    Get PDF
In the present work, the immobilization of catalase into natural active carbon and active carbon modified by hydrochloric acid was carried out. In the experimental section, the effects of pH, ionic strength andreaction temperature were chosen as parameters, with experiments performed in batch system. For the optimization of immobilization procedure, values of kinetic parameters were evaluated. It was observedthat storage and operational stabilities of the enzyme increased with immobilization. The results obtained from experiments showed that active carbon is a valuable support for the adsorption of enzymes

Spontaneous Emergence of Persistent Spin Helix from Homogeneous Spin Polarization

We demonstrate that a homogeneous spin polarization in one-dimensional structures of finite length in the presence of Bychkov-Rashba spin-orbit coupling decays spontaneously toward a persistent spin helix. The analysis of formation of spin helical state is presented within a novel approach based on a mapping of spin drift-diffusion equations into a heat equation for a complex field. Such a strikingly different and simple method allows generating robust spin structures whose properties can be tuned by the strength of the spin orbit interaction and/or structure's length. We generalize our results for two-dimensional case predicting formation of persistent spin helix in two-dimensional channels from homogeneous spin polarization

    A New Method of Probing the Phonon Mechanism in Superconductors including MgB2_{2}

Weak localization has a strong influence on both the normal and superconducting properties of metals. In particular, since weak localization leads to the decoupling of electrons and phonons, the temperature dependence of resistance (i.e., λtr\lambda_{tr}) is decreasing with increasing disorder, as manifested by Mooij's empirical rule. In addition, Testardi's universal correlation of TcT_{c} (i.e., λ\lambda) and the resistance ratio (i.e., λtr\lambda_{tr}) follows. This understanding provides a new means to probe the phonon mechanism in superconductors including MgB2_{2}. The merits of this method are its applicability to any superconductors and its reliability because the McMillan's electron-phonon coupling constant λ\lambda and λtr\lambda_{tr} change in a broad range, from finite values to zero, due to weak localization. Karkin et al's preliminary data of irradiated MgB2_{2} show the Testardi correlation, indicating that the dominant pairing mechanism in MgB2_{2} is the phonon-mediated interaction.Comment: 9 pages, latex, 3 figure

Weak localization and the Mooij rule in disordered metals

    Get PDF
Weak localization leads to the same correction to both the conductivity and the McMillan's electron-phonon coupling constant λ (and λtr, transport electron-phonon coupling constant). Consequently the temperature dependence of the thermal electrical resistivity is decreasing as the conductivity is decreasing due to weak localization, which results in the decrease of the temperature coefficient of resistivity (TCR) with increasing the residual resistivity. When λ and λtr are approaching zero, only the residual resistivity part remains and it gives rise to the negative TCR. Accordingly, the Mooij rule is a manifestation of weak localization correction to the conductivity and the electron-phonon interaction. This understanding provides a new means of probing the phonon-mechanism in exotic superconductors and an opportunity of fabricating new novel devices

Parity assignments in 172,174Yb using polarized photons and the K quantum number in rare earth nuclei

The 100 % polarized photon beam at the High Intensity gamma-ray Source (HIgS) at Duke University has been used to determine the parity of six dipole excitations between 2.9 and 3.6 MeV in the deformed nuclei 172,174 Yb in photon scattering (g,g') experiments. The measured parities are compared with previous assignments based on the K quantum number that had been assigned in Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence (NRF) experiments by using the Alaga rules. A systematic survey of the relation between gamma-decay branching ratios and parity quantum numbers is given for the rare earth nuclei.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.

