The first IRAM/PdBI polarimetric millimeter survey of active galactic nuclei. II. Activity and properties of individual sources
We present an analysis of the linear polarization of six active galactic
nuclei - 0415+379 (3C~111), 0507+179, 0528+134 (OG+134), 0954+658, 1418+546
(OQ+530), and 1637+574 (OS+562). Our targets were monitored from 2007 to 2011
in the observatory-frame frequency range 80-253 GHz, corresponding to a
rest-frame frequency range 88-705 GHz. We find average degrees of polarization
m_L ~ 2-7%; this indicates that the polarization signals are effectively
averaged out by the emitter geometries. We see indication for fairly strong
shocks and/or complex, variable emission region geometries in our sources, with
compression factors 10 deg. An
analysis of correlations between source fluxes and polarization parameter
points out special cases: the presence of (at least) two distinct emission
regions with different levels of polarization (for 0415+379) as well as
emission from a single, predominant component (for 0507+179 and 1418+546).
Regarding the evolution of flux and polarization, we find good agreement
between observations and the signal predicted by "oblique shock in jet"
scenarios in one source (1418+546). We attempt to derive rotation measures for
all sources, leading to actual measurements for two AGN and upper limits for
three sources. We derive values of RM = -39,000 +/- 1,000 (stat) +/- 13,000
(sys) rad/m^2 and RM = 420,000 +/- 10,000 (stat) +/- 110,000 (sys) rad/m^2 for
1418+546 and 1637+574, respectively; these are the highest values reported to
date for AGN. These values indicate magnetic field strengths of the order
~0.0001 G. For 0415+379, 0507+179, and 0954+658 we derive upper limits |RM| <
17,000 rad/m^2. From the relation |RM| ~ nu^a we find a = 1.9 +/- 0.3 for
1418+546, in good agreement with a = 2 as expected for a spherical or conical

A search for linear polarization in the active galactic nucleus 3C 84 at 239 and 348 GHz
We report a search for linear polarization in the active galactic nucleus
(AGN) 3C 84 (NGC 1275) at observed frequencies of 239 GHz and 348 GHz,
corresponding to rest-frame frequencies of 243 GHz and 354 GHz. We collected
polarization data with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer via Earth
rotation polarimetry. We do not detect linear polarization. Our analysis finds
3-sigma upper limits on the degree of polarization of 0.5% and 1.9% at 239 GHz
and 348 GHz, respectively. We regard the influence of Faraday conversion as
marginal, leading to expected circular polarizations <0.3%. Assuming
depolarization by a local Faraday screen, we constrain the rotation measure, as
well as the fluctuations therein, to be 10^6 rad/m^2. From this we estimate
line-of-sight magnetic field strengths of >100 microG. Given the physical
dimensions of 3C 84 and its observed structure, the Faraday screen appears to
show prominent small-scale structure, with \DeltaRM > 10^6 rad/m^2 on projected

Sustaining the Digital Humanities in the UK
The Sustaining Digital Humanities in the UK report is timely for the UK Digital Humanities (DH) landscape. The establishment of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has created an opportune moment for the strategic planning of research infrastructure between and across all the research areas. Led by Giles Bergel and Pip Willcox, this report is based on the findings of a workshop held at the University of Oxford’s e-Research Centre (OeRC) on 21 June 2018 and sponsored by the Software Sustainability Institute. The workshop was led by an advisory board of Digital Humanities practitioners, representing a range of career stages, roles, and disciplines. The workshop’s organisers and advisory board are the joint authors of this report, with contributions from workshop participants. The mission of the Software Sustainability Institute (SSI) is to cultivate better, more sustainable, research software to enable world-class research. Currently celebrating its 10th year, the SSI has achieved broadening engagement across academic communities including humanities – for example as a longstanding supporter of the Digital Humanities at Oxford Summer School (DHOxSS), and with SSI Fellows in the arts and humanities areas. This report was commissioned by the SSI with the aim of advancing its mission within the humanities. Digital Humanities, a broad intersection of models, methods, tools, materials, career paths and affiliations, in both established and novel disciplines was identified as the area within the humanities that most closely aligns with the SSI’s role

