The Third Language in English Guidebooks and its Translation into Spanish

This article focuses on a specific feature found in tourist guidebooks –the recurrent use of foreign expressions or “third language”. It presents the findings of a comparative analysis of a parallel corpus made up of twenty guidebooks: ten guidebooks originally written in English and their corresponding translated versions in Spanish, describing different countries and cities (all of them published by Lonely Planet), focusing on those chapters in which the writer includes practical information. The purpose of the study is to analyze the use of the third language in the English and Spanish versions and to determine and identify the translation strategies used by the translators to transfer these linguistic elements from one language to the other. To this aim, a classification of transference strategies is presented, as well as a brief review of the most influential authors who have contributed to this field of study. The results will show the translation tendency regarding the translation of foreign expressions. DOI: 10.1400/22969

¿De quién es la culpa? Las percepciones de los estudiantes respecto al sistema financiero de EE. UU. en una clase de inglés para fines específicos

Critical thinking skills are considered a key component of any teaching-learning process. Specifically, in the English for Specific Purposes class, these are important to enhance language skills. In this sense, audiovisual media can play a fundamental role and can be used for their development. Thus, this study aims to analyze students’ perceptions of the American financial system and its influence on the rest of the world with an activity that was designed using a three-phase methodology. The study is framed in the Financial Translation class in which special attention was also paid to oral as well as critical thinking skills. The Netflix documentary used for this purpose was Dirty Money, which deals with different financial issues related to the US economy and its influence in countries around the world. Results show that activities of this kind can contribute dynamically and engagingly to the development of critical thinking skills while enhancing students’ oral competency and the use of specialized terminology at the same time.El pensamiento crítico se considera un componente clave en cualquier proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje. De forma específica, en la clase de inglés para fines específicos, esto resulta importante para la mejora de la competencia lingüística. En este sentido, los medios audiovisuales pueden ser de gran importancia y utilizarse para su desarrollo. Este estudio tiene como objetivo analizar las percepciones de los estudiantes sobre el sistema financiero estadounidense y su influencia en el resto del mundo con una actividad que fue diseñada utilizando una metodología trifásica. Livros didáticos de Espanhol para turismo: Uma análise FOFA para determinar seu presente e futuro

Sendo o espanhol uma das línguas de estudo mais frequentes, este artigo tem como objetivo analisar, através de um estudo SWOT, os pontos fortes, fracos, oportunidades e ameaças do espanhol em livros didáticos de turismo para determinar seu presente e futuro. Ao fazê-lo, os autores deste manuscrito realizaram um estudo qualitativo e quantitativo. Após uma discussão online com quatro experientes professores de línguas, elaboramos um checklist de observação que contribui para o campo de estudo e pode servir como ferramenta de análise de livros didáticos de línguas. Aplicamos esta lista de verificação de observação para analisar dez livros didáticos de espanhol para turismo. Os resultados mostram que os livros didáticos dessa área se adaptaram às novas realidades do ensino de línguas, mas ainda não incluem elementos importantes para o correto desenvolvimento de todas as habilidades.Being Spanish one of the most frequent languages of study, this paper aims to analyze, through a SWOT study, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of Spanish for tourism textbooks so as to determine their present and future. In doing so, the authors of this manuscript have carried out a qualitative and quantitative study. After an online discussion with four experienced language teachers, we have elaborated an observation checklist that contributes to the field of study and could serve as a tool to analyse language textbooks. We have applied this observation checklist to analyse ten Spanish for tourism textbooks. Results show that textbooks in this field have been adapted to the new realities of language teaching but still fail to include important elements for the correct development of all the skills

Self-criticism of previous corpus-based publications: SWOT analysis

This article aims to reflect and conduct self-criticism of four previous joint publications of the authors that employed the corpus methodology. To this end, the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) methodology is used to, on the one hand, analyze the direction corpus-based translation studies are heading toward, and, on the other, to ascertain what should be maintained, improved, or modified in these types of publications. First, a review of corpus-based studies is carried out with a purely theoretical analysis. Next, the methodology is presented to analyze, from a critical perspective, the four publications of the authors. The authors believe this article will have a two-fold effect on research and education, thus benefiting translation studies.El objetivo de este artículo consiste en reflexionar y hacer autocrítica sobre cuatro publicaciones previas elaboradas conjuntamente por las autoras y en las que se utilizó una metodología de corpus. Para ello, se empleará la metodología DAFO (Debilidades, Amenazas, Fortalezas y Oportunidades), que nos permitirá analizar, por un lado, la dirección hacia la que se dirigen los estudios de traducción basados en corpus y, por otro, lo que sería necesario mantener, mejorar o modificar en las publicaciones de esta tipología. A través de un análisis primeramente teórico, en el que se realizará un recorrido por los estudios basados en corpus, pasaremos a presentar la metodología empleada para analizar, desde un punto de vista crítico, las cuatro publicaciones de las autoras. Consideramos que el presente artículo tendrá un doble efecto a nivel docente e investigador y que por tanto redundará en beneficio de los Estudios de Traducción

