    Brain Structural Networks Associated with Intelligence and Visuomotor Ability

    Increasing evidence indicates that multiple structures in the brain are associated with intelligence and cognitive function at the network level. The association between the grey matter (GM) structural network and intelligence and cognition is not well understood. We applied a multivariate approach to identify the pattern of GM and link the structural network to intelligence and cognitive functions. Structural magnetic resonance imaging was acquired from 92 healthy individuals. Source-based morphometry analysis was applied to the imaging data to extract GM structural covariance. We assessed the intelligence, verbal fluency, processing speed, and executive functioning of the participants and further investigated the correlations of the GM structural networks with intelligence and cognitive functions. Six GM structural networks were identified. The cerebello-parietal component and the frontal component were significantly associated with intelligence. The parietal and frontal regions were each distinctively associated with intelligence by maintaining structural networks with the cerebellum and the temporal region, respectively. The cerebellar component was associated with visuomotor ability. Our results support the parieto-frontal integration theory of intelligence by demonstrating how each core region for intelligence works in concert with other regions. In addition, we revealed how the cerebellum is associated with intelligence and cognitive functions

    ITGAM is associated with disease susceptibility and renal nephritis of systemic lupus erythematosus in Hong Kong Chinese and Thai

    ITGAM was recently found to be associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in populations of not only European ancestry, but also in Hispanic- and African-Americans, Mexicans and Colombians. The risk alleles in the gene, however, were found to be monomorphic in two Asian populations examined: Japanese and Korean. In this study, using a collection of 910 SLE patients and 2360 controls from Chinese living in Hong Kong, analyzed by both genome-wide association and direct sequencing, we confirmed the association of the same risk alleles in ITGAM with the disease. These findings were further replicated in the Thai population with 278 patients and 383 ethnicity- and geography-matched controls. Subphenotype stratification analyses showed significantly more involvement of the gene in patients with renal nephritis and neurological disorders. Although our results support a pivotal role by rs1143679 (R77H) in disease association, our data also suggests an additional contribution from rs1143683, another non-synonymous polymorphism in this gene (A858V). Therefore, despite the low-allele frequencies of the risk alleles of the gene in our two Asian populations, ITGAM was confirmed to be a risk factor related to disease susceptibility and probably severe manifestations of SLE

    Postoperative complications after procedure for prolapsed hemorrhoids (PPH) and stapled transanal rectal resection (STARR) procedures

    Procedure for prolapsing hemorrhoids (PPH) and stapled transanal rectal resection for obstructed defecation (STARR) carry low postoperative pain, but may be followed by unusual and severe postoperative complications. This review deals with the pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of adverse events that may occasionally be life threatening. PPH and STARR carry the expected morbidity following anorectal surgery, such as bleeding, strictures and fecal incontinence. Complications that are particular to these stapled procedures are rectovaginal fistula, chronic proctalgia, total rectal obliteration, rectal wall hematoma and perforation with pelvic sepsis often requiring a diverting stoma. A higher complication rate and worse results are expected after PPH for fourth-degree piles. Enterocele and anismus are contraindications to PPH and STARR and both operations should be used with caution in patients with weak sphincters. In conclusion, complications after PPH and STARR are not infrequent and may be difficult to manage. However, if performed in selected cases by skilled specialists aware of the risks and associated diseases, some complications may be prevented

    Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.

    BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF.     Effect of the different timing of AMF inoculation on plant growth and flower quality of chrysanthemum

    Plant growth and flower quality of an ornamental plant (Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat) var. Baekgwang in response to the different timing of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation were examined. To evaluate the effects of AMF inoculation timing on growth of chrysanthemum cuttings, AMF was directly inoculated to cutting (AMFD), or inoculated at transplanting stage (AMFA). Control plants did not receive AMF inoculation (CON).A significant difference in plant growth was observed in AMF treatment compared to non-inoculated treatment at transplanting stage. Rooting rate in AMF treatment was 99% whereas it was 76% in non-mycorrhizal inoculation. The colonization rate was 3.9% in AMF treatment, while it was 0% in non-AMF treatment. Tap root length and number of lateral roots in AMF treatment were twice than those of non-AMF treatment. Inoculation of AMF significantly increased shoot and root growth at transplanting stage.At 7 weeks after transplanting, chrysanthemum plants in AMFD and AMFA treatments had 46.42 and 34.24% colonization rate, respectively. Low colonization rate (6.08%) was observed in CON, possibly due to contamination. Plant height, leaf area, root length, and fresh and dry weight of shoots, stems and roots in AMF inoculation treatments (AMFD and AMFA) were significantly higher than control plants. AMF inoculation significantly shortened flowering time compared to non-AMF plants. Chrysanthemum in AMFD, AMFA and CON treatments flowered at 98, 104 and 112 days after transplanting, respectively. Fresh weight, width and height of flowers in AMFD and AMFA treatments were generally higher than those in CON. However, a significant increase in fresh weight, width and height of flowers was found in AMFD treatment. A significant increase of macronutrient uptake in leaves was observed for AMFD treatment, compared with CON. Mn uptake in AMFD and AMFA was more than double than that in CON. In roots, macro and micronutrient concentrations were generally higher in AMFD

    Femtosecond two beam and three beam (omega(1),omega(1);omega(2)) four-wave mixing (FWM) experiments on GaAs quantum wells have been performed using two partially synchronized, independently tunable lasers with external jitter compensation. Heavy and light hole beatings are observed with these two mutually incoherent lasers. FWM signals are observed when oz is completely below the exciton energies, with no spectral overlap with the absorption profile. These off-resonant signals are stronger than the interband continuum signals for equivalent detunings

    Adhesion to host tissue represents one of the first steps during the early phase of fungal infections. In order to mediate pathogenesis in the infected host, this process is crucial for colonization and subsequent penetration of the respective tissue. In vivo analyses of the adhesion process in whole organisms are limited because of difficulties in providing reproducible and comparable conditions in the host environment. Therefore, in vitro assays provide the opportunity to study such processes under more defined conditions thus allowing for the analysis of events that are involved in more detail. Here we describe an in vitro adhesion assay making use of human epithelial cell lines to study fungal associations with host epithelia. This assay not only is suited to determine the rate of adhesion in a time-dependent manner but also facilitates global transcriptional profiling in order to determine the fungal response during adhesion at the molecular level
