ANTARES: Progress towards building a `Broker' of time-domain alerts
The Arizona-NOAO Temporal Analysis and Response to Events System (ANTARES) is
a joint effort of NOAO and the Department of Computer Science at the University
of Arizona to build prototype software to process alerts from time-domain
surveys, especially LSST, to identify those alerts that must be followed up
immediately. Value is added by annotating incoming alerts with existing
information from previous surveys and compilations across the electromagnetic
spectrum and from the history of past alerts. Comparison against a knowledge
repository of properties and features of known or predicted kinds of variable
phenomena is used for categorization. The architecture and algorithms being
employed are described
Absolute Magnitudes and Colors of RR Lyrae stars in DECam Passbands from Photometry of the Globular Cluster M5
We characterize the absolute magnitudes and colors of RR Lyrae stars in the
globular cluster M5 in the ugriz filter system of the Dark Energy Camera
(DECam). We provide empirical Period-Luminosity (P-L) relationships in all 5
bands based on 47 RR Lyrae stars of the type ab and 14 stars of the type c. The
P-L relationships were found to be better constrained for the fundamental mode
RR Lyrae stars in the riz passbands, with dispersion of 0.03, 0.02 and 0.02
magnitudes, respectively. The dispersion of the color at minimum light was
found to be small, supporting the use of this parameter as a means to obtain
accurate interstellar extinctions along the line of sight up to the distance of
the RR Lyrae star. We found a trend of color at minimum light with pulsational
period that, if taken into account, brings the dispersion in color at minimum
light to < 0.016 magnitudes for the (r-i), (i-z), and (r-z) colors. These
calibrations will be very useful for using RR Lyrae stars from DECam
observations as both standard candles for distance determinations and color
standards for reddening measurements.Comment: Accepted for publication in A
Sub-percent Photometry: Faint DA White Dwarf Spectophotometric Standards for Astrophysical Observatories
We have established a network of 19 faint (16.5 mag 19 mag) northern
and equatorial DA white dwarfs as spectrophotometric standards for present and
future wide-field observatories. Our analysis infers SED models for the stars
that are tied to the three CALSPEC primary standards. Our SED models are
consistent with panchromatic Hubble Space Telescope () photometry to
better than 1%. The excellent agreement between observations and models
validates the use of non-local-thermodynamic-equilibrium (NLTE) DA white dwarf
atmospheres extinguished by interstellar dust as accurate spectrophotometric
references. Our standards are accessible from both hemispheres and suitable for
ground and space-based observatories covering the ultraviolet to the near
infrared. The high-precision of these faint sources make our network of
standards ideally suited for any experiment that has very stringent
requirements on flux calibration, such as studies of dark energy using the
Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) and the Wide-Field Infrared Survey

Access to shops: The views of low-income shoppers
Concern is mounting as the retail stranglehold upon access to food grows. Research on the implications of restructuring retailing and health inequality has failed to involve low-income consumers in this debate. This paper reports on an exercise conducted for the UK Government's, Social Exclusion Unit's Policy Action Team on Access to Shops. The survey provides a useful baseline of the views of low-income groups in England. The choices that people on low income can make were found to be dominated by certain factors such as income and, most importantly, transport. Consumers reported varying levels of satisfaction with retail provision. The findings suggest gaps between what people have, what they want and what the planning process does and does not offer them. Better policy and processes are needed to include and represent the interests of low-income groups
Is perception of quality more important than technical quality in patient video cases?
