La conception en tant que transmission: L'antiquité grecque selon Albert Roussel

    Get PDF

Thrasymachus’ Unerring Skill and the Arguments of Republic 1

In defending the view that justice is the advantage of the stronger, Thrasymachus puzzlingly claims that rulers never err and that any practitioner of a skill or expertise (τέχνη) is infallible. In what follows, Socrates offers a number of arguments directed against Thrasymachus’ views concerning the nature of skill, ruling, and justice. Commentators typically take a dim view of both Thrasymachus’ claims about skill (which are dismissed as an ungrounded and purely ad hoc response to Socrates’ initial criticisms) and Socrates’ latter arguments (which are deemed extremely weak). In this paper, I clarify Thrasymachus’ views (and those of several other ancients) concerning qua locutions and the nature of skill and ability and I reconstruct Socrates’ arguments against Thrasymachus’ views concerning skill and justice. I argue that Thrasymachus’ views are not ungrounded or ad hoc and that Socrates’ arguments are rather different (and significantly stronger) than often supposed

Follow-up for breast cancer - the patients' view

    Get PDF
Background: International and national guidelines (S3 guideline) for the surveillance of post-treatment breast cancer patients recommend a clinical follow-up including routine history and physical examination and regular mammograms. The practice of a clinical follow-up has been often discussed, but has been proven not to be inferior when compared to an intensified follow-up in randomized trials. Patients and Methods: The present manuscript reports the patients' view on the basis of a survey including 2000 patients with a history of breast cancer. Results: A total of 452 patients (22.6%) answered the questionnaire. The median age was 62 years (range 23-85 years). More than 80% of the patients were disease-free at the time of the survey. The need for surveillance was affirmed by the majority of patients (>95%), and one third stated that there was a need for more technical efforts during follow-up. In contrast to the follow-up guidelines, the results of the present survey indicated that most of the regularly scheduled follow-up visits were expanded using extensive laboratory and imaging procedures. Conclusion: This survey shows that the majority of physicians obviously do not accept the present follow-up guidelines. A new surveillance study investigating the efficacy of an intensified surveillance based on the improved possibilities of modern diagnostics and endocrine, immunotherapeutic, chemotherapeutic and interventional treatment options is warranted

Conceptual Model of Autonomous Seed Germination Habitat for Mars Mission

    Get PDF
As human space exploration extends to Mars, the ability to germinate seeds in extraterrestrial environments is becoming a necessity. Recent technological feats such as the development of the European Modular Cultivation System (EMCS) have made botany experiments possible on the International Space Station (ISS). Despite preliminary designs, a biocompatible plant life support system capable of traveling to Mars has yet to be developed. This study focuses on two preparatory measures regarding seed germination in spaceflight: analysis of seed dormancy protocols and compact autonomous habitat development. The objective of this project is to conceptualize a habitat capable of preserving arabidopsis plant seeds on a long duration spaceflight for the purpose of germinating the first plants on Mars. The proposed container will require a compact, low wattage system to provide gas ventilation, artificial light, and water. A visualization system will also need to be developed in order to monitor seed germination remotely. In order to test the effects of dormancy durations on plant viability, we will conduct a ground study to monitor seed germination in seeds which have been dormant for three, six, nine, and twelve months. We will also compare the effects of different sterilization procedures. The results of this study will be instrumental in developing a viable procedure for transferring the first living plants to Mars
