Recent updates and perspectives on approaches for the development of vaccines against visceral leishmaniasis
All rights reserved. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is one of the most important tropical diseases worldwide. Although chemotherapy has been widely used to treat this disease, problems related to the development of parasite resistance and side effects associated with the compounds used have been noted. Hence, alternative approaches for VL control are desirable. Some methods, such as vector control and culling of infected dogs, are insufficiently effective, with the latter not ethically recommended. The development of vaccines to prevent VL is a feasible and desirable measure for disease control, for example, some vaccines designed to protect dogs against VL have recently been brought to market. These vaccines are based on the combination of parasite fractions or recombinant proteins with adjuvants that are able to induce cellular immune responses, however, their partial efficacy and the absence of a vaccine to protect against human leishmaniasis underline the need for characterization of new vaccine candidates. Long-range and short-range dihadron angular correlations in central PbPb collisions at âsNN=2.76 TeV

for central PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76TeV over a broad range in relative pseudorapidity ( ) and the full range of relative azimuthal angle ( ). The data were collected with the CMS detector, at the LHC. A broadening of the away-side ( ) azimuthal correlation is observed at all , as compared to the measurements in pp collisions. Furthermore, long-range dihadron correlations in are observed for particles with similar values. This phenomenon, also known as the \ridge",
persists up to at least j j = 4. For particles with transverse momenta (pT) of 2-4 GeV/c, the ridge is found to be most prominent when these particles are correlated with particles of pT = 2-6 GeV/c, and to be much reduced when paired with particles of pT = 10-12 GeV/c
Resposta in vitro de fungos agentes de micoses cutâneas frente aos antifúngicos sistêmicos mais utilizados na dermatologia In vitro response of cutaneous mycosis fungal agents to the most widely used systemic antifungals in dermatology
FUNDAMENTOS - A alta frequĂŞncia das micoses cutâneas justifica a necessidade de avaliar a possĂvel contribuição da determinação do perfil de susceptibilidade aos antifĂşngicos in vitro. OBJETIVO - Avaliar se existe variabilidade nos isolados fĂşngicos quanto Ă susceptibilidade in vitro de fungos filamentosos, previamente isolados de micoses cutâneas, frente aos antifĂşngicos fluconazol, cetoconazol, itraconazol e terbinafina. MĂTODOS - Os fungos foram isolados e identificados por meio da metodologia clĂĄssica e o teste de susceptibilidade aos antifĂşngicos foi realizado segundo o mĂŠtodo de microdiluição em caldo, de acordo com protocolo preconizado pelo Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), documento M38-A. RESULTADOS - Das 80 amostras de fungos filamentosos identificadas, o gĂŞnero Trichophyton representou 81%. As quatro drogas analisadas apresentaram grande variação nos gĂŞneros Trichophyton e Microsporum. O gĂŞnero Fusarium foi resistente a todas as drogas testadas. A terbinafina foi o antimicĂłtico mais eficaz contra a maioria dos isolados fĂşngicos. CONCLUSĂO - Houve uma grande variabilidade nos perfis de resposta aos antifĂşngicos testados. O estabelecimento de um mĂŠtodo-teste de referĂŞncia permitirĂĄ ao clĂnico maior objetividade na escolha de uma terapia adequada.<br>BACKGROUND - The high frequency of cutaneous mycosis justify the need to evaluate the possible contribution of in vitro profile of susceptibility to antifungal agents. OBJECTIVE - To evaluate whether there is variability in in vitro susceptibility by filamentous fungi, previously isolated from cutaneous mycosis, to fluconazole, ketoconazole, itraconazole and terbinafine. METHODS - Fungi were isolated and identified by classical methods and the antifungal susceptibility test was performed using the method of broth microdilution, according to a protocol recommended by the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), through M38-A document. RESULTS - Amongst the 80 filamentous fungi identified, Trichophyton genus represented 81%. The four examined drugs showed great variation for Trichophyton spp and Microsporum spp. Fusarium spp was resistant to all tested drugs. Terbinafine was the most effective drug against the majority of the isolated fungi. CONCLUSION - There was great variability in response profiles to the tested antifungals. The definition of a reference test method will offer higher objectivity for physicians to choose the appropriate therapy
