    THE EFFECT OF OSTEOPOROSIS HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAM BASED ON HEALTH BELIEF MODEL ON KNOWLEDGE AND HEALTH BELIEFS TOWARDS OSTEOPOROSIS AMONG JORDANIAN FEMALE TEACHERS

    This study was conducted to assess the effect of osteoporosis health education program based on Health Belief Model on knowledge and health beliefs towards osteoporosis among Jordanian female teachers. This experimental study was performed on 200 female teachers (100 teachers in the intervention group and 100 in the control group) aged 25 - 49 years old in four governmental secondary schools affiliated to public educational directorate in Amman governorate. The females participated in a four-week educational program based on the Health Belief Model. The data collection instrument was a validated and reliable questionnaire in three sections: demographics, knowledge and health beliefs. The questionnaires on osteoporosis knowledge and health beliefs were given to the participants before the program (pre-intervention) and repeated three months later after the intervention on the same participants (post-intervention). The health education program prepared according to pre-intervention results. The results revealed that the mean scores of teachers’ knowledge and health beliefs subscales among the intervention group were significantly changed before and after the educational intervention program (P < 0.05). The use of an osteoporosis educational program seems to improve knowledge and health beliefs. In addition, it could support the need to raising the awareness and knowledge of osteoporosis

    Hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moments of leptons from first principles

    We compute the leading, strong-interaction contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron, muon and tau using lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) simulations. Calculations include the effects of uu, dd, ss and cc quarks and are performed directly at the physical values of the quark masses and in volumes of linear extent larger than 6 fm6\,\mathrm{fm}. All connected and disconnected Wick contractions are calculated. Continuum limits are carried out using six lattice spacings. We obtain aeLO−HVP=189.3(2.6)(5.6)×10−14a_e^\mathrm{LO-HVP}=189.3(2.6)(5.6)\times 10^{-14}, aÎŒLO−HVP=711.1(7.5)(17.4)×10−10a_\mu^\mathrm{LO-HVP}=711.1(7.5)(17.4)\times 10^{-10} and aτLO−HVP=341.0(0.8)(3.2)×10−8a_\tau^\mathrm{LO-HVP}=341.0(0.8)(3.2)\times 10^{-8}, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures (in 13 PDF files), RevTeX 4.1.     Surface Production Fuels Deep Heterotrophic Respiration in Northern Peatlands

    Multiple analyses of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from pore waters were conducted to define the processes that govern carbon balance in peatlands: (1) source, reactivity, and transport of DOC with respect to vegetation, peat, and age of carbon substrate, (2) reactivity of DOC with respect to molecular size, and (3) lability to photoxidation of surficial DOC. We found that surface organic production fuels heterotrophic respiration at depth in advection-dominated peatlands, especially in fens. Fen DOC was Δ14Cenriched relative to the surrounding fen peat, and fen respiration products were similar to this enriched DOC indicating that DOC was the main microbial substrate. Bog DOC was more variable showing either enrichment in Δ14C at depth or Δ14C values that follow peat values. This variability in bogs is probably controlled by the relative importance of vertical transport of labile carbon substrates within the peat profile versus DOC production from bog peat. These results extended our set of observations to 10 years at one bog-fen pair and add two additional bog-fen pairs to our series of observations. Anaerobic incubations of peat, rinsed free of residual DOC, produced DOC and respiration products that were strikingly similar to the peat values in a bog and two fens. This result demonstrated conclusively that downward advection is the process responsible for the presence of modern DOC found at depth in the peat column. Fen DOC has lower C/N values and up to twice as much LMW (kDa) DOC as bogs due to differences in organic inputs and greater microbial processing. Fluorescence irradiation experiments showed that fen DOC is more photolabile than bog DOC

    Microwave observations of spinning dust emission in NGC6946

    We report new cm-wave measurements at five frequencies between 15 and 18GHz of the continuum emission from the reportedly anomalous "region 4" of the nearby galaxy NGC6946. We find that the emission in this frequency range is significantly in excess of that measured at 8.5GHz, but has a spectrum from 15-18GHz consistent with optically thin free-free emission from a compact HII region. In combination with previously published data we fit four emission models containing different continuum components using the Bayesian spectrum analysis package radiospec. These fits show that, in combination with data at other frequencies, a model with a spinning dust component is slightly preferred to those that possess better-established emission mechanisms.Comment: submitted MNRA

    High resolution AMI Large Array imaging of spinning dust sources: spatially correlated 8 micron emission and evidence of a stellar wind in L675

