ABSTRACT: This paper reflects part of a broader investigation on the
development of methodologies to identify, value and manage design
capabilities in order to create a sustainable competitive advantage. With
the automotive industry and smaller supplier Portuguese companies as
background, this paper explores the resource-based view theory (RBV)
and the dynamic capabilities theory as a theoretical construct for a
further development of research tools.
In the automotive industry, OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers)
continue to control the overall design of the vehicle, as part of the ability
to manage the offer portfolio and brand communication. However, the
industry have been moving towards an increasing participation of smaller
suppliers in product development processes, pushed towards capabilities’
development as a requirement to continue competitive in the OEM’s
suppliers network.
The role of design and design management capabilities have been
explored as strategic resources or core competencies. However, Design is
not typically found in smaller supplier firms as resource (as opposed to
Design studios in larger companies) but found as a process in resourcecapability
combinations, establishing the need for a new research
approach. Therefore, the RBV is a tool to value the design process as a
sustained competitive advantage. The RBV conceptualizes a framework
to determine or identify the strategic resources available or needed
within a company. At these lenses, the basis for a sustainable competitive
advantage lies in the application of the bundle of valuable resources
identified and at the firm's disposal and the combinations with its
No entanto, o
Advantages of using user experience design concepts in the creation of e-learning courses
Trabalho de Projeto de Mestrado, Educação (Área de Especialidade em Educação e Tecnologias Digitais), Universidade de Lisboa, Instituto de Educação, 2021This work focuses on the advantages of the application of User Experience Design concepts
in the creation of e-learning courses showing how Instructional Designers can benefit from
its application to improve the learning experience by following some of the rules and
conventions for good website design. It starts by covering the definition of the term User
Experience Design providing background information about the authors who have
popularised the term, explaining its association with Usability, going through the advantages
of applying it to e-learning courses, and ending with a practical application of the concepts.
The practical component of the work lays on the assessment of a course to identify the
elements that can be improved following the User Experience Design concepts found in the
literature review and the application of those same concepts to a makeover of the original
course that then allows the comparison of the two versions. Several elements in the original
version were identified as needing improvement: blank space, lack of visual elements,
navigation, clickable items, placement of the logo, responsiveness to different screens, and
aesthetics.
The course makeover was built using the authoring software Articulate Storyline that allowed
the development of a version that promotes a better experience to the learner by reallocating
some items, enhancing fonts and buttons, making it adjustable to different screen types, and
modernising its layout.
This work tries to prove that Instructional Designers can certainly benefit from applying User
Experience Design concepts to help them identify some issues that otherwise could not be
easily detected by simply following Instructional Design models.
websites.
ambas as versões.
responsividade do conteúdo a diferentes ecrãs e estética geral.
do layout.

We provide a key to Mastinocerinae genera with 11 antennomeres, as well as illustrations for the diagnostic features for this new genus and a key to its species
Novel enzymes for the agro-food industries
Dissertação de mestrado em Bioquímica Aplicada (especialização em Biomedicina)Enzymes are biological catalysts that accelerate the rate of chemical reactions in cells and are
commonly used in a range of industries. They can improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness and
environmental impact of many processes and enhance the characteristics and quality of products. New
enzymes with novel backbone sequences and novel functions and characteristics are constantly called
for. In the present project, 116 yeasts from mainly acidic pH biowastes, 11 aquatic filamentous fungi
from cold environments in Portugal and Iceland, 3 bacterial isolates and 3 metagenomic clones from
Irish soil samples were screened for the production of glycoside hydrolase enzymes of industrial
interest, namely xylanases, cellulases, pectinases and chitinases.
Methods were investigated and developed for a simplified screening of the various isolates at 16 ºC,
pHs 4, 7 and 9, with, in particular, the development of a novel xylanase substrate. The substrate was
shown to be suitable for measurement of xylanase activity with the commonly used DNS assay but
further tests with other xylanases are recommended to confirm this. Furthermore, the substrate was
successfully coupled with remazol brilliant blue (RBB) dye, obtaining a chromogenic substrate and
enabling a highly sensitive and efficient plate based screening of xylanases.
Screening of the CBMA culture collection isolates allowed for identification of a large number of
glycoside hydrolase positive isolates, with 31 isolates showing desired activities exclusively at acidic pH.
These enzymes may be of interest for use in various applications and, in particular, in food and
beverages applications. In addition, 5 isolates were found to display all 4 activities screened for at pH
4, and these isolates may have potential for use in biomass treatment applications. A cellulase positive
metagenomic clone with metagenomic DNA from Irish soil was selected for further analysis. The gene
for this cellulase was successfully amplified and digested with restriction enzymes but attempts at
ligation in an expression vector and transformation to an E. coli expression host proved unsuccessful
within the time scope of the project. Further studies should be focused on overexpressing and
characterising this novel enzyme.
do produto.
exclusivamente a pH acídico.
do projeto.
