Quantum graphs where back-scattering is prohibited
We describe a new class of scattering matrices for quantum graphs in which
back-scattering is prohibited. We discuss some properties of quantum graphs
with these scattering matrices and explain the advantages and interest in their
study. We also provide two methods to build the vertex scattering matrices

Towards an analytical framework of science communication models
This chapter reviews the discussion in science communication circles of models for public communication of science and technology (PCST). It questions the claim that there has been a large-scale shift from a âdeficit modelâ of communication to a âdialogue modelâ, and it demonstrates the survival of the deficit model along with the ambiguities of that model. Similar discussions in related fields of communication, including the critique of dialogue, are briefly sketched. Outlining the complex circumstances governing approaches to PCST, the author argues that communications models often perceived to be opposed can, in fact, coexist when the choices are made explicit. Comparative Modelling of the Spectra of Cool Giants
Our ability to extract information from the spectra of stars depends on
reliable models of stellar atmospheres and appropriate techniques for spectral
synthesis. Various model codes and strategies for the analysis of stellar
spectra are available today. We aim to compare the results of deriving stellar
parameters using different atmosphere models and different analysis strategies.
The focus is set on high-resolution spectroscopy of cool giant stars. Spectra
representing four cool giant stars were made available to various groups and
individuals working in the area of spectral synthesis, asking them to derive
stellar parameters from the data provided. The results were discussed at a
workshop in Vienna in 2010. Most of the major codes currently used in the
astronomical community for analyses of stellar spectra were included in this
experiment. We present the results from the different groups, as well as an
additional experiment comparing the synthetic spectra produced by various codes
for a given set of stellar parameters. Similarities and differences of the
results are discussed. Several valid approaches to analyze a given spectrum of
a star result in quite a wide range of solutions. The main causes for the
differences in parameters derived by different groups seem to lie in the
physical input data and in the details of the analysis method. This clearly

"It's a can of worms": understanding primary care practitioners' behaviours in relation to HPV using the Theoretical Domains Framework
Background: The relationship between infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer is transforming cervical cancer prevention. HPV tests and vaccinations have recently become available. In Ireland, as elsewhere, primary care practitioners play a key role in prevention. ATHENS (A Trial of HPV Education and Support) aims to develop a theorybased intervention to support primary care practitioners in their HPV-related practice. This study, the first step in the intervention development process, aimed to: identify HPV-related clinical behaviours that the intervention will target; clarify general practitionersâ (GPsâ) and practice nursesâ roles and responsibilities; and determine factors that potentially influence clinical behaviour. A secondary objective was to informally assess the utility of the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) in understanding clinical behaviours in an area with an evolving evidence-base.
Methods: In-depth semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with GPs and practice nurses. The topic guide, which contained open questions and HPV-related clinical scenarios, was developed through literature review and clinical experience. Interview transcripts were content-analysed using the TDF as the coding framework.
Results: 19 GPs and 14 practice nurses were interviewed. The major HPV-related clinical behaviours were: initiating a discussion about HPV infection with female patients; offering/recommending HPV vaccination to appropriate patients; and answering patientsâ questions about HPV testing. While the responsibility for taking smears was considered a female role, both male and female practitioners dealt with HPV-related issues. All 12 theoretical domains arose in relation to HPV infection; the domains judged to be most important were: knowledge, emotion, social influences, beliefs about capabilities and beliefs about consequences. Eleven domains emerged in relation to HPV vaccination, with beliefs about consequences, social influences, knowledge and environmental context and resources judged to be the most important. Nine domains were relevant to HPV testing, with knowledge and beliefs about capabilities judged to be the most important.
Conclusions: The findings confirm the need for an intervention to support primary care practitioners around HPV and suggest it should target a range of theoretical domains. The TDF proved valuable in analysing qualitative data collected using a topic guide not specifically designed to capture TDF domains and understanding clinical behaviours in an area with an evolving evidence-base
Feasibility studies of the time-like proton electromagnetic form factor measurements with PANDA at FAIR
The possibility of measuring the proton electromagnetic form factors in the
time-like region at FAIR with the \PANDA detector is discussed. Detailed
simulations on signal efficiency for the annihilation of into a
lepton pair as well as for the most important background channels have been
performed. It is shown that precision measurements of the differential cross
section of the reaction can be obtained in a wide
angular and kinematical range. The individual determination of the moduli of
the electric and magnetic proton form factors will be possible up to a value of
momentum transfer squared of (GeV/c). The total cross section will be measured up to (GeV/c).
The results obtained from simulated events are compared to the existing data.

