Get PDF
In this paper we show how to efficiently implement parallel discrete simulations on multicoreandGPUarchitecturesthrougharealexampleofanapplication: acellularautomatamodel of laser dynamics. We describe the techniques employed to build and optimize the implementations using OpenMP and CUDA frameworks. We have evaluated the performance on two different hardware platforms that represent different target market segments: high-end platforms for scientific computing, using an Intel Xeon Platinum 8259CL server with 48 cores, and also an NVIDIA Tesla V100GPU,bothrunningonAmazonWebServer(AWS)Cloud;and on a consumer-oriented platform, using an Intel Core i9 9900k CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 TI GPU. Performance results were compared and analyzed in detail. We show that excellent performance and scalability can be obtained in both platforms, and we extract some important issues that imply a performance degradation for them. We also found that current multicore CPUs with large core numbers can bring a performance very near to that of GPUs, and even identical in some cases.Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad, Gobierno de España (MINECO), and the Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI) of Spain, cofinanced by FEDER funds (EU) TIN2017-89842

One-pot synthesis of ZnO–Ag and ZnO–Co nanohybrid materials for photocatalytic applications

Get PDF
ZnO–Ag and ZnO–Co nanohybrid materials with different Ag and Co contents were successfully prepared through a simple one-pot method at room temperature in the absence of surfactants. This synthesis route is effective and environmentally friendly and can produce spherical nanoparticles with sizes between 7 and 20 nm. The nanohybrid materials were characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Their photocatalytic activity was evidenced by discoloration of the synthetic diazo dye Bismarck brown Y; ZnO–Ag nanohybrid materials had greater efficiency for decolorization of the dye compared with ZnO–Co, ZnO, and TiO2. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the ZnO–Ag nanohybrid material is due to three important aspects: (1) the oxygen vacancies present on the ZnO surface, (2) the efficient absorption of visible light due to the interaction of the semiconductor and the surface plasmon resonance of Ag, and (3) the effective separation of charges due to the formation of the Schottky barrier between ZnO and Ag, where Ag acts as an electron trap, and thereby reduces recombination. When the ZnO–Co nanohybrid is used, the addition of Co introduces intermediate energy levels between the valence and conduction bands on the semiconductor surface, which results in a recombination that reduces the photocatalytic activity, making the azo dye decolorization less efficient

his study analyzed muscle activity during the stand-up paddle stroke, considering the paddling side and the adjacent and opposing muscles relative to the position of the arms during paddling. Methods: Fourteen male paddleboarders performed three trials covering 195 m in which surface electromyography of the upper trapezius, biceps brachii, triceps brachii, tibialis anterior, and gastrocnemius medialis were recorded (four-cycle strokes on each side). The data were processed according to percentage of maximum voluntary contraction (% MVC). The MVC activation values (µV) for each muscle were then calculated and presented as percentage MVC (% MVC). Results: The recovery phase accounted for 60% of the paddle cycle, while the pull phase represented 39%. During right-side paddling, higher % MVC was found in the opposite-side upper trapezius (24.35%, p < 0.01) during the pulling phase and in the adjacent biceps brachii (8.36%, p < 0.03) during the recovery phase. In left-side paddling, greater % MVC was found in the opposite-side upper trapezius (27.60%, p < 0.01) during the pulling phase and in the opposite-side triceps brachii (42.25%, p < 0.04) during the recovery phase. Furthermore, the pulling phase exhibited higher MVC in the opposite-side upper trapezius compared to the recovery phase, both in the right-side (24.35%, p < 0.03) and left-side (27.60%, p < 0.01) paddling. Conclusions: these findings help establish the muscular activity of both sides of the paddling technique and the differences between the upper and lower limbs.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Drilling of carbon fibre reinforced laminates : a study

Get PDF
The distinguishing characteristics of carbon fibre reinforced laminates, like low weight, high strength or stiffness, had resulted in an increase of their use during the last decades. Although parts are normally produced to near-net shape, machining operations like drilling are still needed. In result of composites non-homogeneity, this operation can lead to delamination, considered the most serious kind of damage as it can reduce the load carrying capacity of the joint. A proper choice of tool and cutting parameters can reduce delamination substantially. In this work the results obtained with five different tool geometries are compared. Conclusions show that the choice of adequate drill geometry can reduce thrust forces, thus delamination damage

La imagen y la narrativa como herramientas para el abordaje psicosocial en escenarios de violencia. Departamentos de Cauca y Valle del Cauca

