Oncogenic microRNAs characterization in clear cell renal cell carcinoma

    Get PDF
A key challenge for the improvement of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) management could derive from a deeper characterization of the biology of these neoplasms that could greatly improve the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment choice. The aim of this study was to identify specific miRNAs that are deregulated in tumor vs. normal kidney tissues and that could impact on the biology of ccRCC. To this end we selected four miRNAs (miR-21-5p, miR-210-3p, miR-185-5p and miR-221-3p) and their expression has been evaluated in a retrospective cohort of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues from 20 ccRCC patients who underwent surgical nephrectomy resection. miR-21-5p and miR-210-3p resulted the most significantly up-regulated miRNAs in this patient cohort, highlighting these onco-miRNAs as possible relevant players involved in ccRCC tumorigenesis. Thus, this study reports the identification of specific oncogenic miRNAs that are altered in ccRCC tissues and suggests that they might be useful biomarkers in ccRCC management

Experimental study of MIMO-OFDM transmissions at 94 GHz in indoor environments

    Get PDF
Millimeter wave (mm-wave) frequencies have been proposed to achieve high capacity in 5G communications. Although meaningful research on the channel characteristics has been performed in the 28, 38and 60 GHz bands ─in both indoor and short-range scenarios─,only a small number of trials (experiments) have been carried out in other mm-wave bands. The objective of this work is to study the viability and evaluate the performance of the 94 GHz frequency band for MIMO-OFDM transmission in an indoor environment. Starting from a measurement campaign, the performance of MIMO algorithms is studied in terms of throughput for four different antenna configurations. This work was supported in part by the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad MINECO, Spain under Grant TEC2016-78028-C3-2-P, and in part by the European FEDER funds

    Get PDF

Abstract. The complex archaeological site documentation benefits for a long time now from the aerial point of view and remote sensing methods. Moreover, the recent research on UAV photogrammetry platform equipment and flight planning actively contribute in this sense for a scaling improvement and cost-benefits balance. Frequently, the experiences on articulated topographic profiles in archaeological excavations require not only a multi-sensor approach but also and above all a multiscale one. According to this line, in a general time-cost ration framework, the geometric content of the generated DSMs should be complete of nadir and oblique point of view for the accurate 3D reconstruction of both upstanding buildings and excavations. In the same way, also the radiometric content closely depends on sensor payload quality and is strictly affected by excavation site condition, related to the site material and light. In this research, carried out in the impressive archaeological site of the ancient city of Hierapolis in Phrygia (Turkey) in the autumn 2019 campaign, the main goal was to evaluate and validate the overall performance of a novel UAV fix-wing ultralight platform with onboard GNSS receiver for RTK/PPK processing of cameras positioning and with the possibility of oblique images capturing. The expected contribute in terms of the acquisition, processing time, radiometric enhancement and geometry 3D reconstruction will be explored with preliminary test and outcomes, and with the results of the high-scale DSM and orthoimage generation of the complete Hierapolis site

The effect of flaxseed in breast cancer: a literature review

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers and the second most responsible for cancer mortality worldwide. In 2014, in Portugal approximately 27,200 people died of cancer, of which 1,791 were women with breast cancer. Flaxseed has been one of the most studied foods, regarding possible relations to breast cancer, though mainly in experimental studies in animals, yet in few clinical trials. It is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, α-linolenic acid, lignan, and fibers. One of the main components of flaxseed is the lignans, of which 95% are made of the predominant secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG). SDG is converted into enterolactone and enterodiol, both with antiestrogen activity and structurally similar to estrogen; they can bind to cell receptors, decreasing cell growth. Some studies have shown that the intake of omega-3 fatty acids is related to the reduction of breast cancer risk. In animal studies, α-linolenic acids have been shown to be able to suppress growth, size, and proliferation of cancer cells and also to promote breast cancer cell death. Other animal studies found that the intake of flaxseed combined with tamoxifen can reduce tumor size to a greater extent than taking tamoxifen alone. Additionally, some clinical trials showed that flaxseed can have an important role in decreasing breast cancer risk, mainly in postmenopausal women. Further studies are needed, specifically clinical trials that may demonstrate the potential benefits of flaxseed in breast cancer.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A pre- and post-test study on the knowledge of grade 6 to 9 learners on HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections

In 1981, a number of reports of death from immune system failure began to cause alarm in medical circles. The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) was identified as the cause of a condition known as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). To date, there is no cure for AIDS, and as a result it is perceived as the deadliest medical condition of the century. While intensive research remains focused on development of a vaccine, there has been a strong move toward a more preventative approach that is holistic in nature, and encompasses behavioural and social components as being of equal importance. Going hand in hand with HIV/AIDS are Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). STIs are increasing around the world and in South Africa at a remarkable rate. Like HIV/AIDS, STIs are also transmitted during sex, more specifically through body contact during sex. Research has identified adolescents as a group that is particularly vulnerable to HIV and STI infection. Life-skills programmes use experiential learning to engage learners and are particularly popular because they empower individuals to make responsible, well thought out decisions based on well developed values and beliefs. There are however, various variables and agents that impact upon the success of HIV/AIDS and STI education. It is therefore suitable to adopt a biopsychosocial approach to underlie a HIV/AIDS and STI life-skills programme. Health models, such as the AIDS Risk Reduction Model, based on this approach should take into consideration important psychological variables to cope with changes in behaviour, as well as prepatory behaviours inclined towards preventing risky behaviour. The Ubuntu Education Fund is a non-government, international organisation that offered a life skills programme in HIV/AIDS, STIs, Rape and Child Abuse to learners in Grades 6 - 9. This study focused on HIV/AIDS and STIs. The sample size was 260 learners from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Region. A quasiexperimental one group pre-and post-test design was used to determine if there was a difference between the knowledge of these learners pre- and post- the life skills programme. The results of the study indicate that there was a small increase in knowledge after the life-skills programme intervention. In some schools there was even a decrease in knowledge. This study suggests that the life-skills programme was flawed and that it needs to be reviewed. The implications of these findings are discussed with suggestions for future interventions

Background: Air pollution has been classified as a human carcinogen based largely on epidemiological studies of lung cancer. Recent research suggests that exposure to ambient air pollution increases the risk of female breast cancer especially in premenopausal women. Methods: Our objective was to determine the association between residential exposure to ambient nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and newly diagnosed cases of invasive breast cancer in a cohort of 89,247 women enrolled in the Canadian National Breast Screening Study between 1980 and 1985.