Contrastive study of two promotional guides on business tourism (English-Spanish)

A pesar de la existencia de numerosos estudios que se centran en el discurso turístico, el turismo de negocios no ha sido analizado de forma específica en la literatura traductológica existente. No obstante, este tipo de turismo tiene un peso importante en la economía y lleva experimentando un crecimiento continuo desde hace años. El objetivo de este estudio es identificar y describir las estrategias empleadas en la traducción de los elementos léxicos de dos guías promocionales del turismo de negocios en la combinación lingüística español-inglés. En primer lugar, contextualizaremos nuestro objeto de estudio aportando una explicación de lo que se considera turismo de negocios. Posteriormente explicaremos la metodología de corpus empleada para llevar a cabo el análisis de los elementos léxicos de las guías promocionales seleccionadas para el estudio. Esto se hará en base a una tipología de estrategias de transferencia en la que se incluirán los distintos ejemplos extraídos del corpus. Finalmente, reflexionaremos sobre la docencia en este ámbito y la combinación de la traducción especializada y la explotación de corpus, aspectos clave para cumplir con los requisitos del mercado de la traducción. Los resultados obtenidos, de manera preliminar, nos permiten concluir que este tipo de metodología resulta de gran interés no solo desde el punto de vista investigador para el análisis de las diferencias entre el inglés y español en el discurso del turismo de negocios, sino también para facilitar la labor del traductor y la del docente en este ámbito.Despite the existence of numerous studies that focus on tourism discourse, business tourism has not been analyzed specifically in the existing translation literature. However, this type of tourism plays an important role in the economy and has been experiencing continuous growth for years. The aim of this study is to identify and describe the strategies used in the translation of the lexical elements of two promotional guides of business tourism in the language combination Spanish-English. To do this, first we will contextualize our object of study providing an explanation of what is considered business tourism. Then we will explain the corpus methodology used to conduct the analysis of the lexical elements of the promotional guides selected for the study. This will be done according to a typology of transference strategies in which the different examples extracted from the corpus will be included. Finally, we will reflect on how teaching in this field can be approached and the importance of the combination of specialized translation and corpus exploitation, key aspects to meet the requirements of the translation market. The results obtained, although preliminary, allow us to conclude that this type of methodology is of great interest not only from a research perspective to analyze the differences between English and Spanish in the business tourism discourse, but also to facilitate the work of the translator and lecturers in this field of specialization

Compliance or cumplimiento normativo? A corpus study with professional and didactic purposes in the Spanish press

[EN] The aim of this paper is to analyze the use of the term “compliance”, considered one of the most popular topics in the legal-economic field in 2017 and 2018 in the Spanish press to determine whether there is a preference for its use in English, for its translation into Spanish or for both options. A corpus methodology has been used to study the frequency of use of the term in two generalist newspapers (El País and La Vanguardia) and two specialized ones (Expansión and El Economista), during the period between January 2017 and October 2018. The results show a preference for the use of the term in English, although this trend is accentuated in the specialized press in comparison with the general press. From a terminological perspective this analysis helps develop training and the profession of the translator since it is a contribution for the acquisition of the lexical competence necessary for professional translation.[ES] El objetivo de este artículo es analizar el uso del término compliance, considerado uno de los temas de moda en el ámbito jurídico-económico en 2017 y 2018, en la prensa española para determinar si existe una preferencia por su uso en inglés, su traducción al español o ambas opciones. Se ha utilizado una metodología de corpus para estudiar la frecuencia de uso del término en dos periódicos generalistas (El País y La Vanguardia) y otros dos especializados (Expansión y El Economista), durante el periodo comprendido entre enero de 2017 y octubre de 2018. Los resultados muestran una preferencia de uso del término en inglés, aunque esta tendencia se acentúa en la prensa especializada en comparación con la generalista. Master’s Degree on Teaching Training: Thematic Trends on the English Speciality Dissertations

