    I am a Camera, Subverted: Reflexivity, Sexuality, and Filming Styles in Bob Fosse’s 'Sweet Charity' (1969), 'Cabaret' (1972), and 'All That Jazz' (1979)

    The musical films of Bob Fosse, 'Sweet Charity' (1969), 'Cabaret' (1972), and 'All That Jazz' (1979) offer a radical alternative to the ‘arcadian’ musical format with edgier and darker themes as a response to the rapidly developing socio-politico climate and the sexual revolution. However, although 'Cabaret' remains well documented, his other musical films 'Sweet Charity' and 'All That Jazz', remain primarily neglected in academia, which I will rectify. Moreover, while many prolific writers and scholars, including Laura Mulvey and Rick Altman, have previously analysed the movie and film musical from a heteronormative male gaze perspective, this is at odds with Fosse’s approach to filmmaking, which often subverts such a hypothesis. My line of enquiry consequently developed to explore the link between filming styles and representations of gender and sexuality in Fosse’s films over a ten-year period and observe the various shifts in register. This approach eschews the more bibliographical texts, monographs, and documentaries about Fosse, allowing me to study his films critically from a unique perspective. Using a variety of methodologies and theories, including the social history of art, semiotics, feminism, formalism, and film studies, I will analyse selected case studies where the intersection between filming styles and representations of sexuality are most pertinent/interesting to my central argument. In the process, I will often refer to the terminologies ‘visual reflexivity’ and ‘theatrical reflexivity’ to explore this phenomenon and examine how they interact with gender in 'Sweet Charity', 'Cabaret', and 'All That Jazz' through techniques such as film editing and camera angles, as well as performative arts. Furthermore, Fosse’s radical use of cinematic space, including altered states of consciousness, is also explored coinciding with the backstage musicals’ shift from the ‘book musical’ to ‘concept musical’, in line with modern audiences’ expectations and avant-garde approaches to the genre

    Professional Learning with Action Research in Innovative Middle Schools

    This article illustrates how action research can be used as a model for professional development with middle grades educators in rapidly changing and technology-intensive schools. Drawing upon ten years of using this model, the authors present three examples of educator action research to highlight five characteristics of effective projects: (1) appropriate scope, (2) a collaborative approach, (3) accountability, (4) various data sources, and (5) a clear link to practice. Action research with these characteristics can help middle grades educators address emergent problems in 21st-century class- rooms and respond to the evolving needs of young adolescents

    A Cluster of Compact Radio Sources in W40

    We present deep 3.6 cm radio continuum observations of the HII region W40 obtained using the Very Large Array in its A and B configurations. We detect a total of 20 compact radio sources in a region of 4 x 4 arcmin, with 11 of them concentrated in a band with 30 arcsec of extent. We also present JHK photometry of the W40 cluster taken with the QUIRC instrument on the University of Hawaii 2.2 meter telescope. These data reveal that 15 of the 20 VLA sources have infrared counterparts, and 10 show radio variability with periods less than 20 days. Based on these combined radio and IR data, we propose that 8 of the radio sources are candidate ultracompact HII regions, 7 are likely to be young stellar objects, and 2 may be shocked interstellar gas.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal. 10 pages, 4 figures, plus online table in electronic versio

    Teacher Roles in Personalized Learning Environments.

    As school districts, major cities, and entire states in the United States adopt personalized learning as a reform strategy focused on the co-construction of learning opportunities between teachers and students, educators face shifting roles. This study examined the roles of teachers in personalized learning environments within a policy context of statewide legislation of personalized learning plans, flexible educational pathways, and proficiency-based assessment. The study used data from interviews with a purposefully selected group of 20 elementary and middle school teachers from 11 schools. Findings revealed teachers’ perceptions of their roles as (a) empowerers, (b) scouts, (c) scaffolders, and (d) assessors, as well as associated strategies within each role that participants perceived to be constructive. The use of role theory illuminated the potential for intrarole conflict and role strain between and among these roles along with the cultural dimensions of the shift to personalized learning

