A new look at NICMOS transmission spectroscopy of HD189733, GJ-436 and XO-1: no conclusive evidence for molecular features
We present a re-analysis of archival HST/NICMOS transmission spectroscopy of
three exoplanet systems; HD 189733, GJ-436 and XO-1. Detections of several
molecules, including H20, CH4 and CO2, have been claimed for HD 189733 and
XO-1, but similarly sized features are attributed to systematic noise for
GJ-436. The data consist of time-series grism spectra covering a planetary
transit. After extracting light curves in independent wavelength channels, we
use a linear decorrelation technique account for instrumental systematics
(which is becoming standard in the field), and measure the planet-to-star
radius ratio as a function of wavelength. For HD 189733, the uncertainties in
the transmission spectrum are significantly larger than those previously
reported. We also find the transmission spectrum is considerably altered when
using different out-of-transit orbits to remove the systematics, when some
parameters are left out of the decorrelation procedure, or when we perform the
decorrelation with quadratic functions rather than linear functions. Given that
there is no physical reason to believe the baseline flux should be modelled as
a linear function of any particular set of parameters, we interpret this as
evidence that the linear decorrelation technique is not a robust method to
remove systematic effects from the light curves for each wavelength channel.
For XO-1, the parameters measured to decorrelate the light curves would require
extrapolation to the in-transit orbit to remove the systematics, and we cannot
reproduce the previously reported results. We conclude that the resulting
NICMOS transmission spectra are too dependent on the method used to remove
systematics to be considered robust detections of molecular species in
planetary atmospheres, although the presence of these molecules is not ruled

Renal failure and the requirements for maintenance hemodialysis in Malta
In order to estimate the demands for prolonged management of chronic failure by maintenance hemodialysis, one has to consider the number of patients in the community who are likely to benefit from such treatment. Malta, with its small size and a stable population of just under 300,000, is eminently suited for a survey of the incidence of disease in a community. The purpose of the present study is to find the incidence of renal failure in Malta as well as to assess the number of patients who would be suitable for treatment by long term hemodialysis. St. Luke's Hospital is the only general hospital in Malta and uremic patients are at one time or other during their illness investigated in this hospital. For the purpose of this study, renal failure was defined as a blood urea value of 100 mg per 100 ml or more (Branch et al, 1971). All patients, who during some stage of their stay in hospital had a blood urea level of 100 mg per 100 ml or more, were studied.peer-reviewe
Visualization of hydrogen injection in a scramjet engine by simultaneous PLIF imaging and laser holographic imaging
Flowfield characterization has been accomplished for several fuel injector configurations using simultaneous planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) and laser holographic imaging (LHI). The experiments were carried out in the GASL-NASA HYPULSE real gas expansion tube facility, a pulsed facility with steady test times of about 350 microsec. The tests were done at simulated Mach numbers 13.5 and 17. The focus of this paper is on the measurement technologies used and their application in a research facility. The HYPULSE facility, the models used for the experiments, and the setup for the LHI and PLIF measurements are described. Measurement challenges and solutions are discussed. Results are presented for experiments with several fuel injector configurations and several equivalence ratios

Gluino Air Showers as a Signal of Split Supersymmetry
It has been proposed recently that, within the framework of split
Supersymmetry, long lived gluinos generated in astrophysical sources could be
detected using the signatures of the air showers they produce, thus providing a
lower bound for their lifetime and for the scale of SUSY breaking. We present
the longitudinal profile and lateral spread of -hadron induced extensive air
showers and consider the possibility of measuring them with a detector with the

A prospective longitudinal study of perceived infant outcomes at 18-24 months: Neural and psychological correlates of parental thoughts and actions assessed during the first month postpartum
The first postpartum months constitute a critical period for parents to establish an emotional bond with their infants. Neural responses to infant-related stimuli have been associated with parental sensitivity. However, the associations among these neural responses, parenting, and later infant outcomes for mothers and fathers are unknown. In the current longitudinal study, we investigated the relationships between parental thoughts/actions and neural activation in mothers and fathers in the neonatal period with infant outcomes at the toddler stage. At the first month postpartum, mothers (n=21) and fathers (n=19) underwent a neuroimaging session during which they listened to their own and unfamiliar baby’s cry. Parenting-related thoughts/behaviors were assessed by interview twice at the first month and 3-4 months postpartum and infants’ socioemotional outcomes were reported by mothers and fathers at 18-24 months postpartum. In mothers, higher levels of anxious thoughts/actions about parenting at the first month postpartum, but not at 3-4 months postpartum, were associated with infant’s low socioemotional competencies at 18-24 months. Anxious thoughts/actions were also associated with heightened responses in the motor cortex and reduced responses in the substantia nigra to own infant cry sounds. On the other hand, in fathers, higher levels of positive perception of being a parent at the first month postpartum, but not at 3-4 months postpartum, were associated with higher infant socioemotional competencies at 18-24 months. Positive thoughts were associated with heightened responses in the auditory cortex and caudate to own infant cry sounds. The current study provides evidence that parental thoughts are related to concurrent neural responses to their infants at the first month postpartum as well as their infant’s future socioemotional outcome at 18-24 months. Parent differences suggest that anxious thoughts in mothers and positive thoughts in fathers may be the targets for parenting-focused interventions very early postpartum
Primary and secondary eclipse spectroscopy with JWST: exploring the exoplanet parameter space
Eclipse exoplanet spectroscopy has yielded detection of H_2O, CH_4, CO_2 and
CO in the atmosphere of hot jupiters and neptunes. About 40 large terrestrial
planets are announced or confirmed, two of which are transiting, and another
deemed habitable. Hence the potential for eclipse spectroscopy of terrestrial
planets with James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has become an active field of
study. We explore the parameter space (type of stars, planet orbital periods
and types, and instruments/wavelengths) in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio
(S/N) achievable on the detection of spectroscopic features. We use analytic
formula and model data for both the astrophysical scene and the instrument, to
plot S/N contour maps, while indicating how the S/N scales with the fixed
parameters. We systematically compare stellar photon noise-only figures with
ones including detailed instrumental and zodiacal noises. Likelihood of
occurring targets is based both on model and catalog star population of the
solar neighborhood. The 9.6 micron ozone band is detectable (S/N = 3) with
JWST, for a warm super-earth 6.7 pc away, using ~2% of the 5-year nominal
mission time (summing observations, M4V and lighter host star for primary
eclipses, M5V for secondary). If every star up to this mass limit and distance
were to host a habitable planet, there should be statistically ~1 eclipsing
case. Investigation of systematic noises in the co-addition of 5 years worth-,
tens of days separated-, hours-long observations is critical, complemented by
dedicated characterisation of the instruments, currently in integration phase.
The census of nearby transiting habitable planets must be complete before the

An effective elastic thickness map of Australia from wavelet transforms of gravity and topography using Forsyth's method
We have developed a wavelet version of Forsyth's coherence method for estimating the effective elasticthickness (T e) of the lithosphere from gravity and topography. We have previously shown that the 'fan' wavelet is particularly well suited to making localised coherence estimates and here we progress the method by showing how the coherence can be modelled by using the wavelet transforms of gravity and topography to infer the initial loads that flex the plate. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated on synthetic data from a model having a rectangular area of large T e embedded in a uniform low T e surrounding, and a load ratio that increases with wave number. The results for the Australia region show a 'core' of high T e under north and central Australia, with much lower values to the east and also, unexpectedly, under the western parts of the Yilgarn and Pilbara cratons
