The PHENIX Experiment at RHIC
The physics emphases of the PHENIX collaboration and the design and current
status of the PHENIX detector are discussed. The plan of the collaboration for
making the most effective use of the available luminosity in the first years of

The Nucleon's Virtual Meson Cloud and Deep Inelastic Lepton Scattering
We address the question whether the nucleon's antiquark sea can be attributed
entirely to its virtual meson cloud and, in essence, whether there exists a
smooth transition between hadronic and quark-gluon degrees of freedom. We take
into account contributions from and mesons and compare with the
nucleon's antiquark distributions which serve as a non-perturbative input to
the QCD evolution equations. We elucidate the different behavior in the flavor
singlet and non-singlet channels and study the dependence of our results on the
scale . The meson-nucleon cut-offs that we determine give not only an
indication on the size of the region within which quarks are confined in a
nucleon, but we find that the scale of these form factors is closely related to
the four-momentum transfer, , where gluons are resolved by a high energy
probe, and that large meson loop momenta, GeV,
contribute significantly to the sea quark distributions. While the agreement of
our calculations with data-based parametrizations is satisfactory and scale
independent for the flavor breaking share of the nucleon's antiquark sea, the
flavor singlet component is quite poorly described. This hints the importance

Gluons and the quark sea at high energies: distributions, polarization, tomography
This report is based on a ten-week program on "Gluons and the quark sea at
high-energies", which took place at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle
in Fall 2010. The principal aim of the program was to develop and sharpen the
science case for an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a facility that will be able
to collide electrons and positrons with polarized protons and with light to
heavy nuclei at high energies, offering unprecedented possibilities for
in-depth studies of quantum chromodynamics. This report is organized around
four major themes: i) the spin and flavor structure of the proton, ii)
three-dimensional structure of nucleons and nuclei in momentum and
configuration space, iii) QCD matter in nuclei, and iv) Electroweak physics and
the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. Beginning with an executive
summary, the report contains tables of key measurements, chapter overviews for
each of the major scientific themes, and detailed individual contributions on