    The APOGEE-2 Survey of the Orion Star Forming Complex: I. Target Selection and Validation with early observations

    The Orion Star Forming Complex (OSFC) is a central target for the APOGEE-2 Young Cluster Survey. Existing membership catalogs span limited portions of the OSFC, reflecting the difficulty of selecting targets homogeneously across this extended, highly structured region. We have used data from wide field photometric surveys to produce a less biased parent sample of young stellar objects (YSOs) with infrared (IR) excesses indicative of warm circumstellar material or photometric variability at optical wavelengths across the full 420 square degrees extent of the OSFC. When restricted to YSO candidates with H < 12.4, to ensure S/N ~100 for a six visit source, this uniformly selected sample includes 1307 IR excess sources selected using criteria vetted by Koenig & Liesawitz and 990 optical variables identified in the Pan-STARRS1 3Ï€\pi survey: 319 sources exhibit both optical variability and evidence of circumstellar disks through IR excess. Objects from this uniformly selected sample received the highest priority for targeting, but required fewer than half of the fibers on each APOGEE-2 plate. We fill the remaining fibers with previously confirmed and new color-magnitude selected candidate OSFC members. Radial velocity measurements from APOGEE-1 and new APOGEE-2 observations taken in the survey's first year indicate that ~90% of the uniformly selected targets have radial velocities consistent with Orion membership.The APOGEE-2 Orion survey will include >1100 bona fide YSOs whose uniform selection function will provide a robust sample for comparative analyses of the stellar populations and properties across all sub-regions of Orion.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

    Compact HI clouds from the GALFA-HI survey

    The Galactic Arecibo L-band Feed Array HI (GALFA-HI) survey is mapping the entire Arecibo sky at 21-cm, over a velocity range of -700 to +700 km/s (LSR), at a velocity resolution of 0.18 km/s and a spatial resolution of 3.5 arcmin. The unprecedented resolution and sensitivity of the GALFA-HI survey have resulted in the detection of numerous isolated, very compact HI clouds at low Galactic velocities, which are distinctly separated from the HI disk emission. In the limited area of ~4600 deg2^2 surveyed so far, we have detected 96 of such compact clouds. The detected clouds are cold with a median Tk,max_{k,max} (the kinetic temperature in the case in which there is no non-thermal broadening) of 300 K. Moreover, these clouds are quite compact and faint, with median values of 5 arcmin in angular size, 0.75 K in peak brightness temperature, and 5×10185 \times 10^{18} cm−2^{-2} in HI column density. Most of the clouds deviate from Galactic rotation at the 20-30 km/s level, and a significant fraction show evidence for a multiphase medium and velocity gradients. No counterparts for these clouds were found in other wavebands. From the modeling of spatial and velocity distributions of the whole compact cloud population, we find that the bulk of the compact clouds are related to the Galactic disk, and their distances are likely to be in the range of 0.1 to a few kpc. We discuss various possible scenarios for the formation and maintenance of this cloud population and its significance for Galactic ISM studies.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    Clinical features of the pathogenic m.5540G>A mitochondrial transfer RNA tryptophan gene mutation

    AbstractMitochondrial DNA disease is one of the most common groups of inherited neuromuscular disorders and frequently associated with marked phenotypic and genotypic heterogeneity. We describe an adult patient who initially presented with childhood-onset ataxia without a family history and an unremarkable diagnostic muscle biopsy. Subsequent multi-system manifestations included basal ganglia calcification, proteinuria, cataract and retinitis pigmentosa, prompting a repeat muscle biopsy that showed features consistent with mitochondrial myopathy 13 years later. She had a stroke with restricted diffusion change in the basal ganglia and internal capsule at age 44 years. Molecular genetic testing identified a previously-reported pathogenic, heteroplasmic mutation in the mitochondrial-encoded transfer RNA tryptophan (MT-TW) gene which based on family studies was likely to have arisen de novo in our patient. Interestingly, we documented an increase in the mutant mtDNA heteroplasmy level in her second biopsy (72% compared to 56%), reflecting the progression of clinical disease

