    Morphological characteristics of sensilla on the female ovipositor of Lype phaeopa (Psychomyiidae; Trichoptera)

    An important aspect of the association of Lype phaeopa (Stephens) with submerged wood is the oviposition behavior of adult females, which preferably oviposit their eggs on moist emergent or submerged parts of woody debris with a structured surface. The eggs are commonly deposited in cracks and crevices using the elongated ovipositor. Ovipositor morphology and various sensilla on the tip and along the ovipositor were studied by scanning electron microscopy and their possible function discussed. Structure of these sensilla and pre-oviposition behavior of the females point to a preference for certain oviposition sites on woody debris. This may be a key factor for the distribution and development of the larvae

    Die Auswertung der statistischen ZusammenhĂ€nge zwischen Lufttemperatur und den Temperaturen der FließgewĂ€sser lĂ€sst zukĂŒnftig einen signifikanten Anstieg der Wassertemperaturen aufgrund des projizierten Klimawandels erwarten. In den UnterlĂ€ufen der FlĂŒsse zeigt die statistische Auswertung eine 1:1-Beziehung der Temperaturen an. Die VerĂ€nderung der mittleren Lufttemperatur um 1 Kelvin hat eine VerĂ€nderung der Wassertemperatur um 1 Kelvin zur Folge. Die OberlĂ€ufe der BĂ€che in QuellnĂ€he oder in höheren Lagen werden aufgrund des grĂ¶ĂŸeren Grundwassereinflusses voraussichtlich eine geringere TemperaturverĂ€nderung in Relation zur LufttemperaturverĂ€nderung erfahren. Alle ĂŒbrigen FließgewĂ€sserabschnitte liegen hinsichtlich der Temperaturdynamik und TemperaturverĂ€nderung zwischen den beiden genannten GrenzfĂ€llen ohne auffĂ€llige regionale Unterschiede

    Um statistische ZusammenhĂ€nge zwischen Lufttemperatur und Wassertemperatur zu analysieren, wurden zunĂ€chst in einer Vorstudie alle kurzfristig verfĂŒgbaren Temperaturmessungen in OberflĂ€chengewĂ€ssern sowie im Boden-, Sicker- und Grundwasser gesammelt, fehlerbereinigt und in Datenbanken zusammengefĂŒhrt. Die erzeugten 600.000 DatensĂ€tze können direkt mit Daten zu Lufttemperatur, Sonnenscheindauer oder globaler Strahlung aus naheliegenden Wetterstationen verknĂŒpft und somit fĂŒr kĂŒnftige Auswertungen genutzt werden. Die PrĂŒfung unterschiedlicher Wassertemperaturmodelle hat gezeigt, dass sich fĂŒr eine sachsenweite Analyse zur AbschĂ€tzung der Auswirkung des Klimawandels auf Wassertemperaturen die einfacheren statistischen Methoden aufgrund ihrer DatenverfĂŒgbarkeit eher eignen als die fachlich genauer erscheinenden komplexen Modelle mit Berechnungen zu Energiehaushalt und WĂ€rmeaustausch von GewĂ€ssern.     Recent advances quantifying the large wood dynamics in river basins: New methods and remaining challenges

Reviews of Geophysics. doi:10.1002/2015RG000514Large wood is an important physical component of woodland rivers and significantly influences river morphology. It is also a key component of stream ecosystems. However, large wood is also a source of risk for human activities as it may damage infrastructure, block river channels, and induce flooding. Therefore, the analysis and quantification of large wood and its mobility are crucial for understanding and managing wood in rivers. As the amount of large-wood-related studies by researchers, river managers, and stakeholders increases, documentation of commonly used and newly available techniques and their effectiveness has also become increasingly relevant as well. Important data and knowledge have been obtained from the application of very different approaches and have generated a significant body of valuable information representative of different environments. This review brings a comprehensive qualitative and quantitative summary of recent advances regarding the different processes involved in large wood dynamics in fluvial systems including wood budgeting and wood mechanics. First, some key definitions and concepts are introduced. Second, advances in quantifying large wood dynamics are reviewed; in particular, how measurements and modeling can be combined to integrate our understanding of how large wood moves through and is retained within river systems. Throughout, we present a quantitative and integrated meta-analysis compiled from different studies and geographical regions. Finally, we conclude by highlighting areas of particular research importance and their likely future trajectories, and we consider a particularly underresearched area so as to stress the future challenges for large wood research. ©2016.
