Efficient ortho-formylation in vitamin E series, application to the semi-synthesis of natural 5- and 7-formyl-δ-tocotrienols revealing an unprecedented 5-bromo-7-formyl exchange

    Get PDF
Semi-synthesis of 5- and 7-formyltocopherols and tocotrienols has been developed by ortho-formylation of C-5 or C-7-unsubstituted vitamin E derivatives (14 examples) up to 90% yield, through heating in the presence of respectively 10-10-15 equivalents of MgCl2-Et3N-(CH2O)n. Formylation of 5-bromo-δ-tocotrienol revealed an unprecedented 5-bromo/7-formyl exchange and yielded 7-bromo-5-formyl-δ-tocotrienol as major product. The minor 5-bromo-7-formyl-δ-tocotrienol led in three steps to 7-formyl-δ-tocotrienol previously isolated from the stem bark of Garcinia virgata

Semisynthetic and Natural Garcinoic Acid Isoforms as New mPGES-1 Inhibitors

    Get PDF
Over the last twenty years, tocotrienol analogues raised great interest because of their higher level and larger domain of biological activities when compared with tocopherols. Amongst the most promising therapeutic application, anti-inflammatory potency has been evaluated through the inhibition of various mediators of inflammation. Here, we worked on the isolation of two natural isoforms of garcinoic acid (i.e., δ and γ) from two different sources, respectively, Garcinia kola seeds and Garcinia amplexicaulis bark. We also developed semisynthetic strategies to access the other two non-natural α- and β-garcinoic acid isoforms. In the next stage of our work, microsomal prostaglandin E2 synthase was defined as a target to evaluate the anti-inflammatory potential of the four garcinoic acid isomers. Both dimethylated isoforms, β- and γ-garcinoic acid, exhibited the lowest IC50, 2.8 µM and 2.0 µM, respectively. These results showed that the affinity of tocotrienol analogues to microsomal prostaglandin E2 synthase-1 most probably contributes to the anti-inflammatory potential of this class of derivatives

Opportunities and challenges in sustainable treatment and resource reuse of sewage sludge: A review

    Get PDF
Sludge or waste activated sludge (WAS) generated from wastewater treatment plants may be considered a nuisance. It is a key source for secondary environmental contamination on account of the presence of diverse pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, dioxins, furans, heavy metals, etc.). Innovative and cost-effective sludge treatment pathways are a prerequisite for the safe and environment-friendly disposal of WAS. This article delivers an assessment of the leading disposal (volume reduction) and energy recovery routes such as anaerobic digestion, incineration, pyrolysis, gasification and enhanced digestion using microbial fuel cell along with their comparative evaluation, to measure their suitability for different sludge compositions and resources availability. Furthermore, the authors shed light on the bio-refinery and resource recovery approaches to extract value added products and nutrients from WAS, and control options for metal elements and micro-pollutants in sewage sludge. Recovery of enzymes, bio-plastics, bio-pesticides, proteins and phosphorus are discussed as a means to visualize sludge as a potential opportunity instead of a nuisance

This work deals with gas phase toluene alkylation with propene on MCM-22 zeolite (MWW) which contains three independant pore systems: large supercages, bidimensional sinusoidal channels and large external cups; its aim is to determine the catalytic role of these pore systems in toluene-propene transformation. Collidine poisoning confirms that alkylation only occurs within the external hemicages and without deactivation. C4-C6 alkene production through propene oligomerization-cracking which decreases rapidly with increasing time was demonstrated to occur essentially within the sinusoidal channels whereas mainly non desorbed products would be formed within the supercages. MCM-22 zeolite with Si/Al = 17 was found to be more active and selective to cymenes than ITQ-2 (prepared by swelling and delaminating the same precursor of MCM-22) and HBEA zeolites.POITIERS-BU Sciences (861942102) / SudocSudocFranceF