    Comparing molecular gas across cosmic time-scales: the Milky Way as both a typical spiral galaxy and a high-redshift galaxy analogue

    Detailed observations of the nearest star-forming regions in the Milky Way (MW) provide the ultimate benchmark for studying star formation. The extent to which the results of these Galaxy-based studies can be extrapolated to extragalactic systems depends on the overlap of the environmental conditions probed. In this paper, we compare the properties of clouds and star-forming regions in the MW with those in nearby galaxies and in the high-redshift Universe. We find that in terms of their baryonic composition, kinematics and densities, the clouds in the solar neighbourhood are similar to those in nearby galaxies. The clouds and regions in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ, i.e. the inner 250 pc) of the MW are indistinguishable from high-redshift clouds and galaxies. The presently low star formation rate in the CMZ therefore implies that either (1) its gas represents the initial conditions for high-redshift starbursts or (2) some yet unidentified process consistently suppresses star formation over ≳ 108 yr time-scales. We conclude that the MW contains large reservoirs of gas with properties directly comparable to most of the known range of star formation environments and is therefore an excellent template for studying star formation across cosmological time-scales

    A Chandra Observation of the Obscured Star-Forming Complex W40

    The young stellar cluster illuminating the W40 H II region, one of the nearest massive star forming regions, has been observed with the ACIS detector on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Due to its high obscuration, this is a poorly-studied stellar cluster with only a handful of bright stars visible in the optical band, including three OB stars identified as primary excitation sources. We detect 225 X-ray sources, of which 85% are confidently identified as young stellar members of the region. Two potential distances of the cluster, 260 pc and 600 pc, are used in the paper. Supposing the X-ray luminosity function to be universal, it supports a 600 pc distance as a lower limit for W40 and a total population of at least 600 stars down to 0.1 Mo under the assumption of a coeval population with a uniform obscuration. In fact, there is strong spatial variation in Ks-band-excess disk fraction and non-uniform obscuration due to a dust lane that is identified in absorption in optical, infrared and X-ray. The dust lane is likely part of a ring of material which includes the molecular core within W40. In contrast to the likely ongoing star formation in the dust lane, the molecular core is inactive. The star cluster has a spherical morphology, an isothermal sphere density profile, and mass segregation down to 1.5 Mo. However, other cluster properties, including a \leq{1} Myr age estimate and ongoing star formation, indicate that the cluster is not dynamically relaxed.     The Early Ultraviolet Evolution of the ONeMg Nova V382 Velorum 1999

    We present a multiwavelength study of the ONeMg Galactic nova V382 Velorum 1999 using HST/STIS and FUSE ultraviolet spectra and comparisons with published groundbased optical spectra. We find a close match to the basic phenomenology of another well-studied ONeMg nova, V1974 Cygni (Nova Cygni 1992), in particular to the spectral development through the start of the nebular phase. Following an ``iron curtain'' phase, the nova proceeded through a stage of P Cygni line profiles on all important resonance lines, as in many ONeMg novae and unlike the CO class. Emergent emission lines displayed considerable structure, as seen in V1974 Cyg, indicating fragmentation of the ejecta at the earliest stages of the outburst. Analysis and modeling of our ultraviolet spectra suggest that 4 - 5 ×\times 10−4^{-4}M⊙_{\odot} of material was ejected and that the distance to the nova is ≃2.5\simeq 2.5 kpc. Relative to solar values, we find the following abundances: He = 1.0, C = 0.6±\pm0.3, N = 17±\pm4, O = 3.4±\pm0.3, Ne = 17±\pm3, Mg = 2.6±\pm0.1, Al = 21±\pm2, and Si = 0.5±\pm0.3. Finally, we briefly draw comparisons with Nova LMC 2000, another ONeMg nova, for which similar data were obtained with HST and FUSE
