    Treatment Components and Mechanisms of Change in Guided Self-Help for Parents of Children with Externalizing Behavior Problems

    Although self-help parent management training represents an effective form of treatment with low barriers for families, little is known about how change is induced. The present thesis analyzed treatment components and process mechanisms of telephone-assisted self-help parent management training with a behavioral basis and a nondirective basis for child externalizing behavior problems. In a randomized controlled trial, parents of children aged 4 to 11 years with externalizing behavior problems were allocated to telephone-assisted self-help parent management training with a behavioral basis or a nondirective basis, including self-help booklets and therapist consultations via telephone. The per-protocol sample included 108 families. Based on existing measures and predefined psychometric criteria, the Therapist Intervention Scale (TIS) was developed to analyze treatment components in the self-help booklets and the audiotaped telephone consultations. Furthermore, a potential mediating effect of therapist behavior on child outcomes was examined. From an exploratory perspective, parental adherence was analyzed as a potential sequential mediator following therapist behavior. Exploratory factor analyses suggested the formation of the TIS scales Guidance & Structures as well as Relationship & Emotions. Reliability indices were acceptable to excellent. Indices for construct validity were mostly in line with the hypotheses. As expected, therapists and booklets showed a stronger emphasis on guidance and structures in the behavioral intervention and a stronger emphasis on the emotions and relationships in the nondirective intervention. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the group effect on child attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder severity and functional impairment was mediated by therapists’ emphasis on emotions and relationships in the nondirective intervention. The exploratory sequential mediation analyses indicated a potential sequential mediation effect of parental adherence following therapist behavior. We did not find a mediation effect for therapists’ emphasis on guiding and structuring or for the behavioral intervention. In conclusion, the analyses support the reliability as well as the validity of the self-developed TIS scales. In accordance with their theoretical basis, the two interventions showed distinct treatment profiles. The findings underline the importance of therapists’ emphasis on emotions and relationships for change in child outcomes as a potential unique process mechanism in the nondirective intervention and complement findings on process mechanisms of the behavioral intervention. Future research might analyze additional mediators of change and include potential moderators in one model, which might deepen our understanding of the process mechanisms underlying treatment approaches

    Toward a Dimensional Assessment of Externalizing Disorders in Children: Reliability and Validity of a Semi-Structured Parent Interview

    Objective This study assesses the reliability and validity of the DSM-5-based, semi-structured Clinical Parent Interview for Externalizing Disorders in Children and Adolescents (ILF-EXTERNAL). Method Participant data were drawn from the ongoing ESCAschool intervention study. The ILF-EXTERNAL was evaluated in a clinical sample of 474 children and adolescents (aged 6-12 years, 92 females) with symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). To obtain interrater reliability, the one-way random-effects, absolute agreement models of the intraclass correlation (ICC) for single ICC(1,1) and average measurements ICC(1,3) were computed between the interviewers and two independent raters for 45 randomly selected interviews involving ten interviewers. Overall agreement on DSM-5 diagnoses was assessed using Fleiss' kappa. Further analyses evaluated internal consistencies, item-total correlations as well as correlations between symptom severity and the degree of functional impairment. Additionally, parents completed the German version of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and two DSM-5-based parent questionnaires for the assessment of ADHD symptoms and symptoms of disruptive behavior disorders (FBB-ADHS; FBB-SSV), which were used to evaluate convergent and divergent validity. Results ICC coefficients demonstrated very good to excellent interrater reliability on the item and scale level of the ILF-EXTERNAL [scale level: ICC(1,1) = 0.83-0.95; ICC(1,3) = 0.94-0.98]. Overall kappa agreement on DSM-5 diagnoses was substantial to almost perfect for most disorders (0.38 ≤ κ ≤ 0.94). With some exceptions, internal consistencies (0.60 ≤ α ≤ 0.86) and item-total correlations (0.21 ≤ rit_{it} ≤ 0.71) were generally satisfactory to good. Furthermore, higher symptom severity was associated with a higher degree of functional impairment. The evaluation of convergent validity revealed positive results regarding clinical judgment and parent ratings (FBB-ADHS; FBB-SSV). Correlations between the ILF-EXTERNAL scales and the CBCL Externalizing Problems were moderate to high. Finally, the ILF-EXTERNAL scales were significantly more strongly associated with the CBCL Externalizing Problems than with the Internalizing Problems, indicating divergent validity. Conclusion In clinically referred, school-age children, the ILF-EXTERNAL demonstrates sound psychometric properties. The ILF-EXTERNAL is a promising clinical interview and contributes to high-quality diagnostics of externalizing disorders in children and adolescents

    Global maps of soil temperature

    Research in global change ecology relies heavily on global climatic grids derived from estimates of air temperature in open areas at around 2 m above the ground. These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1-km² resolution for 0–5 and 5–15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e., offset) between in-situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1-km² pixels (summarized from 8500 unique temperature sensors) across all the world’s major terrestrial biomes, and coarse-grained air temperature estimates from ERA5-Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (-0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome-specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near-surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil-related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. Nevertheless, we highlight the need to fill remaining geographic gaps by collecting more in-situ measurements of microclimate conditions to further enhance the spatiotemporal resolution of global soil temperature products for ecological applications

    How preparation-for-learning with a worked versus an open inventing problem affect subsequent learning processes in pre-service teachers

