The effect of sub-antimicrobial dose-doxycycline periodontal therapy on serum inflammatory biomarker C-reactive protein levels in post-menopausal Women: A 2-year, double-blinded, randomized clinical trial

    No full text
Background: Periodontitis has been reported to be associated with coronary artery disease. Research is needed to determine whether therapies that improve periodontal health also reduce systemic marker of inflammation associated with both diseases. Aim: To determine whether sub-antimicrobial dose-doxycycline (SDD) therapy can reduce systemic serum inflammatory biomarker C-reactive protein (CRP) in post-menopausal women who have chronic periodontitis. Settings and Design: The study randomly assigned 128 eligible post-menopausal women with chronic periodontitis to a 90-day, twice-daily regimen of SDD or placebo tablets evaluated for 2 years, as an adjunct to periodontal maintenance therapy. Materials and Methods: The study assayed blood samples for inflammatory mediators at baseline, 1 year, and 2 years. CRP was measured using a high-sensitivity enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: SDD treatment reduced median high-sensitivity CRP by 18% (primary outcome = 0.02). Conclusion: Ninety-day SDD regimen in post-menopausal women significantly reduced the serum inflammatory biomarker CRP over a 2-year period

Background: Dental implants use has significantly increased and the concentration of metal ions into blood may have detrimental effect of human body. The present study aimed to determine metal ions levels in blood of dental implants patients. Materials and Methods: 48 patients scheduled for dental implant surgery was assessed for measurement of titanium and aluminum pre-operatively and post-operatively at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year. Results: Out of 48 patients, males were 22 (45.8%), and females were 26 (54.2%). The mean ± SD titanium metal levels in blood pre-operatively was 2.34 ± 0.47 mg/dl, at 6 weeks was 2.35 ± 0.48 mg/dl, at 3 months was 2.37 ± 0.52 mg/dl, at 6 months was 2.37 ± 0.42 mg/dl, and at 1 year was 2.38 ± 0.51 mg/dl. A non-significant difference was seen (P > 0.05). The mean ± SD aluminum metal levels in blood pre-operatively was 4.4 ± 0.12 mg/dl, at 6 weeks was 4.45 ± 0.14 mg/dl, at 3 months was 4.7 ± 0.13 mg/dl, at 6 months was 4.7 ± 0.21 mg/dl, and at 1 year was 4.8 ± 0.17 mg/dl. A non-significant difference was seen (P > 0.05). Conclusion: A non- significant increase in titanium and aluminum ions level in blood of patients receiving dental implants was observed

Comparative evaluation of efficacy of subgingivally delivered simvastatin and placebo gel in the treatment of stage ii periodontitis as an adjunct to scaling and root planing and its effect on porphyromonas gingivalis : A clinico-microbiological study

Aim: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of subgingivally delivered SMV and Placebo gel and compare in the treatment of stage II periodontitis when used as an adjunct to SRP and their antimicrobial effect on the Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria. Materials & Methods: In a split mouth study design, 10 systemically healthy patients with stage II periodontitis were included in this study based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Two sites with deepest pockets were selected. Plaque samples were collected from these pockets at baseline followed by full mouth scaling and root planning, In Group I 1,2% SMV gel and in Group II Placebo gel was placed in the subgingival pockets. Microbiological analysis for Colony Forming Units of P.g was done at baseline after 3 months, Clinical parameters (GI, PI, PD, CAL, mSBI) were evaluated at baseline (before SRP), 1 month and 3 months. Result: Both the groups showed significant reduction in GI, PI, PD, CAL, mSBI and CFU of Pg but Group I showed more significant reduction than Group II

Elucidating the effects on polyphenol oxidase activity and allelic variation of polyphenol oxidase genes on dough and whole wheat-derived product color parameters

ABSTRACTPolyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity is a primary cause of the development of unattractive dark brown discoloration of wheat-based end products. The present study aims to evaluate a set of 41 diverse wheat genotypes grown at three different locations in India for grain phenol color reaction, PPO activity and molecular marker-based characterization of alleles of PPO genes. Relationships among these parameters were analyzed along with the effects of grain PPO activity on dough and chapati color at different time intervals. The mean PPO activity ranged from 7.42 to 27.57 min−1 g−1 10−3 among the genotypes and it showed a significant negative correlation with color brightness (L*) of dough rested for 0 min (r = -0.406), 15 min (r = -0.406), 2 h (r = -0.502) and 4 h (r = -0.551) and whole wheat flour-derived chapati rested for 2 h (r = -0.267) and 4 h (r = -0.424). The overall quality color score was negatively correlated with PPO activity (r = -0.863) and showed a positive correlation with both dough and chapati visual color measured at different time intervals. PPO activity in the genotypes carrying different alleles was found to be Ppo-A1a>Ppo-A1b; Ppo-B2d>Ppo-B2a; and Ppo-D1b>Ppo-D1a. The allelic constitution Ppo-A1bPpo-B2aPpo-D1a and Ppo-A1bPpo-B2dPpo-D1 was found to produce the lowest PPO activity, and thus these alleles are recommended to be used in marker assisted breeding for low PPO activity genotypes to minimize the discoloration of wheat-based end-products