A role for mospd1 in mesenchymal stem cell proliferation and differentiation
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated from many tissues including bone marrow and fat can be expanded in vitro and can differentiate into a range of different cell types such as bone, cartilage, and adipocytes. MSCs can also exhibit immunoregulatory properties when transplanted but, although a number of clinical trials using MSCs are in progress, the molecular mechanisms that control their production, proliferation, and differentiation are poorly understood. We identify MOSPD1 as a new player in this process. We generated MOSPD1‐null embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and demonstrate that they are deficient in their ability to differentiate into a number of cell lineages including osteoblasts, adipocytes, and hematopoietic progenitors. The self‐renewal capacity of MOSPD1‐null ESCs was normal and they exhibited no obvious defects in early germ layer specification nor in epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT), indicating that MOSPD1 functions after these key steps in the differentiation process. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)‐like cells expressing CD73, CD90, and CD105 were generated from MOSPD1‐null ESCs but their growth rate was significantly impaired implying that MOSPD1 plays a role in MSC proliferation. Phenotypic deficiencies exhibited by MOSPD1‐null ESCs were rescued by exogenous expression of MOSPD1, but not MOSPD3 indicating distinct functional properties of these closely related genes. Our in vitro studies were supported by RNA‐sequencing data that confirmed expression of Mospd1 mRNA in cultured, proliferating perivascular pre‐MSCs isolated from human tissue. This study adds to the growing body of knowledge about the function of this largely uncharacterized protein family and introduces a new player in the control of MSC proliferation and differentiation. Pre-ALMA observations of GRBs in the mm/submm range
GRBs generate an afterglow emission that can be detected from radio to X-rays
during days, or even weeks after the initial explosion. The peak of this
emission crosses the mm/submm range during the first hours to days, making
their study in this range crucial for constraining the models. Observations
have been limited until now due to the low sensitivity of the observatories in
this range. We present observations of 10 GRB afterglows obtained from APEX and
SMA, as well as the first detection of a GRB with ALMA, and put them into
context with all the observations that have been published until now in the
spectral range that will be covered by ALMA. The catalogue of mm/submm
observations collected here is the largest to date and is composed of 102 GRBs,
of which 88 had afterglow observations, whereas the rest are host galaxy
searches. With our programmes, we contributed with data of 11 GRBs and the
discovery of 2 submm counterparts. In total, the full sample, including data
from the literature, has 22 afterglow detections with redshift ranging from
0.168 to 8.2. GRBs have been detected in mm/submm wavelengths with peak
luminosities spanning 2.5 orders of magnitude, the most luminous reaching
10^33erg s^-1 Hz^-1. We observe a correlation between the X-ray brightness at
0.5 days and the mm/submm peak brightness. Finally we give a rough estimate of
the distribution of peak flux densities of GRB afterglows, based on the current
mm/submm sample. Observations in the mm/submm bands have been shown to be
crucial for our understanding of the physics of GRBs, but have until now been
limited by the sensitivity of the observatories. With the start of the
operations at ALMA, the sensitivity will be increased by more than an order of
magnitude. Our estimates predict that, once completed, ALMA will detect up to
98% of the afterglows if observed during the passage of the peak synchrotron

Relationships Between Cardiorespiratory Fitness, Physical Activity, and Psychosocial Variables in Overweight and Obese Breast Cancer Survivors

