    The H1N1 post-mortem

    The H1 N1 pandemic started more than a year ago at the end of March in Mexico with Malta having it's first positive cases on the first of July. Since July 2009, we had 913 persons who were positive to Hl Nl with 261 cases hospitalised (207 with H1 N1 and 54 with Influenza A) and from these 8 cases needed intensive care. In all, 5 died as a result of this pandemic locally. Over 91 ,471 residents took the vaccine and 2,700 antiviral courses have been dispensed through the government pharmacies. In retrospect one would easily conclude that a massive amount of money has been spent on a minor threat but judgment using hindsight is not appropriate when dealing with the potential risk of a public health threat. The real question that needs to be asked is what are the aims and objectives for this country if the threat of a novel influenza virus emerged and was spreading all over the world? And where the objectives for the H1 N1 strategy achieved or not?peer-reviewe

    Nonlinear heart rate variability features for real-life stress detection. Case study : students under stress due to university examination

    Background: This study investigates the variations of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) due to a real-life stressor and proposes a classifier based on nonlinear features of HRV for automatic stress detection. Methods: 42 students volunteered to participate to the study about HRV and stress. For each student, two recordings were performed: one during an on-going university examination, assumed as a real-life stressor, and one after holidays. Nonlinear analysis of HRV was performed by using Poincaré Plot, Approximate Entropy, Correlation dimension, Detrended Fluctuation Analysis, Recurrence Plot. For statistical comparison, we adopted the Wilcoxon Signed Rank test and for development of a classifier we adopted the Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). Results: Almost all HRV features measuring heart rate complexity were significantly decreased in the stress session. LDA generated a simple classifier based on the two Poincaré Plot parameters and Approximate Entropy, which enables stress detection with a total classification accuracy, a sensitivity and a specificity rate of 90%, 86%, and 95% respectively. Conclusions: The results of the current study suggest that nonlinear HRV analysis using short term ECG recording could be effective in automatically detecting real-life stress condition, such as a university examination

    Influenza and the implications of a pandemic for Malta

    An influenza pandemic is inevitable and recent reports from Southeast Asia on avian influenza viruses infecting humans have served to fuel worries that a new pandemic is near. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the epidemiological and public health aspects of seasonal, avian and pandemic influenza through a literature review and to describe the possible effects of an Influenza pandemic on Malta using the FluAid model. The results of the model indicate that between 158 and 454 deaths would be expected for a 12-week pandemic causing clinical symptoms in 25% of the population. There would be between 432 and 1,488 hospitalisations and between 40,483 and 74,704 general practice consultations. Although the results of the model show a wide range of estimates and are limited by a lack of local parameters, the data presented in this article shows the severe effect of a pandemic on the Maltese health care system and will be useful for pandemic planning. Further research needs to be undertaken to determine local parameters to improve the model estimates and local health authorities need to ensure that adequate resources are provided to implement an effective pandemic preparedness plan.peer-reviewe

    Equilibrium responses of global net primary production and carbon storage to doubled atmospheric carbon dioxide: sensitivity to changes in vegetation nitrogen concentration

    We ran the terrestrial ecosystem model (TEM) for the globe at 0.5° resolution for atmospheric CO2 concentrations of 340 and 680 parts per million by volume (ppmv) to evaluate global and regional responses of net primary production (NPP) and carbon storage to elevated CO2 for their sensitivity to changes in vegetation nitrogen concentration. At 340 ppmv, TEM estimated global NPP of 49.0 1015 g (Pg) C yr−1 and global total carbon storage of 1701.8 Pg C; the estimate of total carbon storage does not include the carbon content of inert soil organic matter. For the reference simulation in which doubled atmospheric CO2 was accompanied with no change in vegetation nitrogen concentration, global NPP increased 4.1 Pg C yr−1 (8.3%), and global total carbon storage increased 114.2 Pg C. To examine sensitivity in the global responses of NPP and carbon storage to decreases in the nitrogen concentration of vegetation, we compared doubled CO2 responses of the reference TEM to simulations in which the vegetation nitrogen concentration was reduced without influencing decomposition dynamics (“lower N” simulations) and to simulations in which reductions in vegetation nitrogen concentration influence decomposition dynamics (“lower N+D” simulations). We conducted three lower N simulations and three lower N+D simulations in which we reduced the nitrogen concentration of vegetation by 7.5, 15.0, and 22.5%. In the lower N simulations, the response of global NPP to doubled atmospheric CO2 increased approximately 2 Pg C yr−1 for each incremental 7.5% reduction in vegetation nitrogen concentration, and vegetation carbon increased approximately an additional 40 Pg C, and soil carbon increased an additional 30 Pg C, for a total carbon storage increase of approximately 70 Pg C. In the lower N+D simulations, the responses of NPP and vegetation carbon storage were relatively insensitive to differences in the reduction of nitrogen concentration, but soil carbon storage showed a large change. The insensitivity of NPP in the N+D simulations occurred because potential enhancements in NPP associated with reduced vegetation nitrogen concentration were approximately offset by lower nitrogen availability associated with the decomposition dynamics of reduced litter nitrogen concentration. For each 7.5% reduction in vegetation nitrogen concentration, soil carbon increased approximately an additional 60 Pg C, while vegetation carbon storage increased by only approximately 5 Pg C. As the reduction in vegetation nitrogen concentration gets greater in the lower N+D simulations, more of the additional carbon storage tends to become concentrated in the north temperate-boreal region in comparison to the tropics. Other studies with TEM show that elevated CO2 more than offsets the effects of climate change to cause increased carbon storage. The results of this study indicate that carbon storage would be enhanced by the influence of changes in plant nitrogen concentration on carbon assimilation and decomposition rates. Thus changes in vegetation nitrogen concentration may have important implications for the ability of the terrestrial biosphere to mitigate increases in the atmospheric concentration of CO2 and climate changes associated with the increases

