    The Extending of Observing Altitudes of Plasma and Ion Lines During Ionospheric Heating

The ultrahigh-frequency observation during an ionospheric heating experiment on 11 March 2014 at the European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association Tromsø site illustrated a remarkable extension of observing altitudes of the enhanced plasma line and the ion line, implying that the enhanced ion acoustic wave and Langmuir wave should satisfy the Bragg condition within the extending altitude range. An analysis shows that the dependence of the wave number of the traveling ion acoustic wave on the profiles of enhanced electron temperature and ion mass, as are expected from the dispersion relation of the ion acoustic wave, leads to the extension of observing altitudes of the enhanced ion line. In addition, the altitude extension of the enhanced plasma line is dependent mainly on the profile of the electron density, although it is not independent of the profile of the electron temperature. Considering a small gradient profile of electron density, however, the enhanced electron temperature, as well as the thermal conduction along the magnetic field, may lead to the altitude extension of the enhanced plasma line

    Investigation of Ni/SiO2 catalysts prepared at different conditions for hydrogen production from ethanol steam reforming

    Ni/SiO2 catalysts prepared by a sol–gel method have been investigated for hydrogen production via steam reforming of ethanol using a continuous flow, fixed bed reactor system. Chemical equilibrium calculations were also performed to determine the effects of temperature and molar steam to carbon ratio on hydrogen production. The acidity of the preparation solution (modified by nitric acid and ammonia) and calcination atmosphere (air and N2) were investigated in the preparation of the catalysts. BET surface area and porosity, temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterise the prepared catalysts. The BET surface area was reduced when the solution acidity was lowered during the sol–gel preparation process. A pH value less than 2.0 was necessary to achieve high metal dispersion in the catalyst. Smaller NiO particles were obtained when the catalyst was calcined in N2. Material balances on ethanol steam reforming at 600 °C using the prepared Ni/SiO2 catalysts were determined, and higher hydrogen production with lower coke deposition on the reacted catalysts were also obtained from the catalysts calcined in N2 atmosphere

    Gene Expression in Chicken Reveals Correlation with Structural Genomic Features and Conserved Patterns of Transcription in the Terrestrial Vertebrates

    Background - The chicken is an important agricultural and avian-model species. A survey of gene expression in a range of different tissues will provide a benchmark for understanding expression levels under normal physiological conditions in birds. With expression data for birds being very scant, this benchmark is of particular interest for comparative expression analysis among various terrestrial vertebrates. Methodology/Principal Findings - We carried out a gene expression survey in eight major chicken tissues using whole genome microarrays. A global picture of gene expression is presented for the eight tissues, and tissue specific as well as common gene expression were identified. A Gene Ontology (GO) term enrichment analysis showed that tissue-specific genes are enriched with GO terms reflecting the physiological functions of the specific tissue, and housekeeping genes are enriched with GO terms related to essential biological functions. Comparisons of structural genomic features between tissue-specific genes and housekeeping genes show that housekeeping genes are more compact. Specifically, coding sequence and particularly introns are shorter than genes that display more variation in expression between tissues, and in addition intergenic space was also shorter. Meanwhile, housekeeping genes are more likely to co-localize with other abundantly or highly expressed genes on the same chromosomal regions. Furthermore, comparisons of gene expression in a panel of five common tissues between birds, mammals and amphibians showed that the expression patterns across tissues are highly similar for orthologuous genes compared to random gene pairs within each pair-wise comparison, indicating a high degree of functional conservation in gene expression among terrestrial vertebrates. Conclusions - The housekeeping genes identified in this study have shorter gene length, shorter coding sequence length, shorter introns, and shorter intergenic regions, there seems to be selection pressure on economy in genes with a wide tissue distribution, i.e. these genes are more compact.     Design and preparation of a novel colon-targeted tablet of hydrocortisone

    ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to design a new colon-targeted drug delivery system based on chitosan. The properties of the films were studied to obtain useful information about the possible applications of composite films. The composite films were used in a bilayer system to investigate their feasibility as coating materials. Tensile strength, swelling degree, solubility, biodegradation degree, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) investigations showed that the composite film was formed when chitosan and gelatin were reacted jointly. The results showed that a 6:4 blend ratio was the optimal chitosan/gelatin blend ratio. In vitro drug release results indicated that the Eudragit- and chitosan/gelatin-bilayer coating system prevented drug release in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF) and simulated gastric fluid (SGF). However, the drug release from a bilayer-coated tablet in SCF increased over time, and the drug was almost completely released after 24h.     Entropy analysis on convective film flow of power-law fluid with nanoparticles along an inclined plate