This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Background Breast cancer survivors not only experience distressing physical symptoms associated with treatments, but also are faced with psychosocial challenges. Despite growing scientific evidence that physical activity (PA) may mitigate psychosocial distress experienced by women treated for breast cancer, the literature is equivocal. Purpose This study investigated the relationships between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), PA, and psychosocial factors in breast cancer survivors. Method Data involving overweight or obese breast cancer survivors (N=260) were examined. CRF was determined by a submaximal graded exercise test. PA, depressive symptoms, total fatigue, and global self-esteem were assessed with selfreport measures. Pearson's correlations were conducted to determine associations among CRF, PA, depressive symptoms, total fatigue, and global self-esteem. Multiple regression models, with age and body mass index as covariates, were performed using continuous levels for CRF and PA. Results Bivariate correlations suggested that CRF and PA were unrelated to the psychosocial variables. One of the regression models identified a marginally significant (P=0.06) inverse association between depressive symptoms and PA. Conclusion CRF and PA were not associated with psychosocial factors in this sample of breast cancer survivors. However
State–Space Forecasting of Schistosoma haematobium Time-Series in Niono, Mali
Adequate forecasting and early warning systems are based upon observations of human behavior, population, disease time-series, climate, environment, and/or a combination thereof, whichever option best compromises among realism, feasibility, robustness, and parsimony. Fully automatic and user-friendly state–space forecasting frameworks, incorporating myriad options (e.g., expert opinion, univariate, multivariate, and spatial-temporal), could considerably enhance disease control and hazard mitigation efforts in regions where vulnerability to neglected tropical diseases is pervasive and statistical expertise is scarce. The operational simplicity, generality, and flexibility of state–space frameworks, encapsulating multiple methods, could conveniently allow for 1) unsupervised model selection without disease-specific methodological tailoring, 2) on-line adaptation to disease time-series fluctuations, and 3) automatic switches between distinct forecasting methods as new time-series perturbations dictate. In this investigation, a univariate state–space framework with the aforementioned properties was successfully applied to the Schistosoma haematobium time-series for the district of Niono, Mali, to automatically generate contemporaneous on-line forecasts and hence, providing a basis for local re-organization and strengthening public health programs in this and potentially other Sahelian districts
Black Girls Speak STEM: Counterstories of Informal and Formal Learning Experiences
This study presents the interpretations and perceptions of Black girls who participated in I AM STEM – a community-based informal science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) program. Using narrative inquiry, participants generated detailed accounts of their informal and formal STEM learning experiences. Critical race methodology informed this research to portray the dynamic and complex experiences of girls of color, whose stories have historically been silenced and misrepresented. The data sources for this qualitative study included individual interviews, student reflection journals, samples of student work, and researcher memos, which were triangulated to produce six robust counterstories. Excerpts of the counterstories are presented in this article. The major findings of this research revealed that I AM STEM ignited an interest in STEM learning through field trips and direct engagement in scientific phenomena that allowed the girls to become agentic in continuing their engagement in STEM activities throughout the year. This call to awaken the voices of Black girls to speak casts light on their experiences and challenges as STEM learners ⎯ from their perspectives. The findings confirm that when credence and counterspaces are given to Black girls, they are poised to reveal their luster toward STEM learning. This study provided a space for Black girls to reflect on their STEM learning experiences, formulate new understandings, and make connections between the informal and formal learning environments within the context of their everyday lives, thus offering a more holistic approach to STEM learning that occurs across settings and over a lifetime
Migration Costs and Networks: household optimal investment in migration
International migration is an expensive form of investment, that only households relatively better off can afford. However poorer households have the higher incentive to migrate. Migration decision is conditional on the entry cost, expected returns and risks of migration. This paper, using data from Mexican rural and urban areas, examines the relation between household and community networks and costs and risks of migration focusing on the optimal investment in migration. To investigate an household optimal number of migrants this paper introduces a Three Step procedure to solve simultaneously for the endogeneity of network size and possible selection of migrants. The analysis confirms the inverted U-shaped relation between wealth and migration, stressing the importance of networks particularly in facilitating the migration of social strata belonging to the left tail of the income distribution. Moreover, in presence of sunk costs and/or high initial investment, household and community networks accomplish different functions