Background: The use of video cases to demonstrate key signs and symptoms in patients (patient video cases or PVCs) is a rapidly expanding field. The aims of this study were to evaluate whether the technical quality, or judgement of quality, of a video clip influences a paediatrician's judgment on acuity of the case and assess the relationship between perception of quality and the technical quality of a selection of video clips. Methods: Participants (12 senior consultant paediatricians attending an examination workshop) individually categorised 28 PVCs into one of 3 possible acuities and then described the quality of the image seen. The PVCs had been converted into four different technical qualities (differing bit rates ranging from excellent to low quality). Results: Participants' assessment of quality and the actual industry standard of the PVC were independent (333 distinct observations, spearmans rho = 0.0410, p = 0.4564). Agreement between actual acuity and participants' judgement was generally good at higher acuities but moderate at medium/low acuities of illness (overall correlation 0.664). Perception of the quality of the clip was related to correct assignment of acuity regardless of the technical quality of the clip (number of obs = 330, z = 2.07, p = 0.038). Conclusions: It is important to benchmark PVCs prior to use in learning resources as experts may not agree on the information within, or quality of, the clip. It appears, although PVCs may be beneficial in a pedagogical context, the perception of quality of clip may be an important determinant of an expert's decision making. © 2015 Roland et al
How flood risk management projects can improve urban resilience:a combined assessment approach of functional resilience and adaptive capacity
Flooding poses a major challenge to urbanised areas around the world. Increasing resilience istherefore key, especially in low-lying coastal areas. To assess to what extent and why flood riskmanagement projects improve urban resilience, we developed an approach that combines anassessment of impacts on an area’s functional resilience and the adaptive capacity of citizens.Application of the approach to the Dudley Creek flood remediation project in Christchurch,New Zealand, shows that the project had a positive impact on the area’s resilience. Yet, if theproject had paid more attention to combining hard infrastructure interventions with citizenengagement, its positive impact would have been higher. This study confirms the relevance ofcombining engineering and social perspectives on urban resilience, both in assessing resilienceand in designing flood risk management projects. Practitioners are invited to use the frame-work to design projects that improve an urban area’s resilience in a holistic manner
Oral health and elite sport performance
While the research base is limited, studies have consistently reported poor oral health in elite athletes since the first report from the 1968 Olympic Games. The finding is consistent both across selected samples attending dental clinics at major competitions and more representative sampling of teams and has led to calls from the International Olympic Committee for more accurate data on oral health. Poor oral health is an important issue directly as it can cause pain, negative effects on appearance and psychosocial effects on confidence and quality of life and may have long-term consequences for treatment burden. Self-reported evidence also suggests an impact on training and performance of athletes. There are many potential challenges to the oral health of athletes including nutritional, oral dehydration, exercise-induced immune suppression, lack of awareness, negative health behaviours and lack of prioritisation. However, in theory, oral diseases are preventable by simple interventions with good evidence of efficacy. The consensus statement aims to raise awareness of the issues of oral health in elite sport and recommends strategies for prevention and health promotion in addition to future research strategies
Towards a conceptual framework demonstrating the effectiveness of audiovisual patient descriptions (patient video cases): a review of the current literature
Background: Technological advances have enabled the widespread use of video cases via web-streaming and online download as an educational medium. The use of real subjects to demonstrate acute pathology should aid the education of health care professionals. However, the methodology by which this effect may be tested is not clear.
Methods: We undertook a literature review of major databases, found relevant articles relevant to using patient video cases as educational interventions, extracted the methodologies used and assessed these methods for internal and construct validity.
Results: A review of 2532 abstracts revealed 23 studies meeting the inclusion criteria and a final review of 18 of relevance. Medical students were the most commonly studied group (10 articles) with a spread of learner satisfaction, knowledge and behaviour tested. Only two of the studies fulfilled defined criteria on achieving internal and construct validity. The heterogeneity of articles meant it was not possible to perform any meta-analysis.
Conclusions: Previous studies have not well classified which facet of training or educational outcome the study is aiming to explore and had poor internal and construct validity. Future research should aim to validate a particular outcome measure, preferably by reproducing previous work rather than adopting new methods. In particular cognitive processing enhancement, demonstrated in a number of the medical student studies, should be tested at a postgraduate level
Multi-ancestry genome-wide association study of 21,000 cases and 95,000 controls identifies new risk loci for atopic dermatitis
Genetic association studies have identified 21 loci associated with atopic dermatitis risk predominantly in populations of European ancestry. To identify further susceptibility loci for this common, complex skin disease, we performed a meta-analysis of >15 million genetic variants in 21,399 cases and 95,464 controls from populations of European, African, Japanese and Latino ancestry, followed by replication in 32,059 cases and 228,628 controls from 18 studies. We identified ten new risk loci, bringing the total number of known atopic dermatitis risk loci to 31 (with new secondary signals at four of these loci). Notably, the new loci include candidate genes with roles in the regulation of innate host defenses and T cell function, underscoring the important contribution of (auto)immune mechanisms to atopic dermatitis pathogenesis
