almost all currently flying
high-energy missions. We report here on XMM-Newton, INTEGRAL and RXTE
observations during the early phase of the X-ray outburst of this transient
black-hole candidate. We confirm the dipping nature in the X-ray light curves.
We find that the dips recur on a period of 2.4139+/-0.0005 hrs, and interpret
this as the orbital period of the system. It is thus the shortest period
black-hole X-ray binary known to date. Using the various observables, we derive
the properties of the source. The inclination of the accretion disk with
respect to the line of sight is estimated to be 60-75 degrees. The companion
star to the black hole is possibly a M5 dwarf star, with a mass and radius of
about 0.15 M_sun and 0.23 R_sun, respectively. The system is rather compact
(orbital separation is about 1.35 R_sun) and is located at a distance of
roughly 7 kpc. In quiescence, MAXI J1659-152 is expected to be optically faint,

First Light Measurements of Capella with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory
We present the first X-ray spectrum obtained by the Low Energy Transmission
Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The spectrum
is of Capella and covers a wavelength range of 5-175 A (2.5-0.07 keV). The
measured wavelength resolution, which is in good agreement with ground
calibration, is 0.06 A (FWHM). Although in-flight
calibration of the LETGS is in progress, the high spectral resolution and
unique wavelength coverage of the LETGS are well demonstrated by the results
from Capella, a coronal source rich in spectral emission lines. While the
primary purpose of this letter is to demonstrate the spectroscopic potential of
the LETGS, we also briefly present some preliminary astrophysical results. We
discuss plasma parameters derived from line ratios in narrow spectral bands,
such as the electron density diagnostics of the He-like triplets of carbon,
nitrogen, and oxygen, as well as resonance scattering of the strong Fe XVII

Obscuration of Supersoft X-ray Sources by Circumbinary Material - A Way to Hide Type Ia Supernova Progenitors?
The progenitors of supernovae (SNe) type Ia are usually assumed to be either
a single white dwarf (WD) accreting from a non-degenerate companion (the SD
channel) or the result of two merging WDs (DD channel). However, no consensus
currently exists as to which progenitor scenario is the correct one, or whether
the observed SN Ia rate is produced by a combination of both channels. Unlike a
DD progenitor a SD progenitor is expected to emit supersoft X-rays for a
prolonged period of time (~1 Myr) as a result of the burning of accreted matter
on the surface of the WD. An argument against the SD channel as a significant
producer of SNe type Ia has been the lack of observed supersoft X-ray sources
(SSS) and the lower-than-expected integrated soft X-ray flux from elliptical
galaxies.
We wish to determine if it is possible to obscure the supersoft X-ray
emission from a nuclear burning white dwarf in an accreting single degenerate
binary system. In case of obscured systems we wish to determine their general
observational characteristics.
We examine the emergent X-ray emission from a canonical SSS system surrounded
by a spherically symmetric configuration of material, assuming a black body
spectrum with T_BB=50 eV and L=10^38 erg/s. The circumbinary material is
assumed to be of solar chemical abundances, and we leave the mechanism behind
the mass loss into the circumbinary region unspecified.
If steadily accreting, nuclear burning WDs are canonical SSS our analysis
suggests that they can be obscured by relatively modest circumbinary mass loss
rates. This may explain the discrepancy of SSS compared to the SN Ia rate
inferred from observations if the SD progenitor scenario contributes
significantly to the SN Ia rate. Recycled emissions from obscured systems may
be visible in other wavebands than X-rays. It may also explain the lack of
observed SSS in symbiotic binary systems.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted A&
Silicate dust in the environment of RS Ophiuchi following the 2006 eruption
We present further Spitzer Space Telescope observations of the recurrent nova
RS Ophiuchi, obtained over the period 208-430 days after the 2006 eruption. The
later Spitzer IRS data show that the line emission and free-free continuum
emission reported earlier is declining, revealing incontrovertible evidence for
the presence of silicate emission features at 9.7 and 18microns. We conclude
that the silicate dust survives the hard radiation impulse and shock blast wave
from the eruption. The existence of the extant dust may have significant
implications for understanding the propagation of shocks through the red giant

Unidimensional scales for fears of cancer recurrence and their psychometric properties : the FCR4 and FCR7

The study aim was to determine psychometric details of a seven question self-report scale (FCR7) and a short form (FCR4) based upon items already used in various extensive measures of FCR. Methods:Â Two consecutive samples of patients (breast and colorectal) were recruited from a single specialist cancer centre. The survey instrument contained the FCR7 items, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and demographic details. Clinical information was obtained from patient hospital records. Statistical analyses were performed using classical test and item response theory approaches, to demonstrate unidimensional factor structure and testing key parameters. Construct validity was inspected through nomological and theoretical prediction. Results:Â Internal consistency was demonstrated by alpha coefficients (FCR4: 0.93 and FCR7: 0.92). Both scales (FCR7 & FCR4) were associated with the HADs subscales as predicted. Patients who experienced chemotherapy, minor aches/pains, thought avoidance of cancer and high cancer risk belief were more fearful. Detailed inspection of item responses profile provided some support for measurement properties of scales. Conclusion: The internal consistency, and pattern of key associations and discriminability indices provided positive psychometric evidence for these scales. The brief measures of FCR may be considered for audit, screening or routine use in clinical service and research investigations.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
