Isospin Character of the Pygmy Dipole Resonance in 124Sn
The pygmy dipole resonance has been studied in the proton-magic nucleus 124Sn
with the (a,a'g) coincidence method at E=136 MeV. The comparison with results
of photon-scattering experiments reveals a splitting into two components with
different structure: one group of states which is excited in (a,a'g) as well as
in (g,g') reactions and a group of states at higher energies which is only
excited in (g,g') reactions. Calculations with the self-consistent relativistic
quasiparticle time-blocking approximation and the quasiparticle phonon model
are in qualitative agreement with the experimental results and predict a
low-lying isoscalar component dominated by neutron-skin oscillations and a
higher-lying more isovector component on the tail of the giant dipole
resonance
Point process model of 1/f noise versus a sum of Lorentzians
We present a simple point process model of noise, covering
different values of the exponent . The signal of the model consists of
pulses or events. The interpulse, interevent, interarrival, recurrence or
waiting times of the signal are described by the general Langevin equation with
the multiplicative noise and stochastically diffuse in some interval resulting
in the power-law distribution. Our model is free from the requirement of a wide
distribution of relaxation times and from the power-law forms of the pulses. It
contains only one relaxation rate and yields spectra in a wide
range of frequency. We obtain explicit expressions for the power spectra and
present numerical illustrations of the model. Further we analyze the relation
of the point process model of noise with the Bernamont-Surdin-McWhorter
model, representing the signals as a sum of the uncorrelated components. We
show that the point process model is complementary to the model based on the
sum of signals with a wide-range distribution of the relaxation times. In
contrast to the Gaussian distribution of the signal intensity of the sum of the
uncorrelated components, the point process exhibits asymptotically a power-law
distribution of the signal intensity. The developed multiplicative point
process model of noise may be used for modeling and analysis of
stochastic processes in different systems with the power-law distribution of
the intensity of pulsing signals.Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
The High-Flux Backscattering Spectrometer at the NIST Center for Neutron Research
We describe the design and current performance of the high-flux
backscattering spectrometer located at the NIST Center for Neutron Research.
The design incorporates several state-of-the-art neutron optical devices to
achieve the highest flux on sample possible while maintaining an energy
resolution of less than 1mueV. Foremost among these is a novel phase-space
transformation chopper that significantly reduces the mismatch between the beam
divergences of the primary and secondary parts of the instrument. This resolves
a long-standing problem of backscattering spectrometers, and produces a
relative gain in neutron flux of 4.2. A high-speed Doppler-driven monochromator
system has been built that is capable of achieving energy transfers of up to
+-50mueV, thereby extending the dynamic range of this type of spectrometer by
more than a factor of two over that of other reactor-based backscattering
instruments
Study of 2b-decay of Mo-100 and Se-82 using the NEMO3 detector
After analysis of 5797 h of data from the detector NEMO3, new limits on
neutrinoless double beta decay of Mo-100 (T_{1/2} > 3.1 10^{23} y, 90% CL) and
Se-82 (T_{1/2} > 1.4 10^{23} y, 90% CL) have been obtained. The corresponding
limits on the effective majorana neutrino mass are: m < (0.8-1.2) eV and m <
(1.5-3.1) eV, respectively. Also the limits on double-beta decay with Majoron
emission are: T_{1/2} > 1.4 10^{22} y (90% CL) for Mo-100 and T_{1/2}> 1.2
10^{22} y (90%CL) for Se-82. Corresponding bounds on the Majoron-neutrino
coupling constant are g < (0.5-0.9) 10^{-4} and < (0.7-1.6) 10^{-4}.