    A worked-out or an open inventing problem with contrasting cases can prepare learners for learning from subsequent instruction differently regarding motivation and cognition. In addition, such activities potentially initiate different learning processes during the subsequent (future) learning phase. In this experiment (N = 45 pre-service teachers), we aimed to replicate effects of earlier studies on learning outcomes and, on this basis, to analyze respective learning processes during the future-learning phase via think-aloud protocols. The inventing group invented criteria to assess learning strategies in learning journals while the worked-example group studied the same problem in a solved version. Afterwards, the pre-service teachers thought aloud during learning in a computer-based learning environment. We did not find substantial motivational differences (interest, self-efficacy), but the worked-example group clearly outperformed their counterparts in transfer (BF+0 > 313). We found moderate evidence for the hypothesis that their learning processes during the subsequent learning phase was deepened: the example group showed more elaborative processes, more spontaneous application of the canonical, but also of sub-optimal solutions than the inventing group (BFs around 4), and it tended to focus more on the most relevant learning contents. Explorative analyses suggest that applying canonical solutions to examples is one of the processes explaining why working through the solution leads to higher transfer. In conclusion, a worked-out inventing problem seems to prepare future learning more effectively than an open inventing activity by deepening and focusing subsequent learning processes

    Affective dysregulation in childhood - optimizing prevention and treatment: protocol of three randomized controlled trials in the ADOPT study

    BACKGROUND: The terms affective dysregulation (AD) and irritability describe transdiagnostic dimensions and are characterized by an excessive reactivity to negative emotional stimuli with an affective (anger) and a behavioral component (aggression). Due to early onset, high prevalence and persistence, as well as developmental comorbidity, AD in childhood is one of the most psychosocially impairing and cost-intensive mental health conditions. AD is especially prevalent in children in the youth welfare service. Despite continuous research, there remains a substantial need for diagnostic approaches and optimization of individualized treatment strategies in order to improve outcomes and reduce the subjective and economic burden. METHODS: The ADOPT (Affective Dysregulation - Optimizing Prevention and Treatment) Consortium integrates internationally established, highly experienced and interdisciplinary research groups. The work program encompasses (a) epidemiology, including prevalence of symptoms and disorders, (b) development and evaluation of screening and assessment tools, (c) stepped care approaches for clinically useful personalized medicine, (d) evaluation of an easily accessible and cost-effective online intervention as indicated prevention (treatment effects, moderation/mediation analysis), and (e) evaluation of an intensive personalized modular outpatient treatment in a cohort of children with AD who live with their parents and in a cohort of children with AD who live in out-of-home care (treatment effects, moderation/mediation analysis). DISCUSSION: The results will lead to significant recommendations for improving treatment within routine clinical care in two cohorts of children with AD and coexisting conditions, especially oppositional-defiant disorder, conduct disorder and disruptive mood dysregulation disorder.     Treatment components in behavioral versus nondirective telephone-assisted self-help interventions for parents of children with externalizing behavior problems

    Background The aim of this study was to analyze treatment differentiation in a behavioral and a nondirective telephone-assisted self-help intervention for parents of children with externalizing behavior problems, including the development and evaluation of a rating scale. Methods In a randomized controlled trial, 149 parents of children aged 4-11 years with externalizing behavior problems were allocated to a behavioral or a nondirective guided self-help intervention. Parents in both conditions received eight self-help booklets and ten telephone consultations. To analyze the content of the interventions, we developed the Therapist Intervention Scale (TIS). In order to evaluate the scale and analyze treatment differentiation, parent booklets and recorded telephone consultations were rated. Results Item selection and scale development were based on predefined psychometric criteria. The subscales Guidance & Structures and Relationship & Emotions were developed based on exploratory factor analyses. Interrater reliability and internal consistency were found to be acceptable to excellent. Analyses of construct validity demonstrated positive correlations for corresponding and negative correlations for non-corresponding subscales of therapist ratings. Therapists and booklets in the behavioral intervention showed higher scores on the subscale Guidance & Structures, while therapists and booklets in the nondirective intervention showed higher scores on the subscale Relationship & Emotions. Conclusion The analyses of the TIS support its reliability and validity. The subscale Guidance & Structures contains mainly cognitive-behavioral treatment components, while the subscale Relationship & Emotions contains mainly nondirective treatment components. The implemented telephone-assisted self-help interventions demonstrated distinct treatment profiles which match their intended therapeutic approaches

    A role for brain-specific homeobox factor Bsx in the control of hyperphgia and locomotory behavior

    Food intake and activity-induced thermogenesis are important components of energy balance regulation. The molecular mechanism underlying the coordination of food intake with locomotory behavior to maintain energy homeostasis is unclear. We report that the brain-specific homeobox transcription factor Bsx is required for locomotory behavior, hyperphagia, and expression of the hypothalamic neuropeptides Npy and Agrp, which regulate feeding behavior and body weight. Mice lacking Bsx exhibit reduced locomotor activity and lower expression of Npy and Agrp. They also exhibit attenuated physiological responses to fasting, including reduced increase of Npy/Agrp expression, lack of food-seeking behavior, and reduced rebound hyperphagia. Furthermore, Bsx gene disruption rescues the obese phenotype of leptin-deficient ob/ob mice by reducing their hyperphagia without increasing their locomotor activity. Thus, Bsx represents an essential factor for NPY/AgRP neuronal function and locomotory behavior in the control of energy balance.status: publishe

    The study examined potential mediating effects of therapist behaviors in the per-protocol sample (n = 108) of a randomized controlled trial comparing a behavioral and a nondirective guided self-help intervention for parents of children with externalizing disorders (4-11 years). Additionally, from an exploratory perspective, we analyzed a sequential model with parental adherence as second mediator following therapist behavior. Outcomes were child symptom severity of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder rated by blinded clinicians, and parent-rated child functional impairment. We found a significant indirect effect on the reduction of ADHD and functional impairment through emotion- and relationship-focused therapist behavior in the nondirective intervention. Additionally, we found limited support for an extended sequential mediation effect through therapist behavior and parental adherence in the models for these outcomes. The study proposes potential mediating mechanisms unique to the nondirective intervention and complements previous findings on mediator processes in favor of the behavioral group.
