New towns in Poland

Over the last three decades, more than a hundred new towns have emerged in Poland. The paper concerns the characteristics of these towns. It also addresses transformation of the settlement pattern caused by the change of the towns’ formal-legal status. The paper also verifies the hypotheses aimed at identifying the factors that contribute to the creation of new towns

On the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to a linear functional equation

We investigate the asymptotic behaviour at infinity of solutions of the equation ϕ(x) = Sϕ(x +M(s))σ(ds). We show among others that, under some assumptions, any positive solution of the equation which is integrable on a vicinity of infinity or vanishes at +∞ tends on some sequence to zero faster than some exponential function, but it does not vanish faster than another such function

Zipf’s Law for cities: estimation of regression function parameters based on the weight of American urban areas and Polish towns

The paper aims at presentation of a methodology where the classical linear regression model is modified to guarantee more realistic estimations and lower parameter oscillations for a specific urban system. That can be achieved by means of the weighted regression model which is based on weights ascribed to individual cities. The major shortcoming of the methods used so far – especially the classical simple linear regression – is the treatment of individual cities as points carrying the same weight, in consequence of which the linear regression poorly matches the empirical distribution of cities. The aim is reached in a severalstage process: demonstration of the drawbacks of the linear parameter estimation methods traditionally used for the purposes of urban system analyses; introduction of the weighted regression which to a large extent diminishes specific drawbacks; and empirical verification of the method with the use of the input data for the USA and Poland.The paper aims at presentation of a methodology where the classicallinear regression model is modified to guarantee more realistic estimations andlower parameter oscillations for a specific urban system. Degraded towns in the Łódzkie Voivodeship in the end of the first decade of XXI century

Former cities are an important component of the rural settlement network. The purpose of the study is to characterize the villages located within the current borders of the Łódź Voivodeship, which have lost their city status, as well as the answer to the question whether there are villages in this area with real chances of obtaining this status in the near future. The set of villages discussed in the article includes all former cities that were degraded before 2010. Research has shown that there are relatively many (73) such villages in the Łódź Voivodeship, which is a consequence of the tsarist decree depriving many cities of their rights within the Russian partition in the second half of the 19th century.Miasta zdegradowane są ważnym składnikiem wiejskiej sieci osadniczej. Celem opracowania jest charakterystyka miejscowości położonych w obecnych granicach województwa łódzkiego, które utraciły status miasta, a także odpowiedź na pytanie, czy są na tym terenie jednostki osadnicze mające realne szanse na uzyskanie w niedalekiej przyszłości tego statusu. Zbiór miejscowości omówiony w artykule obejmuje wszystkie byłe miasta, które zostały zdegradowane przed 2010 r. Badania pokazały, że na obszarze województwa łódzkiego jest ich relatywnie dużo (aż 73), co jest konsekwencją dekretu carskiego, pozbawiającego w II połowie XIX w. praw miejskich wielu ówczesnych miast w granicach zaboru rosyjskiego

Iliac vessels injury caused by hip artificial prosthesis central dislocation

Przedstawiono rzadki przypadek ostrego niedokrwienia kończyny dolnej lewej spowodowany uciskiem i uszkodzeniem lewej tętnicy biodrowej wspólnej w wyniku centralnego zwichnięcia panewki protezy stawu biodrowego. Po wykonaniu angio-TK i potwierdzeniu diagnozy pacjentkę operowano w trybie natychmiastowym. Usunięto panewkę endoprotezy z miednicy, zaopatrzono chirurgicznie uszkodzoną tętnicę biodrową wspólną i wykonano trombektomię tętnic udowych, uzyskując dobry efekt leczenia naczyniowego. Okres pooperacyjny przebiegł bez komplikacji, ustalono dalsze leczenie i kontrolę w poradni chirurgii naczyniowej.This study presents a rare case of acute lower left limb ischemia as a cause of pressure and damage to the common iliac artery as a result of central artificial hip dislocation. After a physical examination and an angio-CT, the diagnosis was confirmed and the patient was operated on immediately. The good effect of the vascular treatment was achieved after removing the acetabulum of the artificial hip joint, and common iliac artery repair, additionally after femoral artery thrombectomy. The post-operational period ran without complications, while further treatment and check-ups were carried out in the Department of General and Vascular Surgery’s outpatient department

Primary gigantic lipoma of the arm

This paper presents a rare case of a primary gigantic tumour of the right arm in a fifty-seven-year old man. The measurements of the arm tumour were as follows: length - 490 mm, width - 340 mm, circumference - 1080 mm, weight - 7350 grams, while the period of its development was about 20 years. The patient was admitted to hospital as an emergency case suffering from bleeding of superficial tumour vessels and secondary anaemia. The patient was operated on in a planned course of action. During and after the operation no complications were observed while secondary anaemia syndromes receded.Przedstawiono rzadki przypadek ogromnego pojedynczego tłuszczaka prawego ramienia u 57-letniego mężczyzny, który został przyjęty na oddział chirurgii ogólnej w trybie pilnym z powodu obfitego krwawienia żylnego z powierzchownego naczynia skóry nad tłuszczakiem. U pacjenta występowały objawy niedokrwistości wtórnej. Wymiary guza ramienia prawego: długość - 490 mm, szerokość - 340 mm, obwód - 1080 mm, waga - 7350 gramów, okres wzrostu - około 20 lat. Po wyrównaniu parametrów morfologicznych zoperowano pacjenta w trybie planowym; operacja i okres pooperacyjny przebiegały bez komplikacji. Objawy wtórnej niedokrwistości ustąpiły po leczeniu chirurgicznym

Przekształcenia małych miast województwa kujawsko-pomorskiego

Zakres problemowy opracowania poświęconego przekształceniom małych miast województwa kujawsko-pomorskiego jest stosunkowo szeroki, ponieważ obejmuje analizę zmian struktury systemu miast, dynamikę ludnościową oraz problematykę przemian społeczno-gospodarczych. Ze względu na zastosowanie konwencji statystyki porównawczej (lata obejmujące pierwszą i drugą dekadę okresu transformacji), badania mają charakter quasi-dynamiczny.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”.
