    Fatigue crack initiation and growth on a steel in the very high cycle regime with sea water corrosion

Smooth specimens were tested under fully reversed tension between 1E6 and 1E10 cycles in three testing conditions and environments: (i) in air, (ii) in air after precorrosion and (iii) in air under real time artificial sea water flow. The fatigue strength at greater than 108 cycles is reduced by a factor more than five compared with non-corroded specimens. Fatigue cracks initiate at corrosion pits due to pre-corrosion, if any, or pits resulting from corrosion in real time during the cyclic loading. It is shown that under sea water flow, the fatigue life in the gigacycle regime is mainly governed by the corrosion process. Furthermore, the calculation of the mode I stress intensity factor at hemispherical surface defects (pits) combined with the Paris–Hertzberg–Mc Clintock crack growth rate model shows that fatigue crack initiation regime represents most of the fatigue life.PCP France Mexique, Conacyt, Arts et MĂ©tiers ParisTech (professeur invitĂ© Paul C Paris

    Mutagenic impact on fish of runoff events in agricultural areas in south-west France

    When heavy rainfall follows herbicide application, the intense surface runoff causes stream water contamination. Aquatic organisms are then briefly exposed to a complex mixture of contaminants. The aim of the present study is to investigate the genotoxic impact of such events on fish. A model fish, the Crucian carp (Carassius carassius) was exposed in controlled conditions, for 4 days, to water sampled daily in the Save River (France). The watershed of this stream is representative of agricultural areas in southwest France. Three hydrological conditions were compared: basal flow, winter flood, and spring flood. Chemical analysis of the water samples confirmed the higher contamination of the spring flood water,mainly explained by a peak of metolachlor. Genotoxicity was evaluated by micronucleus (MN) test and comet assay in peripheral erythrocytes. A significant increase in DNA breakdowns compared to controls was detected by the comet assay for all conditions. Exposure to spring flood water resulted in the highest damage induction. Moreover, induced chromosomal damage was only detected in this condition. In addition, fish were exposed, for 4 days, to an experimental mixture of 5 herbicides representative of the spring flood water contamination. Fish exhibited moderate DNA damage induction and no significant chromosomal damage. The mutagenicity induced by field-collected water is then suspected to be the result of numerous interactions between contaminants themselves and environmental factors, stressing the use of realistic exposure conditions. The results revealed a mutagenic impact of water contamination during the spring flood, emphasizing the need to consider these transient events in water quality monitoring programs

    Lexica and terminology databases play a vital role in many NLP applications, but currently most such resources are published in application-specific formats, or with custom access interfaces, leading to the problem that much of this data is in ‘‘data silos’’ and hence difficult to access. The Semantic Web and in particular the Linked Data initiative provide effective solutions to this problem, as well as possibilities for data reuse by inter-lexicon linking, and incorporation of data categories by dereferencable URIs. The Semantic Web focuses on the use of ontologies to describe semantics on the Web, but currently there is no standard for providing complex lexical information for such ontologies and for describing the relationship between the lexicon and the ontology. We present our model, lemon, which aims to address these gap

    Base Pairing Enhances Fluorescence and Favors Cyclobutane Dimer Formation Induced upon Absorption of UVA Radiation by DNA

    [EN] The photochemical properties of the DNA duplex (dA)(20) center dot (dT)(20) are compared with those of the parent single strands. It is shown that base pairing increases the probability of absorbing UVA photons, probably due to the formation of charge-transfer states. UVA excitation induces fluorescence peaking at similar to 420 nm and decaying on the nanosecond time scale. The fluorescence quantum yield, the fluorescence lifetime, and the quantum yield for cyclobutane dimer formation increase upon base pairing. Such behavior contrasts with that of the UVC-induced processes.We thank Mrs. Si. Karpati and M.     Laser emission with excitonic gain in a ZnO planar microcavity

    The lasing operation of a ZnO planar microcavity under optical pumping is demonstrated from T=80 K to 300 K. At the laser threshold, the cavity switches from the strong coupling to the weak coupling regime. A gain-related transition, which appears while still observing polariton branches and, thus, with stable excitons, is observed below 240K. This shows that exciton scattering processes, typical of II-VI semiconductors, are involved in the gain process

    Neon and Argon optical emission lines in ionized gaseous nebulae: Implications and applications

    In this work we present a study of the strong optical collisional emission lines of Ne and Ar in an heterogeneous sample of ionized gaseous nebulae for which it is possible to derive directly the electron temperature and hence the chemical abundances of neon and argon. We calculate using a grid of photoionization models new ionization correction factors for these two elements and we study the behaviour of Ne/O and Ar/O abundance ratios with metallicity. We find a constant value for Ne/O, while there seems to be some evidence for the existence of negative radial gradients of Ar/O over the disks of some nearby spirals. We study the relation between the intensities of the emission lines of [NeIII] at 3869 \AA and [OIII] at 4959 \AA and 5007 \AA. This relation can be used in empirical calibrations and diagnostic ratios extending their applicability to bluer wavelengths and therefore to samples of objects at higher redshifts. Finally, we propose a new diagnostic using [OII], [NeIII] and Hdelta emission lines to derive metallicities for galaxies at high z.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Societ

    The impact of the nitrogen-to-oxygen ratio on ionized nebulae diagnostics based on [NII] emission lines

    We study the relation between nitrogen and oxygen abundances as a function of metallicity for a sample of emission-line objects for which a direct measurement of the metallicity has been possible. This sample is representative of the very different conditions in ionization and chemical enrichement that we can find in the Universe. We first construct the N/O vs. O/H diagram and we discuss its large dispersion at all metallicity regimes. Using the same sample and a large grid of photoionization models covering very different values of the N/O ratio, we then study the most widely used strong-line calibrators of metallicity based on [NII] emission lines, such as N2 and O3N2. We demonstrate that these parameters underestimate the metallicity at low N/O ratios and viceversa. We investigate also the effect of the N/O ratio on different diagnostic diagrams used to discriminate narrow-line AGNs from star forming regions, such as the [OIII]/Hbeta vs. [NII}]/Halpha, and we show that a large fraction of the galaxies catalogued as composite in this diagram can be, in fact, star forming galaxies with a high value of the N/O ratio. Finally, using strong-line methods sensitive to the N/O abundance ratio, like N2O2 and N2S2, we investigate the relation between this ratio and the stellar mass for the galaxies of the SDSS. We find, as in the case of the mass-metallicity relation, a correlation between these two quantities and a flattening of the relation for the most massive galaxies, which could be a consequence of the enhancement of the dispersion of N/O in the high metallicity regime.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures.     Deploying CORBA Components on a Computational Grid: General Principles and Early Experiments Using the Globus Toolkit

    The deployment of high bandwidth wide-area networks has led computational grids to offer a very powerful computing resource. In particular, this inherently distributed resource is well-suited for multiphysics applications. To face the complexity of such applications, the software component technology appears to be a very adequate programming model. However, to take advantage of the computational power of grids, component-based applications should be automatically deployed in computational grids. Based on the CORBA component specifications for the deployment of components, which seem to currently be the most complete, this paper proposes a detailed process for component deployment in computational grids. It also reports on early experiments on deploying CORBA components in a computational grid using the Globus Toolkit 2.4