    Entropy generation in a two-dimensional steady laminar thin film convection flow of a non-Newtonian nanofluid (Ostwald-de-Waele-type power-law fluid with embedded nanoparticles) along an inclined plate is examined theoretically. A revised Buongiorno model is adopted for nanoscale effects, which includes the effects of the Brownian motion and thermophoresis. The nanofluid particle fraction on the boundary is passively rather than actively controlled. A convective boundary condition is employed. The local nonsimilarity method is used to solve the dimensionless nonlinear system of governing equations. Validation with earlier published results is included. A decrease in entropy generation is induced due to fluid friction associated with an increasing value of the rheological power-law index. The Brownian motion of nanoparticles enhances thermal convection via the enhanced transport of heat in microconvection surrounding individual nanoparticles. A higher convective parameter implies more intense convective heating of the plate, which increases the temperature gradient. An increase in the thermophoresis parameter decreases the nanoparticle volume fraction near the wall and increases it further from the wall. Entropy generation is also reduced with enhancement of the thermophoresis effect throughout the boundary layer

    Thermogravimetric kinetics of crude glycerol.

    The pyrolysis of the crude glycerol from a biodiesel production plant was investigated by thermogravimetry coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The main gaseous products are discussed, and the thermogravimetric kinetics derived. There were four distinct phases in the pyrolysis process of the crude glycerol. The presence of water and methanol in the crude glycerol and responsible for the first decomposition phase, were shown to catalyse glycerol decomposition (second phase). Unlike the pure compound, crude glycerol decomposition below 500 K leaves behind a large mass fraction of pyrolysis residues (ca. 15%), which eventually partially eliminate in two phases upon reaching significantly higher temperatures (700 and 970 K, respectively). An improved iterative Coats-Redfern method was used to evaluate non-isothermal kinetic parameters in each phase. The latter were then utilised to model the decomposition behaviour in non-isothermal conditions. The power law model (first order) predicted accurately the main (second) and third phases in the pyrolysis of the crude glycerol. Differences of 10-30 kJ/mol in activation energies between crude and pure glycerol in their main decomposition phase corroborated the catalytic effect of water and methanol in the crude pyrolysis. The 3-D diffusion model more accurately reproduced the fourth (last) phase, whereas the short initial decomposition phase was poorly simulated despite correlation coefficients ca. 0.95-0.96. The kinetics of the 3rd and 4th decomposition phases, attributed to fatty acid methyl esters cracking and pyrolysis tarry residues, were sensitive to the heating rate

    Assessment of Ecosystem Service Value of the Liaohe Estuarine Wetland

    The functions and services of wetland ecosystems to human society have been generally recognized. Currently, most evaluations of wetlands are a comprehensive evaluation of their ultimate value. It is rare to discuss for energy and matter lost and transferred. In this study, emergy theory was used to assess the ultimate and intermediate service values of the Liaohe estuarine wetland ecosystem. Results show that its ultimate service value was 28.2million,anditsintermediateservicevaluewas28.2 million, and its intermediate service value was 35,614.03 million. The 1263 time difference between intermediate and ultimate value shows that much server value was dissipated in the form of energy. In the ultimate service value, the value of adjusting the atmosphere was 8.02million,accountingfor28.458.02 million, accounting for 28.45% of the total value, and flood diversion and storage value was 6.98 million, accounting for 24.75%. These results illustrate that the most important service value of the Liaohe estuarine wetland ecosystem is to adjust the atmosphere and divert and store floods. In intermediate service value, maintaining-biodiversity value was $34,182 million, accounting for 95.98% of total value, showing that the Liaohe estuarine wetland plays an important role in species resources and regional seed banks

    The behavior of electron density and temperature during ionospheric heating near the fifth electron gyrofrequency

    The experimental phenomena involving the changes in electron temperature and electron density as a function of pump frequency during an ionospheric heating campaign at European Incoherent Scatter near Tromsø, Norway, are reported. When the pump frequency is slightly above the fifth electron gyrofrequency, the UHF radar observation shows some apparent enhancements over a wide altitude range in radar echo, ion line, and electron density respectively, which are apparently altitude independent and consistent temporally with the upshifting and spread of plasma line around the reflection altitude. However, they do not, in fact, correspond to true increase in electron density. Based on some existing theories, some discussions are presented to try to explain the above enhancements and the upshifting and spread of plasma line. Even so, the mechanism remains to be determined. In addition, the observation also shows some enhancements in electron temperature as a function of pump frequency around the reflection altitude of the pump, which are dependent on the behavior of dispersion of the upper hybrid wave near the fifth electron gyrofrequency