The Expanding Fireball of Nova Delphini 2013
A classical nova occurs when material accreting onto the surface of a white
dwarf in a close binary system ignites in a thermonuclear runaway. Complex
structures observed in the ejecta at late stages could result from interactions
with the companion during the common envelope phase. Alternatively, the
explosion could be intrinsically bipolar, resulting from a localized ignition
on the surface of the white dwarf or as a consequence of rotational distortion.
Studying the structure of novae during the earliest phases is challenging
because of the high spatial resolution needed to measure their small sizes.
Here we report near-infrared interferometric measurements of the angular size
of Nova Delphini 2013, starting from one day after the explosion and continuing
with extensive time coverage during the first 43 days. Changes in the apparent
expansion rate can be explained by an explosion model consisting of an
optically thick core surrounded by a diffuse envelope. The optical depth of the
ejected material changes as it expands. We detect an ellipticity in the light
distribution, suggesting a prolate or bipolar structure that develops as early
as the second day. Combining the angular expansion rate with radial velocity
measurements, we derive a geometric distance to the nova of 4.54 +/- 0.59 kpc

Greater maintenance of bone mineral content in male than female athletes, and in sprinting and jumping than endurance athletes: a longitudinal study of bone strength in elite masters athletes
Summary: We investigated longitudinal changes in tibia bone strength in master power (jumping and sprinting) and endurance (distance) athletes of both sexes. Bone mass but not crossâsectional moment of inertia was better maintained in power than endurance athletes over time, particularly in men and independent of changes in performance.
Objective: Assessment of effects of sex and athletic discipline (lower limb power events e.g. sprint running and jumping versus endurance running events) on longitudinal changes in bone strength in masters athletes.
Methods: We examined tibia and fibula bone properties at distal (4% distalâproximal tibia length) and proximal (66% length) sites using peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) in seventyâone track and field masters athletes (30 male, 41 female, age at baseline 57.0±12.2y) in a longitudinal cohort study that included at least two testing sessions over a mean period of 4.2±3.1y. Effects of time, as well as time*sex and time*discipline interactions on bone parameters and calf muscle crossâsectional area (CSA) were examined.
Results: Effects of time were sex and disciplineâdependent, even following adjustment for enrolment age, sex, and changes in muscle CSA and athletic performance. Male sex and participation in power events was associated with better maintenance of tibia bone mineral content (BMC, an indicator of bone compressive strength) at 4% and 66% sites. In contrast, there was no strong evidence of sex or discipline effects on crossâsectional moment of inertia (CSMI, an indicator of bone bending and torsional strength â P > 0.3 for interactions). Similar sex and disciplineâspecific changes were also observed in the fibula.
Conclusions: Results suggest that male athletes and those participating in lower limb powerâbased rather than enduranceâbased disciplines have better maintenance of bone compressive but not bending and torsional strength
The Global Ambitions of Irish Universities: Internationalizing Practices and Emerging Stratification in the Irish Higher Education Sector
As higher education is increasingly harnessed to national economic goals and as funding shifts from public to private sources, Irish universities are under unprecedented pressure to âinternationalize.â Yet the way they mediate national policy is constrained by funding and market forces as well as by their own organizational features and position in the field. Analysis of bilateral non-EU partnerships reveals competing logics of prestige, finances, and alignment with national ambitions in the global economy. Historical hierarchies between Irish third-level institutions are thus reinforced, while internally, status distinctions emerge between the various types of partnerships and student exchange programs. The shape taken by internationalization may reinforce various strands of inter-institutional and intra-institutional inequality, without guaranteeing that Irish universities succeed in their ambitions to achieve âworld-classâ status
Current Welfare Problems Facing Horses in Great Britain as Identified by Equine Stakeholders
Despite growing concerns about the welfare of horses in Great Britain (GB) there has been little surveillance of the welfare status of the horse population. Consequently we have limited knowledge of the range of welfare problems experienced by horses in GB and the situations in which poor welfare occurs. Thirty-one in-depth interviews were conducted with a cross -section of equine stakeholders, in order to explore their perceptions of the welfare problems faced by horses in GB. Welfare problems relating to health, management and riding and training were identified, including horses being under or over weight, stabling 24 hours a day and the inappropriate use of training aids. The interviewees also discussed broader contexts in which they perceived that welfare was compromised. The most commonly discussed context was where horses are kept in unsuitable environments, for example environments with poor grazing. The racing industry and travellers horses were identified as areas of the industry where horse welfare was particularly vulnerable to compromise. Lack of knowledge and financial constraints were perceived to be the root cause of poor welfare by many interviewees. The findings give insight into the range of welfare problems that may be faced by horses in GB, the contexts in which these may occur and their possible causes. Many of the problems identified by the interviewees have undergone limited scientific investigation pointing to areas where further research is likely to be necessary for welfare improvement. The large number of issues identified suggests that some form of prioritisation may be necessary to target research and resources effectively