Get PDF
The armed conflict in the country has claimed the lives of countless people, there are many missing people, which does not allow us to have a real number of victims, this war knows no gender, religion or social class because everyone to a greater or lesser extent have been affected by it. In the following document a recognition will be made, starting from two violent scenarios, in the first place the case of Shimaia will be approached in which the community, family and individual efforts of the protagonist will be highlighted in order to achieve justice and reparation as a survivor of the socio-political violence of the country and in a second moment three strategies will be presented within a psychosocial approach to the case of the Salado massacre that occurred more than twenty years ago. In the same way, an analytical and reflective report will be made, using the tool of photo voice from five different scenarios within the departments of Cauca and Valle del Cauca. Finally, it is possible to contextualize that although it is true that violence in the country does not give truce, communities and people have managed to face situations in a resilient manner with the purpose of transforming their realities

guide to clinicians

Funding This work received an unrestricted grant from GSK Portugal and was supported by Sociedade Portuguesa de Ginecologia (SPG).Sepsis is defined as a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. In this context, biomarkers could be considered as indicators of either infection or dysregulated host response or response to treatment and/or aid clinicians to prognosticate patient risk. More than 250 biomarkers have been identified and evaluated over the last few decades, but no biomarker accurately differentiates between sepsis and sepsis-like syndrome. Published data support the use of biomarkers for pathogen identification, clinical diagnosis, and optimization of antibiotic treatment. In this narrative review, we highlight how clinicians could improve the use of pathogen-specific and of the most used host-response biomarkers, procalcitonin and C-reactive protein, to improve the clinical care of patients with sepsis. Biomarker kinetics are more useful than single values in predicting sepsis, when making the diagnosis and assessing the response to antibiotic therapy. Finally, integrated biomarker-guided algorithms may hold promise to improve both the diagnosis and prognosis of sepsis. Herein, we provide current data on the clinical utility of pathogen-specific and host-response biomarkers, offer guidance on how to optimize their use, and propose the needs for future research.publishersversionepub_ahead_of_prin

PPAR-γ Gene Expression in Human Adipose Tissue Is Associated with Weight Loss After Sleeve Gastrectomy

Get PDF
Background: The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-γ plays a key role in adipose tissue differentiation and fat metabolism. However, it is unclear which factors may regulate its expression and whether obese patients have changes in adipose tissue expression of PPAR-γor potential regulators such as miR-27. Thus, our aims were to analyze PPAR-γ and miR-27 expression in adipose tissue of obese patients, and to correlate their levels with clinical variables. Subjects and methods: We included 43 morbidly obese subjects who underwent sleeve gastrectomy (31 of them completed 1-year follow-up) and 19 non-obese subjects. mRNA expression of PPAR-γ1 and PPAR-γ2, miR-27a, and miR-27b was measured by qPCR in visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue. Clinical variables and serum adipokine and hormone levels were correlated with PPAR-γ and miR-27 expression. In addition, a systematic review of the literature regarding PPAR-γ expression in adipose tissue of obese patients was performed. Results: We found no differences in the expression of PPAR-γ and miR-27 in adipose tissue of obese patients vs. controls. The literature review revealed discrepant results regarding PPAR-γ expression in adipose tissue of obese patients. Of note, we described a significant negative correlation between pre-operative PPAR-γ1 expression in adipose tissue of obese patients and post-operative weight loss, potentially linked with insulin resistance markers. Conclusion: PPAR-γ1 expression in adipose tissue is associated with weight loss after sleeve gastrectomy and may be used as a biomarker for response to surgeryThis work was funded by the following grants to M.M.: ISCIII and FEDER, PI10/01692, PI16/01548, RD16/0017/0023, and I3SNS-INT12/049, L.H.C.: Junta de Castilla y León GRS 681/A/11, J.-L. The reproductive performance of B.taurus embryo donors is affected in many tropical and temperate countries. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the climatic conditions of summer and winter climatic conditions on the production of oocytes and in vitro embryos in dairy cows of the breed Gir Leiteiro (Bos indicus) at farms in Southeast of the Brazil. The variable answers evaluated were the total oocytes recovered (TO) and percentage of viable oocytes over the total (PVO); embryo production (EP) and percentage of embryos in viable oocytes (PE) over the total of structures recovered by follicular aspiration guided by ultrasonography (OPU). The oocytes analyzed were obtained from 10 herds and 153 pubertal donors of different ages and orders of parturition. The average from 380 ovum pick up (OPU) during summer were: TO=14.8; PVO=12.6; EP=3.4; PE=22.3%, and TO=13.4; PVO=10.8; EP=3.5; PE=26.1%, with variation coefficient of up to 84%, and no differences evaluated through the Kruscal Wallis (p<0.05). Only the percentage of viable oocytes was higher (p<0.05) in the summer period (PVO=84.4 vs. 80.0%). However, the embryo production (IVEP) was similar in both seasons (summer and winter). Therefore, we could conclude that the embryo production of Dairy Gir cows in Southeast of the Brazil was not affected by weather seasonality.
