Studies on the RF Deflectors for CTF3
The bunch train compression scheme for the CLIC Test Facility CTF3 relies on the feasibility of fast RF deflectors. They are essentially RF cavities or TW sections working on transverse. deflecting mode. The most demanding issues in the deflector design are those related to the beam dynamics, including the beam loading effects on the fundamental deflecting mode, while the efficiency required by the CTF3 parameters can be met by already existing structures. The analysis of the beam dynamics, which addresses the deflector design is reported in this paper, and different structures representing possible solutions are compared
Search for strange quark matter and Q-balls with the SLIM experiment
We report on the search for Strange Quark Matter (SQM) and charged Q-balls
with the SLIM experiment at the Chacaltaya High Altitude Laboratory (5230 m
a.s.l.) from 2001 to 2005. The SLIM experiment was a 427 m array of
Nuclear Track Detectors (NTDs) arranged in modules of cm
area. SLIM NTDs were exposed to the cosmic radiation for 4.22 years after which
they were brought back to the Bologna Laboratory where they were etched and
analyzed. We estimate the properties and energy losses in matter of nuclearites
(large SQM nuggets), strangelets (small charged SQM nuggets) and Q-balls; and
discuss their detection with the SLIM experiment. The flux upper limits in the
CR of such downgoing particles are at the level of /cm/s/sr

Second-order -regularity in nonlinear elliptic problems
A second-order regularity theory is developed for solutions to a class of
quasilinear elliptic equations in divergence form, including the -Laplace
equation, with merely square-integrable right-hand side. Our results amount to
the existence and square integrability of the weak derivatives of the nonlinear
expression of the gradient under the divergence operator. This provides a
nonlinear counterpart of the classical -coercivity theory for linear
problems, which is missing in the existing literature. Both local and global
estimates are established. The latter apply to solutions to either Dirichlet or
Neumann boundary value problems. Minimal regularity on the boundary of the
domain is required. If the domain is convex, no regularity of its boundary is
needed at all
Proposal for taking data with the KLOE-2 detector at the DANE collider upgraded in energy
This document reviews the physics program of the KLOE-2 detector at
DANE upgraded in energy and provides a simple solution to run the
collider above the -peak (up to 2, possibly 2.5 GeV). It is shown how a
precise measurement of the multihadronic cross section in the energy region up
to 2 (possibly 2.5) GeV would have a major impact on the tests of the Standard
Model through a precise determination of the anomalous magnetic moment of the
muon and the effective fine-structure constant at the scale. With a
luminosity of about cms, DANE upgraded in energy
can perform a scan in the region from 1 to 2.5 GeV in one year by collecting an
integrated luminosity of 20 pb (corresponding to a few days of data
taking) for single point, assuming an energy step of 25 MeV. A few years of
data taking in this region would provide important tests of QCD and effective
theories by physics with open thresholds for pseudo-scalar (like
the ), scalar (, etc...) and axial-vector (, etc...)
mesons; vector-mesons spectroscopy and baryon form factors; tests of CVC and
searches for exotics. In the final part of the document a technical solution
for the energy upgrade of DANE is proposed.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figure
DESIGN, FABRICATION AND HIGH POWER RF TEST OF A C-BAND ACCELERATING STRUCTURE FOR FEASIBILITY STUDY OF THE SPARC PHOTO-INJECTOR ENERGY UPGRADE
Abstract The energy upgrade of the SPARC photo-injector from 160 to more than 260 MeV will be done by replacing a low gradient 3m S-Band structure with two 1.4m high gradient C-band structures. The structures are travelling wave, constant impedance sections, have symmetric waveguide input couplers and have been optimized to work with a SLED RF input pulse. A prototype with a reduced number of cells has been fabricated and tested at high power in KEK (Japan) giving very good performances in terms of breakdown rates ( m bpp / 10 6 ) at high accelerating gradient (>50 MV/m). The paper illustrates the design criteria of the structures, the fabrication procedure and the high power RF test results

Measurement of the t t-bar production cross section in the dilepton channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
The t t-bar production cross section (sigma[t t-bar]) is measured in
proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV in data collected by the CMS
experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 inverse
femtobarns. The measurement is performed in events with two leptons (electrons
or muons) in the final state, at least two jets identified as jets originating
from b quarks, and the presence of an imbalance in transverse momentum. The
measured value of sigma[t t-bar] for a top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV is 161.9 +/-
2.5 (stat.) +5.1/-5.0 (syst.) +/- 3.6(lumi.) pb, consistent with the prediction
