Preconditioned Algorithm for Difference of Convex Functions with applications to Graph Ginzburg-Landau Model
In this work, we propose and study a preconditioned framework with a graphic
Ginzburg-Landau functional for image segmentation and data clustering by
parallel computing. Solving nonlocal models is usually challenging due to the
huge computation burden. For the nonconvex and nonlocal variational functional,
we propose several damped Jacobi and generalized Richardson preconditioners for
the large-scale linear systems within a difference of convex functions
algorithms framework. They are efficient for parallel computing with GPU and
can leverage the computational cost. Our framework also provides flexible step
sizes with a global convergence guarantee. Numerical experiments show the
proposed algorithms are very competitive compared to the singular value
decomposition based spectral method
A Survey on Global LiDAR Localization
Knowledge about the own pose is key for all mobile robot applications. Thus
pose estimation is part of the core functionalities of mobile robots. In the
last two decades, LiDAR scanners have become a standard sensor for robot
localization and mapping. This article surveys recent progress and advances in
LiDAR-based global localization. We start with the problem formulation and
explore the application scope. We then present the methodology review covering
various global localization topics, such as maps, descriptor extraction, and
consistency checks. The contents are organized under three themes. The first is
the combination of global place retrieval and local pose estimation. Then the
second theme is upgrading single-shot measurement to sequential ones for
sequential global localization. The third theme is extending single-robot
global localization to cross-robot localization on multi-robot systems. We end
this survey with a discussion of open challenges and promising directions on
global lidar localization
Identification of a laccase Glac15 from Ganoderma lucidum 77002 and its application in bioethanol production
Background Laccases have potential applications in detoxification of lignocellulosic biomass after thermochemical pretreatment and production of value-added products or biofuels from renewable biomass. However, their application in large-scale industrial and environmental processes has been severely thwarted by the high cost of commercial laccases. Therefore, it is necessary to identify new laccases with lower cost but higher activity to detoxify lignocellulosic hydrolysates and better efficiency to produce biofuels such as bioethanol. Laccases from Ganoderma lucidum represent proper candidates in processing of lignocellulosic biomass. Results G. lucidum 77002 produces three laccase isoenzymes with a total laccase activity of 141.1 U/mL within 6 days when using wheat bran and peanut powder as energy sources in liquid culture medium. A new isoenzyme named Glac15 was identified, purified, and characterized. Glac15 possesses an optimum pH of 4.5 to 5.0 and a temperature range of 45°C to 55°C for the substrates tested. It was stable at pH values ranging from 5.0 to 7.0 and temperatures lower than 55°C, with more than 80% activity retained after incubation for 2 h. When used in bioethanol production process, 0.05 U/mL Glac15 removed 84% of the phenolic compounds in prehydrolysate, and the yeast biomass reached 11.81 (optimal density at 600 nm (OD600)), compared to no growth in the untreated one. Addition of Glac15 before cellulase hydrolysis had no significant effect on glucose recovery. However, ethanol yield were improved in samples treated with laccases compared to that in control samples. The final ethanol concentration of 9.74, 10.05, 10.11, and 10.81 g/L were obtained from samples containing only solid content, solid content treated with Glac15, solid content containing 50% prehydrolysate, and solid content containing 50% prehydrolysate treated with Glac15, respectively. Conclusions The G. lucidum laccase Glac15 has potentials in bioethanol production industry
Solution Structure of Tensin2 SH2 Domain and Its Phosphotyrosine-Independent Interaction with DLC-1
Background: Src homology 2 (SH2) domain is a conserved module involved in various biological processes. Tensin family member was reported to be involved in tumor suppression by interacting with DLC-1 (deleted-in-liver-cancer-1) via its SH2 domain. We explore here the important questions that what the structure of tensin2 SH2 domain is, and how it binds to DLC-1, which might reveal a novel binding mode. Principal Findings: Tensin2 SH2 domain adopts a conserved SH2 fold that mainly consists of five b-strands flanked by two a-helices. Most SH2 domains recognize phosphorylated ligands specifically. However, tensin2 SH2 domain was identified to interact with nonphosphorylated ligand (DLC-1) as well as phosphorylated ligand. Conclusions: We determined the solution structure of tensin2 SH2 domain using NMR spectroscopy, and revealed the interactions between tensin2 SH2 domain and its ligands in a phosphotyrosine-independent manner

Ni-based bimetallic heterogeneous catalysts for energy and environmental applications
Bimetallic catalysts have attracted extensive attention for a wide range of applications in energy production and environmental remediation due to their tunable chemical/physical properties. These properties are mainly governed by a number of parameters such as compositions of the bimetallic systems, their preparation method, and their morphostructure. In this regard, numerous efforts have been made to develop “designer” bimetallic catalysts with specific nanostructures and surface properties as a result of recent advances in the area of materials chemistry. The present review highlights a detailed overview of the development of nickel-based bimetallic catalysts for energy and environmental applications. Starting from a materials science perspective in order to obtain controlled morphologies and surface properties, with a focus on the fundamental understanding of these bimetallic systems to make a correlation with their catalytic behaviors, a detailed account is provided on the utilization of these systems in the catalytic reactions related to energy production and environmental remediation. We include the entire library of nickel-based bimetallic catalysts for both chemical and electrochemical processes such as catalytic reforming, dehydrogenation, hydrogenation, electrocatalysis and many other reactions
Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data
THE INTRINSIC FATIGUE THRESHOLD OF 25CR2NI2MOV STEEL
Fatigue crack growth tests of 25 Cr2 Ni2 MoV steel with two different heat treatments(550℃× 20 h,580℃× 20 h) were conducted at stress ratios R of 0.1,0.3,0.5 and 0.7,and the fatigue threshold,△Kth,and microscopic mechanism were investigated. Results showed that △Kth increased with the decrease of R,and the heat treatment had varied effects on △Kthunder lower R,while it had less effect under higher R.Fracture morphology observation showed that there existed a large number of facet morphology under lower R,while the facet morphology was gradually reduced with the increase of R.Additionally, the percentage of facet morphology followed a parabolic pattern with △K.It is indicated that R and heat treatment are important influencing factors on △Kth.The crack growth at higher R has weak effect of crack closure, representing the fatigue resistance of the material, and thus can be regarded as the intrinsic property of the material which can be estimated by the proposed model