    My work is positioned within an emerging trend in entrepreneurial research which revises prior work by considering the impact of selection effects. Prior research on the individual-level determinants of start-up size, performance, and exit has ignored that individuals select into entrepreneurship and this might seriously bias our understanding of the post-entry process. I'm particularly well positioned to investigate the nature, the extent, and the consequences of these selection effects because I could access extraordinary data on the Swedish population, which allows me to incorporate information on individuals who were at risk but did not enter entrepreneurship. Yet, the overall contribution of my dissertation goes beyond flagging a selection problem and developing a method to cope with it. It comes up with reexamining and even questioning some of the most prominent theoretical explanations to fundamental issues in entrepreneurship, such as the notion of initial size, the liability of smallness, and the interplay between entrepreneurial performance and firm exit

    Impacts of extreme winter warming events on litter decomposition in a sub-Arctic heathland

    Arctic climate change is expected to lead to a greater frequency of extreme winter warming events. During these events, temperatures rapidly increase to well above 0 degrees C for a number of days, which can lead to snow melt at the landscape scale, loss of insulating snow cover and warming of soils. However, upon return of cold ambient temperatures, soils can freeze deeper and may experience more freeze-thaw cycles due to the absence of a buffering snow layer. Such loss of snow cover and changes in soil temperatures may be critical for litter decomposition since a stable soil microclimate during winter (facilitated by snow cover) allows activity of soil organisms. Indeed, a substantial part of fresh litter decomposition may occur in winter. However, the impacts of extreme winter warming events on soil processes such as decomposition have never before been investigated. With this study we quantify the impacts of winter warming events on fresh litter decomposition using field simulations and lab studies. Winter warming events were simulated in sub-Arctic heathland using infrared heating lamps and soil warming cables during March (typically the period of maximum snow depth) in three consecutive years of 2007, 2008, and 2009. During the winters of 2008 and 2009, simulations were also run in January (typically a period of shallow snow cover) on separate plots. The lab study included soil cores with and without fresh litter subjected to winter-warming simulations in climate chambers. Litter decomposition of common plant species was unaffected by winter warming events simulated either in the lab (litter of Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii), or field (litter of Vaccinium vitis-idaea, and B. pubescens ssp. czerepanovii) with the exception of Vaccinium myrtillus (a common deciduous dwarf shrub) that showed less mass loss in response to winter warming events. Soil CO2 efflux measured in the lab study was (as expected) highly responsive to winter warming events but surprisingly fresh litter decomposition was not. Most fresh litter mass loss in the lab occurred during the first 3-4 weeks (simulating the period after litter fall). In contrast to past understanding, this suggests that winter decomposition of fresh litter is almost nonexistent and observations of substantial mass loss across the cold season seen here and in other studies may result from leaching in autumn, prior to the onset of "true" winter.     [ES] La presente tesis doctoral ha centrado la atención en la síntesis de nuevos materiales MOFs obtenidos por intercambio post-sintético de MOFs descritos anteriormente o por heterounión de MOFs estables que tienen estructura UiO66. Estos materiales se han aplicado como fotocatalizadores para la prometedora reacción de división completa del agua que pretende obtener H2 y O2 en forma estequiométrica a partir de agua en ausencia de agentes sacrificantes o nanopartículas metálicas. El nuevo material UiO66 (Zr/Ce/Ti) mostró resultados sorprendentes para la reacción general de división del agua en ambas condiciones de luz UV-Visible e irradiación solar. También se obtuvieron resultados interesantes en el caso del nucleo-corteza UiO66(Zr)-NH225@UiO66(Ce) que, en presencia de agua, cuando se irradió con luz ultravioleta y con luz solar, permitió obtener 550 mol*g- 1 de H2 y 350 mol*g-1 de H2 en 24 h respectivamente, en las mismas condiciones de trabajo definidas para UiO66(Zr/Ce/Ti). En este trabajo de tesis se presentó por primera vez la posibilidad de reducir 4-NP a través de una metodología tándem que involucra primero la producción de H2 a partir de agua en presencia de metanol, como agente de sacrificio, y UiO66(Zr)-NH2, como fotocatalizador, y la posterior reducción de 4-NP a 4-AP. Por otro lado, se ha demostrado que los materiales defectuosos con estructura de UiO66 pueden reducir selectivamente los dobles enlaces polarizados X=Y en presencia de gas H2.