Two-neutrino 2b-decay half-lives have been measured with a high accuracy,
T_{1/2} Mo-100 = [7.68 +- 0.02(stat) +- 0.54(syst) ] 10^{18} y and T_{1/2}
Se-82 = [10.3 +- 0.3(stat) +- 0.7(syst) ] 10^{19} y.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Limits on different Majoron decay modes of Mo and Se for neutrinoless double beta decays in the NEMO-3 experiment
The NEMO-3 tracking detector is located in the Fr\'ejus Underground
Laboratory. It was designed to study double beta decay in a number of different
isotopes. Presented here are the experimental half-life limits on the double
beta decay process for the isotopes Mo and Se for different
Majoron emission modes and limits on the effective neutrino-Majoron coupling
constants. In particular, new limits on "ordinary" Majoron (spectral index 1)
decay of Mo ( y) and Se ( y) have been obtained. Corresponding bounds on the
Majoron-neutrino coupling constant are

Numerical experiments with p F- and q D-strings: the formation of (p,q) bound states
We investigate the behaviour of (p,q) string networks, focusing on two
aspects: (1) modelling more realistic (p,q) string networks than the Z_N
networks used so far and (2) investigating the effect of long-range
interactions on the evolution of the network. We model the network with no
long-range interactions using two sets of fields, complex scalars coupled to
gauge fields, with a potential chosen such that the two types of strings will
form bound states. This way we can model junctions of 3 strings with different
tension; in Z_N models used so far in simulations all the strings have
identical tensions. In order to introduce long-range interactions we also study
a network in which one of the scalars forms global strings. We observe that in
the absence of long-range interactions the formation of bound states has a
significant influence on the evolution of the network. When long-range
interactions are turned on the bound states are short-lived and have a minimal
effect on the network evolution.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, JCAP styl
Measurement of double beta decay of 100Mo to excited states in the NEMO 3 experiment
The double beta decay of 100Mo to the 0^+_1 and 2^+_1 excited states of 100Ru
is studied using the NEMO 3 data. After the analysis of 8024 h of data the
half-life for the two-neutrino double beta decay of 100Mo to the excited 0^+_1
state is measured to be T^(2nu)_1/2 = [5.7^{+1.3}_{-0.9}(stat)+/-0.8(syst)]x
10^20 y. The signal-to-background ratio is equal to 3. Information about energy
and angular distributions of emitted electrons is also obtained. No evidence
for neutrinoless double beta decay to the excited 0^+_1 state has been found.
The corresponding half-life limit is T^(0nu)_1/2(0^+ --> 0^+_1) > 8.9 x 10^22 y
(at 90% C.L.).
The search for the double beta decay to the 2^+_1 excited state has allowed
the determination of limits on the half-life for the two neutrino mode
T^(2nu)_1/2(0^+ --> 2^+_1) > 1.1 x 10^21 y (at 90% C.L.) and for the
neutrinoless mode T^(0nu)_1/2(0^+ --> 2^+_1) > 1.6 x 10^23 y (at 90% C.L.).Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, submitted to Nucl. Phy
Constraints on Brane Inflation and Cosmic Strings
By considering simple, but representative, models of brane inflation from a
single brane-antibrane pair in the slow roll regime, we provide constraints on
the parameters of the theory imposed by measurements of the CMB anisotropies by
WMAP including a cosmic string component. We find that inclusion of the string
component is critical in constraining parameters. In the most general model
studied, which includes an inflaton mass term, as well as the brane-antibrane
attraction, values n_s < 1.02 are compatible with the data at 95 % confidence
level. We are also able to constrain the volume of internal manifold (modulo
factors dependent on the warp factor) and the value of the inflaton field to be
less than 0.66M_P at horizon exit. We also investigate models with a mass term.
These observational considerations suggest that such models have r < 2*10^-5,
which can only be circumvented in the fast roll regime, or by increasing the
number of antibranes. Such a value of r would not be detectable in CMB
polarization experiment likely in the near future, but the B-mode signal from
the cosmic strings could be detectable. We present forecasts of what a similar
analysis using PLANCK data would yield and find that it should be possible to
rule out G\mu > 6.5*10^-8 using just the TT, TE and EE power spectra.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, revtex4, typos corrected, references adde