    We present 25 arcsecond resolution radio images of five Lynds Dark Nebulae (L675, L944, L1103, L1111 & L1246) at 16 GHz made with the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI) Large Array. These objects were previously observed with the AMI Small Array to have an excess of emission at microwave frequencies relative to lower frequency radio data. In L675 we find a flat spectrum compact radio counterpart to the 850 micron emission seen with SCUBA and suggest that it is cm-wave emission from a previously unknown deeply embedded young protostar. In the case of L1246 the cm-wave emission is spatially correlated with 8 micron emission seen with Spitzer. Since the MIR emission is present only in Spitzer band 4 we suggest that it arises from a population of PAH molecules, which also give rise to the cm-wave emission through spinning dust emission.Comment: accepted MNRA

    Evidence that links loss of cyclooxygenase-2 with increased asymmetric dimethylarginine : novel explanation of cardiovascular side effects associated with anti-inflammatory drugs

Cyclooxygenase-2 is expressed in the renal medulla where inhibition causes fluid retention and increased blood pressure. However, the mechanisms linking cyclooxygenase-2 inhibition and cardiovascular events are unknown and no biomarkers have been identified.METHODS AND RESULTS: Transcriptome analysis of wild-type and cyclooxygenase-2(-/-) mouse tissues revealed 1 gene altered in the heart and aorta, but >1000 genes altered in the renal medulla, including those regulating the endogenous nitric oxide synthase inhibitors asymmetrical dimethylarginine (ADMA) and monomethyl-l-arginine. Cyclo-oxygenase-2(-/-) mice had increased plasma levels of ADMA and monomethyl-l-arginine and reduced endothelial nitric oxide responses. These genes and methylarginines were not similarly altered in mice lacking prostacyclin receptors. Wild-type mice or human volunteers taking cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors also showed increased plasma ADMA. Endothelial nitric oxide is cardio-protective, reducing thrombosis and atherosclerosis. Consequently, increased ADMA is associated with cardiovascular disease. Thus, our study identifies ADMA as a biomarker and mechanistic bridge between renal cyclooxygenase-2 inhibition and systemic vascular dysfunction with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug usage.CONCLUSIONS: We identify the endogenous endothelial nitric oxide synthase inhibitor ADMA as a biomarker and mechanistic bridge between renal cyclooxygenase-2 inhibition and systemic vascular dysfunction.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

    Interactions between Magnetic Nanowires and Living Cells : Uptake, Toxicity and Degradation

    We report on the uptake, toxicity and degradation of magnetic nanowires by NIH/3T3 mouse fibroblasts. Magnetic nanowires of diameters 200 nm and lengths comprised between 1 {\mu}m and 40 {\mu}m are fabricated by controlled assembly of iron oxide ({\gamma}-Fe2O3) nanoparticles. Using optical and electron microscopy, we show that after 24 h incubation the wires are internalized by the cells and located either in membrane-bound compartments or dispersed in the cytosol. Using fluorescence microscopy, the membrane-bound compartments were identified as late endosomal/lysosomal endosomes labeled with lysosomal associated membrane protein (Lamp1). Toxicity assays evaluating the mitochondrial activity, cell proliferation and production of reactive oxygen species show that the wires do not display acute short-term (< 100 h) toxicity towards the cells. Interestingly, the cells are able to degrade the wires and to transform them into smaller aggregates, even in short time periods (days). This degradation is likely to occur as a consequence of the internal structure of the wires, which is that of a non-covalently bound aggregate. We anticipate that this degradation should prevent long-term asbestos-like toxicity effects related to high aspect ratio morphologies and that these wires represent a promising class of nanomaterials for cell manipulation and microrheology.Comment: 21 pages 12 figure

    Bayesian analysis of weak gravitational lensing and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich data for six galaxy clusters

    We present an analysis of observations made with the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI) and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) of six galaxy clusters in a redshift range of 0.16--0.41. The cluster gas is modelled using the Sunyaev--Zel'dovich (SZ) data provided by AMI, while the total mass is modelled using the lensing data from the CFHT. In this paper, we: i) find very good agreement between SZ measurements (assuming large-scale virialisation and a gas-fraction prior) and lensing measurements of the total cluster masses out to r_200; ii) perform the first multiple-component weak-lensing analysis of A115; iii) confirm the unusual separation between the gas and mass components in A1914; iv) jointly analyse the SZ and lensing data for the relaxed cluster A611, confirming our use of a simulation-derived mass-temperature relation for parameterizing measurements of the SZ effect.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, 12 tables, published by MNRA