[CA] La present tesi doctoral ha centrat l'atenció en la síntesi de nous materials MOFs obtinguts per intercanvi post-sintètic de MOFs descrits anteriorment o per heterounió de MOFs estables que tenen estructura UiO66. També es van obtindre resultats interessants en el cas del core-shell UiO66 (Zr) - NH225@UiO66 (Ce) que, en presència d'aigua, quan es va irradiar amb llum ultravioleta i amb llum solar, va permetre obtindre 550 mol*g-1 de H2 i 350 mol*g-1 de H2 en 24 h respectivament, en les mateixes condicions de treball definides per a UiO66 (Zr/Ce/Ti). En este treball de tesi es va presentar per primera vegada la possibilitat de reduir 4-nitrofenol a través d'una metodologia tàndem que involucra primer la producció de H2 a partir d'aigua en presència de metanol, com a agent de sacrifici, i UiO66 (Zr) -NH2, com fotocatalizador, i la posterior reducció de 4-NP a 4-AP. D'altra banda, s'ha demostrat que els materials defectuosos amb estructura d'UiO66 poden reduir selectivament els dobles enllaços polaritzats X=Y en presència de gas H2.[EN] The present doctoral thesis has focused the attention on the synthesis of new MOFs materials obtained either by post-synthetic interchange of previously described MOFs or by heterojunction of stable MOFs having UiO66 structure. These materials have been applied as photocatalysts for the promising Overall Water Splitting reaction which claims to obtain H2 and O2 stoichiometrically starting from water in the absence of sacrificial agents or deposited metals nanoparticles. The new material UiO66 (Zr/Ce/Ti) showed surprising results in both UV- Visible light and sunlight irradiation conditions. Interesting results were also obtained in the case of the core-shell named UiO66(Zr)-NH225@UiO66(Ce) which, in the presence of water, when irradiated with both ultraviolet and solar light, allowed to obtain 550 mol*g-1 of H2 and 350 mol*g-1 of H2 in 24 h respectively, in the same working conditions defined for UiO66 (Zr/Ce/Ti). In this thesis was presented, for the first time, the possibility of reducing 4NP through a tandem methodology which, first, involves the production of H2 from water in the presence of methanol as a sacrificial agent and UiO66(Zr)-NH2 as a photo-catalyst, and subsequent the 4 NP reduction to 4 AP.     Development and Synthetic Applications of Anion Relay Chemistry Tactics — Design, Synthesis and Validation of Small-Molecule Mimics of the Immune Cell Receptor Cd4

    This thesis comprises two independent Parts. Part I describes the implementation of Anion Relay Chemistry (ARC) tactics in the synthesis of natural products and natural product precursor scaffolds. Chapter 1 discusses the design and execution of a unified strategy exploiting ARC Type I and Type II four- component fragment unions for the synthesis of natural products of the Cryptocarya family. The ARC tactics play here a pivotal role in generating, in a single flask, structurally elaborate synthetic intermediates from relatively simple, readily accessible starting materials, leading to increased efficiencies in the construction of the chosen synthetic targets compared to previous reports. Chapter 2, in turn, describes the validation of a Type II ARC protocol permitting the stereocontrolled introduction of a propionate unit in tricomponent adducts via a new aldehyde “linchpin,” followed by an application in the construction of a putative C16-C29 segment of natural product rhizopodin. Part II describes the synthesis and structure-based optimization of small-molecule mimics of CD4, a receptor that mediates infection of immune cells by Human v Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Chapter 1 describes the development of a synthetic route for the stereoselective, scalable preparation of compound JP-III-048, a small-molecule CD4 mimic that had exhibited promising activity in HIV entry inhibition assays. Structural modifications guided by crystallographic and computational data ultimately leading to both more potent and more broadly active analogues are discussed in Chapter 2. Extensive studies by our collaborators have led to the discovery that these small molecules have the capability of sensitizing both viral particles and infected cells to neutralization by the immune system. These findings are discussed in Chapter 3