IgA dominant glomerulonephritis associated to staphylococcus infection: a peculiar case report
IgA dominant glomerulonephritis associated to Staphylococcus infection is a rare clinical entity that has been described mainly in case reports. Biopsy features can resemble other disease entities mainly IgA nephropathy and Henoch‑Schönlein purpura nephritis. Treatment of IgA dominant glomerulonephritis associated to staphylococcal infection is based on antibiotics for the underlying infection, controlling hypertension and edema and may resort to concomitant use of steroids in selected cases. Prognosis markers such as hypertension, diabetes and interstitial fibrosis may influence treatment as they are associated with poor renal outcomes. We report a case of a 63‑year‑old man with
known hypertension, pre‑diabetes and recent history of methicillin‐sensitive staphylococcus aureus bacteremia associated to prostatitis, who presented with a one‑month history of edema, arthralgia and foamy urine. Over this period he progressed to anasarca and nephrotic range proteinuria with concomitant rise in creatinine levels being documented. The renal biopsy showed segmental endocapillary proliferation and IgA segmental dominant staining associated to C3 and lambda in minor distribution. On completion of two months of steroid therapy the patient partially recovered his renal function and proteinuria. After nine months of tapering steroids, he presented with acute inflammatory arthritis supporting an inflammatory background disease. To our knowledge this case describes an unusual entity such as IgA dominant glomerulonephritis associated to staphylococcal infection co‑presenting with an associated reactive arthritis.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Analysis of processing methods for combustion pressure measurement in a diesel engine
This paper analyzes combustion chamber pressure data processing methods related to the number of cycles averaged, top dead center referencing and pressure referencing (pegging). A total of 1000 consecutive engine cycles were measured in a four-cylinder diesel engine. The number of cycles that minimizes the influence of cycle-to-cycle oscillations depends on engine operating conditions and the parameters under analysis. The top dead center (TDC) referencing, using the motored curve, revealed that the thermodynamic loss shifts the peak pressure − 0.4 °CA from TDC. Four pegging methods were compared—least-squares, fixed-point, three-point and two-point—introducing as main novelty the fact they have not been previously investigated on the same baseline conditions. The least-squares based method showed the lowest sensitivity to random noise, but with longer processing time, and the fixed-point method presented higher dispersion in the heat release analysis. The three-point referencing method considers a variable polytropic coefficient, but suffers from noise sensitivity, and the two-point referencing method presented close values and higher dispersion in comparison with the least-squares method. The choice of which method to use depends on the type of analysis, signal quality and processing time available

Implementing Privacy-Preserving and Collaborative Industrial Artificial Intelligence
Publisher Copyright:
© 2013 IEEE.Despite the growing connectivity and availability of sensor data boosted by the Industry 4.0 paradigm, data scarcity remains one of the biggest challenges for the widespread adoption of industrial AI, particularly regarding failure or defect data required for automated quality inspection solutions. Data sharing among different stakeholders is difficult due to data privacy, ownership, and cybersecurity concerns. Traditional centralized Machine Learning is already an essential part of several sectors, including smart manufacturing; however, it may lead to several issues regarding security and performance over time. In response to these problems, federated learning can be seen as a potential catalyst and enabler for the adoption of collaborative industrial artificial intelligence. It is an innovative and decentralized approach to machine learning, focused on collaboration and data privacy, shifting the information flow from the data to the models. Although considerable research efforts have been put forth towards this topic, there are still many unresolved issues concerning the application of federated learning approaches in smart manufacturing scenarios, including the lack of a common holistic reference framework and implementation. In this light, the present work aims to provide the foundation for a common framework for collaborative Industrial AI in smart manufacturing, addressing not only the collaboration aspect but also the main challenges of data privacy, ownership, and security. Additionally, we present and make publicly available a curated dataset focused on a manufacturing quality inspection scenario to further promote research on this topic.publishersversionpublishe
Teaching activity with ICT: perspectives on a regular high school in Bahia
The teachers of today are inserted in a technological era that provokes them to review their methodological practices. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) is an instrument, although it is not a recent issue. But it is able to offer learners new possibilities for learning. The teacher is based on mastering this tool. The teaching units together with the public managers must subsidize with adequate infrastructure in both hardware, software, internet, applications as well as continuous training. However, many teachers, even though they have received adequate knowledge to deal with the interactive media in the classroom and thus convey new meaning to teach, tend to remain with the old models of teaching and learning. The students are against it. The aim was to understand the apathy, incompleteness or frustration regarding the use of technological media in the classroom of a public high school in the city of Senhor do Bonfim-BA. The research was conducted, preferably, on the night shift, in June, through a questionnaire applied to 18 teachers (100% of the sample). In order to answer the problem: Is teaching time a factor that contributes to the non-use of ICTs in school? The results showed that most of the faculty has more than 20 years of teaching. Another important factor was the infrastructure still to be desired, and both the handsets and the network connectivity are not satisfactory. The data show that the teaching time is a negative factor, considering that they are not teachers who were born of the technological culture
