Birthplace Revisited – a look at Humanity in Nnedi Okorafor
A
As the ultimate birthplace of Humanity, Africa is fertile ground for writings and rewritings of human history. The tragedies and atrocities in its historical path add to the relevance of reflecting on humankind through Africa. Thus, AfroSciFi is playing a pivotal role in 21st century utopian and dystopian thinking. Nigeria in particular has always been at the forefront of African literature, with remarkable contributions including Chinua Achebe and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The second decade of the 21st century welcomed the work of Nigerian-American Nnedi Okorafor as a cosmo/afropolitan, afrofuturistic voice. All three share a highly politicized type of writing and a stern opposition to reductive, dogmatic readings of the world, and of Africa in particular. In fact, all three, in various ways, embrace a hybrid tradition of western(ized) education applied to African exceptionality and often seasoned by the bitter experience of the oppressed. Rejecting “the single story” and all stereotypes, whether friend or foe, is a constant concern in contemporary African fiction. When Nigeria comes to witness the literary work of young Nnedi Okorafor, the possibilities are almost limitless and bringing together African past and future is both feasible and challenging
Over the past two decades, international intervention
in post-war settings has strictly followed liberal
assumptions and practices. Efforts to build and
shape the media in the aftermath of armed conflict
are no exception. In setting the foundations for
the rule of law, liberal democracy and free market,
external actors have (re)defined what constitutes
the mediascape – that is, the various spheres of
communication within public discourse – and how to
(re)construct it. Imprinted with modernity’s tenets
and western assumptions about the public space, this
approach has understood the mediascape narrowly
as limited to traditional, established, liberal media,
serving to validate particular actors and processes
whilst obscuring, neglecting and shutting off global
diversity. Law and technology, this paper argues, are
the two main axes through which legitimation and
exclusion are effected. A myopic focus on legal and
technological aspects of the media reduces a rich
space of local discourses, norms and practices to
western-like media legislation, training and outlets,
narrowing in turn the sites for addressing violence
and building peace.
The place of words in the native language lesson
lexical no sucesso escolar?
This communication aims to situate ourselves in the context of pedagogical and educational
promotion of lexical competence, in the Native Language Lesson. It is of utmost importance
that teachers and educators know the mechanisms through which operates the lexical and
conceptual development and feel encouraged to create class situations that promote this
development. As speakers, children come to know a word by using the word in context,
which means that the lexical richness and accuracy are extremely influenced by the
sociocultural context of the students. Due to the fact that it is strongly determined by the
social environment, the vocabulary aspect should benefit from a teaching by the teacher,
leading to bridging the differences based on social inequalities and cultural of students.
Therefore, it is essential to trace the development of educational purpose lexical
competence of students, giving a central place to the words in the Native Language Lesson,
to overcome the barriers limiting access to disciplinary knowledge and development full of
students. Throughout this communication, we aim to reflect on the following questions: What
is the importance of lexical knowledge in school success? What does knowing a word?
What the Native Language Lesson can do to develop and enhance the lexical competence
of students
Use of concordances in the teaching of homonymy and polysemy
This work, based on Corpus Linguistics and technology-mediated language teaching, aims to
contribute to the knowledge, among Portuguese teachers, of the didactic possibilities that the
applications of Corpus Linguistics can constitute for the teaching-learning of homonymy and of
polysemy. Then, we will approach concepts that Corpus Linguistics contemplates and we will also
present the CINTIL, concordancer that will allow us to obtain concordances of homonymous and
polysemic words. In the last part of this work, we will present concrete examples of the use of
concordances, in view of the teaching-learning of homonymy and polysemy, demonstrating that
teaching through the passive transmission of grammatical knowledge of the language can and
should be replaced by practical activities and problematizing, that develop in the students a critical
and reflexive attitude about the real linguistic functioning.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Centrosomes in Branching Morphogenesis
The centrosome, a major microtubule organizer, has important functions in regulating the cytoskeleton as well as the position of cellular structures and orientation of cells within tissues. The centrosome serves as the main cytoskeleton-organizing centre in the cell and is the classical site of microtubule nucleation and anchoring. For these reasons, centrosomes play a very important role in morphogenesis, not just in the early stages of cell divisions but also in the later stages of organogenesis. Many organs such as lung, kidney and blood vessels develop from epithelial tubes that branch into complex networks. Cells in the nervous system also form highly branched structures in order to build complex neuronal networks. During branching morphogenesis, cells have to rearrange within tissues though multicellular branching or through subcellular branching, also known as single-cell branching. For highly branched structures to be formed during embryonic development, the cytoskeleton needs to be extensively remodelled. The centrosome has been shown to play an important role during these events
Financial reporting about investment properties: evidence from Portuguese listed companies
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and EconomicsCompanies are increasing their investment properties; however they are not disclosing the information that is required by the IAS 40. It regulates the financial reporting of those assets, it defines the scope and the models that companies may use when measuring their investments properties. This research provides insights to understand which model the companies choose (fair value or the cost model) and why. The findings suggest that the Portuguese listed companies do not provide satisfying information about investment properties, as increases the financial leverage or the age of a company, it is more likely to adopt the fair value model
The role of endocannabinoids in classical eyelid conditioning
Tese de mestrado, Neurociências, Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de Lisboa, 2014Studying simple forms of learning, such as conditioned behaviors, is a useful approach to investigate the role of the plasticity mechanisms that underlie these processes.
Classical conditioning of the eyelid is a form of associative learning that is based on the ability of mice to condition their eyelid responses to an initially neutral stimulus (Boele et al. 2010; Kandel et al. 2000).
This behavior has been described to relay on an intact cerebellum (Chen et al. 1996; McCormick et al. 1981; McCormick & Thompson 1984), and its neural correlates have been studied extensively ever since. To date, some synapses within the cerebellar circuit have already been linked to specific features of the eyeblink conditioning (Carey & Lisberger 2002). Endocannabinoids - retrograde neuromodulators, that are present throughout the brain (El Manira & Kyriakatos 2010) – have recently been implicated in different forms of plasticity at the cerebellum, particularly type 1 endocannabinoid receptors (CB1R) (Carey et al. 2011). These receptors are also required for a normal performance of the cerebellumdependent eyeblink conditioning behavior (Kishimoto & Kano 2006). In the present research work, which was motivated by the findings described above, we tried to understand which features of the eyeblink conditioning – such as the percentage, amplitude, and timing of the conditioned response - were being modulated by CB1R signaling and in what way.
Additionally we wanted to understand specifically in which cell types were these receptors exerting their effects in eyeblink conditioning. The results show that mice lacking CB1R’s, both globally and in granule cells, have an impaired performance in cerebellum dependent eyeblink conditioning, with greater effects observed in global CB1 KO mice. These impairments were observed both in terms of the percentage and amplitude of CR’s, but no differences were detected in terms of the timing of these responses, when in comparision to the control groups.