Model-independent measurement of -channel single top quark production in collisions at TeV
We present a model-independent measurement of -channel electroweak
production of single top quarks in \ppbar collisions at . Using of integrated luminosity collected by the D0
detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, and selecting events containing an
isolated electron or muon, missing transverse energy and one or two jets
originating from the fragmentation of quarks, we measure a cross section
\sigma({\ppbar}{\rargap}tqb+X) = 2.90 \pm 0.59\;\rm (stat+syst)\; pb for a
top quark mass of . The probability of the background to
fluctuate and produce a signal as large as the one observed is
, corresponding to a significance of 5.5 standard deviations.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett.
Search for anomalous Wtb couplings in single top quark production in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
We present new direct constraints on a general interaction using data
corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb collected by the D0
detector at the Tevatron collider. The standard model provides a
purely left-handed vector coupling at the vertex, while the most general,
lowest dimension Lagrangian allows right-handed vector and left- or
right-handed tensor couplings as well. We obtain precise limits on these
anomalous couplings by comparing the data to the expectations from different
assumptions on the coupling.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Lett.
Search for W'->tb resonances with left- and right-handed couplings to fermions
We present a search for the production of a heavy gauge boson, W', that
decays to third-generation quarks, by the D0 Collaboration in ppbar collisions
at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV. We set 95% confidence level upper limits on the
production cross section times branching fraction. For the first time, we set
limits for arbitrary combinations of left- and right-handed couplings of the W'
boson to fermions. For couplings with the same strength as the standard model W
boson, we set the following limits for M(W') > m(nu_R): M(W')>863 GeV for
purely left-handed couplings, M(W')>885 GeV for purely right-handed couplings,
and M(W')>916 GeV if both left- and right-handed couplings are present. The
limit for right-handed couplings improves for M(W') 890 GeV.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Physics Letters
Search for single top quark production in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV
We present a search for electroweak production of single top quarks in the
s-channel and t-channel using neural networks for signal-background separation.
We have analyzed 230 pb of data collected with the D0 detector at the
Fermilab Tevatron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV and find no
evidence for a single top quark signal. The resulting 95% confidence level
upper limits on the single top quark production cross sections are 6.4 pb in
the s-channel and 5.0 pb in the t-channel.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
Role of the repeat expansion size in predicting age of onset and severity in RFC1 disease
RFC1 disease, caused by biallelic repeat expansion in RFC1, is clinically heterogeneous in terms of age of onset, disease progression and phenotype. We investigated the role of the repeat size in influencing clinical variables in RFC1 disease. We also assessed the presence and role of meiotic and somatic instability of the repeat.
In this study, we identified 553 patients carrying biallelic RFC1 expansions and measured the repeat expansion size in 392 cases. Pearsonâs coefficient was calculated to assess the correlation between the repeat size and age at disease onset. A Cox model with robust cluster standard errors was adopted to describe the effect of repeat size on age at disease onset, on age at onset of each individual symptoms, and on disease progression. A quasi-Poisson regression model was used to analyse the relationship between phenotype and repeat size. We performed multivariate linear regression to assess the association of the repeat size with the degree of cerebellar atrophy. Meiotic stability was assessed by Southern blotting on first-degree relatives of 27 probands. Finally, somatic instability was investigated by optical genome mapping on cerebellar and frontal cortex and unaffected peripheral tissue from four post-mortem cases.
A larger repeat size of both smaller and larger allele was associated with an earlier age at neurological onset [smaller allele hazard ratio (HR) = 2.06, P < 0.001; larger allele HR = 1.53, P < 0.001] and with a higher hazard of developing disabling symptoms, such as dysarthria or dysphagia (smaller allele HR = 3.40, P < 0.001; larger allele HR = 1.71, P = 0.002) or loss of independent walking (smaller allele HR = 2.78, P < 0.001; larger allele HR = 1.60; P < 0.001) earlier in disease course. Patients with more complex phenotypes carried larger expansions [smaller allele: complex neuropathy rate ratio (RR) = 1.30, P = 0.003; cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy and vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS) RR = 1.34, P < 0.001; larger allele: complex neuropathy RR = 1.33, P = 0.008; CANVAS RR = 1.31, P = 0.009]. Furthermore, larger repeat expansions in the smaller allele were associated with more pronounced cerebellar vermis atrophy (lobules IâV ÎČ = â1.06, P < 0.001; lobules VIâVII ÎČ = â0.34, P = 0.005). The repeat did not show significant instability during vertical transmission and across different tissues and brain regions.
RFC1 repeat size, particularly of the smaller allele, is one of the determinants of variability in RFC1 disease and represents a key prognostic factor to predict disease onset, phenotype and severity. Assessing the repeat size is warranted as part of the diagnostic test for RFC1 expansion
The Cholecystectomy As A Day Case (CAAD) Score: A Validated Score of Preoperative Predictors of Successful Day-Case Cholecystectomy Using the CholeS Data Set
Background
Day-case surgery is associated with significant patient and cost benefits. However, only 43% of cholecystectomy patients are discharged home the same day. One hypothesis is day-case cholecystectomy rates, defined as patients discharged the same day as their operation, may be improved by better assessment of patients using standard preoperative variables.
Methods
Data were extracted from a prospectively collected data set of cholecystectomy patients from 166 UK and Irish hospitals (CholeS). Cholecystectomies performed as elective procedures were divided into main (75%) and validation (25%) data sets. Preoperative predictors were identified, and a risk score of failed day case was devised using multivariate logistic regression. Receiver operating curve analysis was used to validate the score in the validation data set.
Results
Of the 7426 elective cholecystectomies performed, 49% of these were discharged home the same day. Same-day discharge following cholecystectomy was less likely with older patients (OR 0.18, 95% CI 0.15â0.23), higher ASA scores (OR 0.19, 95% CI 0.15â0.23), complicated cholelithiasis (OR 0.38, 95% CI 0.31 to 0.48), male gender (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.58â0.74), previous acute gallstone-related admissions (OR 0.54, 95% CI 0.48â0.60) and preoperative endoscopic intervention (OR 0.40, 95% CI 0.34â0.47). The CAAD score was developed using these variables. When applied to the validation subgroup, a CAAD score of â€5 was associated with 80.8% successful day-case cholecystectomy compared with 19.2% associated with a CAAD score >5 (pâ<â0.001).
Conclusions
The CAAD score which utilises data readily available from clinic letters and electronic sources can predict same-day discharges following cholecystectomy