Isoscalar dipole coherence at low energies and forbidden E1 strength

In 16O and 40Ca an isoscalar, low-energy dipole transition (IS-LED) exhausting approximately 4% of the isoscalar dipole (ISD) energy-weighted sum rule is experimentally known, but conspicuously absent from recent theoretical investigations of ISD strength. The IS-LED mode coincides with the so-called isospin-forbidden E1 transition. We report that for N=Z nuclei up to 100Sn the fully self-consistent Random-Phase-Approximation with finite-range forces, phenomenological and realistic, yields a collective IS-LED mode, typically overestimating its excitation energy, but correctly describing its IS strength and electroexcitation form factor. The presence of E1 strength is solely due to the Coulomb interaction between the protons and the resulting isospin-symmetry breaking. The smallness of its value is related to the form of the transition density, due to translational invariance. The calculated values of E1 and ISD strength carried by the IS-LED depend on the effective interaction used. Attention is drawn to the possibility that in N-not-equal-Z nuclei this distinct mode of IS surface vibration can develop as such or mix strongly with skin modes and thus influence the pygmy dipole strength as well as the ISD strength function. In general, theoretical models currently in use may be unfit to predict its precise position and strength, if at all its existence.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, EPJA submitte

Approaching the Gamow Window with Stored Ions : Direct Measurement of Xe 124 (p,γ) in the ESR Storage Ring

© 2019 American Physical Society. All rights reserved. We report the first measurement of low-energy proton-capture cross sections of Xe124 in a heavy-ion storage ring. Xe12454+ ions of five different beam energies between 5.5 and 8 AMeV were stored to collide with a windowless hydrogen target. The Cs125 reaction products were directly detected. The interaction energies are located on the high energy tail of the Gamow window for hot, explosive scenarios such as supernovae and x-ray binaries. The results serve as an important test of predicted astrophysical reaction rates in this mass range. Good agreement in the prediction of the astrophysically important proton width at low energy is found, with only a 30% difference between measurement and theory. Larger deviations are found above the neutron emission threshold, where also neutron and γ widths significantly impact the cross sections. The newly established experimental method is a very powerful tool to investigate nuclear reactions on rare ion beams at low center-of-mass energies.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

Automatic Wrinkle Detection Using Hybrid Hessian Filter

    Get PDF
Aging as a natural phenomenon affects different parts of the human body under the influence of various biological and environmental factors. The most pronounced changes that occur on the face is the appearance of wrinkles, which are the focus of this research. Accurate wrinkle detection is an important task in face analysis. Some have been proposed in the literature, but the poor localization limits the performance of wrinkle detection. It will lead to false wrinkle detection and consequently affect the processes such as age estimation and clinician score assessment. Therefore, we propose a hybrid Hessian filter (HHF) to cope with the identified problem. HHF is composed of the directional gradient and Hessian matrix. The proposed filter is conceptually simple, however, it significantly increases the true wrinkle localization when compared with the conventional methods. In the experimental setup, three coders have been instructed to annotate the wrinkle of 2D forehead image manually. The inter-reliability among three coders is 93 % of Jaccard similarity index (JSI). In comparison to the state-of-the-art Cula method (CLM) and Frangi filter, HHF yielded the best result with a mean JSI of 75.67 %. We noticed that the proposed method is capable of detecting the medium to coarse wrinkle but not the fine wrinkle. Although there is a gap between human annotation and automated detection, this work demonstrates that HHF is a remarkably strong filter for wrinkle detection. From the experimental results, we believe that our findings are notable in terms of the JSI

Recent advances in nanotechnology have enabled the development of nanoscale sensors that outperform conventional biosensors. This review summarizes the nanoscale biosensors that use aptamers as molecular recognition elements. The advantages of aptamers over antibodies as sensors are highlighted. These advantages are especially apparent with electrical sensors such as electrochemical sensors or those using field-effect transistors

Fragmentation of single-particle strength around the doubly-magic nucleus 132Sn and the position of the 0f5/2 proton-hole state in 131In

Spectroscopic factors of neutron-hole and proton-hole states in 131Sn and 131In, respectively, were measured using one-nucleon removal reactions from doubly magic 132Sn at relativistic energies. For 131In, a 2910(50)-keV γ ray was observed for the first time and tentatively assigned to a decay from a 5=2− state at 3275(50) keV to the known 1=2− level at 365 keV. The spectroscopic factors determined for this new excited state and three other single-hole states provide first evidence for a strong fragmentation of singlehole strength in 131Sn and 131In. The experimental results are compared to theoretical calculations based on the relativistic particle-vibration couplin