This paper focuses on a thematic analysis of the dissertations of students in the Master's Degree in Teacher Training for Compulsory Secondary Education and Baccalaureate, Vocational Training and Language Teaching of the courses 19/20, 20/21 and part of the course 21/22 in the specialty of the English language in Spain. For this purpose, a mixed research has been carried out, starting with a systematized review of the repositories of Spanish universities. A sample of 607 papers was used to establish seven basic thematic categories, from both an inductive perspective, taking into account previous research, and a deductive one, leaving room for emerging elements. The most recurrent themes refer to the categories of culture, English language skills and projects that focus on the use of innovative methodologies. Likewise, the most frequent thematic combinations have been studied, with culture and inclusion being the one with the highest incidence. The results reveal that the connection of English with the cultural component is still very present today, although the usual presence of innovative elements related to active methodologies or digital tools is observed in these incipient investigations.Este trabajo se centra en el análisis temático de los trabajos finales del Máster Universitario en Formación del Profesorado de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria y Bachillerato, Formación Profesional y Enseñanza de Idiomas de los cursos 19/20, 20/21 y parte del curso 21/22 en la especialidad de lengua inglesa en España. Para ello, se ha llevado a cabo una investigación de carácter mixto, comenzando por una revisión sistematizada de los repositorios de las universidades españolas. Se ha contado con una muestra de 607 trabajos a partir de la que se han establecido siete categorías temáticas básicas, desde una perspectiva tanto inductiva, teniendo en cuenta trabajos previos, como deductiva, dejando espacio para elementos emergentes. Las temáticas más recurrentes hacen referencia a las categorías de cultura, destrezas de la lengua inglesa y trabajos que se centran en el uso de metodologías innovadoras. Igualmente, se han estudiado las combinaciones temáticas más frecuentes, siendo la de cultura e inclusión la que cuenta con una mayor incidencia. Los resultados revelan que la conexión del inglés con el componente cultural sigue muy presente hoy en día, aunque se observa la presencia habitual en estas investigaciones incipientes de elementos innovadores relacionados con las metodologías activas o las herramientas digitales

Primera aproximación a la caracterización de los informes periciales contables (inglés-español) en el ámbito judicial mediante un estudio de corpus

The globalization of markets and the increasing commercial exchange between countries has led to a rise in legal claims due to problems related to fraud. This has made forensic auditing particularly relevant in legal settings, as well as the accounting forensic reports that arise from its activity, which have thus become a regular task in legal-economic translation. For this reason, the aim of this paper is to provide an approach to the characterization of an accounting forensic report by using an ad hoc comparable corpus (English-Spanish) , which will allow us to detail the macrostructure and microstructure of this text and analyze the main terminological units found for this language combination. This will provide specific details on the main characteristics of these documents as a previous step for their translation.La globalización de los mercados y el creciente intercambio comercial entre países han conllevado un aumento de las reclamaciones judiciales debido a problemas relacionados con el fraude. Esto ha hecho que la auditoría forense cobre especial relevancia en el ámbito judicial, así como los informes periciales contables que surgen de su actividad, que se han convertido por tanto en un encargo habitual en traducción jurídico-económica. El objetivo de este artículo es realizar una primera aproximación a la caracterización de un informe pericial contable a través de un estudio de corpus comparable (inglés-español) ad hoc, lo que nos permitirá detallar su macroestructura y microestructura y analizar las principales unidades terminológicas que se encuentran para esta combinación lingüística. Esto permitirá conocer un poco más en detalle las principales características de este tipo de documentos como paso previo a su traducción

La traducción en el ámbito de Arduino : propuesta de glosario inglés-español

The lack of standardized terminology for the many terms that exist when we explain a project that is developed with Arduino can generate ambiguity and lack of clarity and precision. Therefore, the aim of this article is to make a proposal of an English-Spanish glossary, based on a corpus of texts and with the collaboration of translators and telecommunications engineers, to contribute to the terminological standardization in a recently created area that is characterized by its great dynamism. We will provide a reliable and current resource so that translators can work more easily in the translation of texts in this field and at the same time contribute to its terminological standardization with proposals that prevent the expert from using the term directly in English. We consider that any branch of knowledge must have a consolidated terminology so that the exchange of information is effective. In this sense, translators have a very important role to play
