    Mirror symmetric SU(3)-structure manifolds with NS fluxes

    When string theory is compactified on a six-dimensional manifold with a nontrivial NS flux turned on, mirror symmetry exchanges the flux with a purely geometrical composite NS form associated with lack of integrability of the complex structure on the mirror side. Considering a general class of T^3-fibered geometries admitting SU(3) structure, we find an exchange of pure spinors (e^{iJ} and \Omega) in dual geometries under fiberwise T-duality, and study the transformations of the NS flux and the components of intrinsic torsion. A complementary study of action of twisted covariant derivatives on invariant spinors allows to extend our results to generic geometries and formulate a proposal for mirror symmetry in compactifications with NS flux.Comment: 21 pages, LaTe

    Cumulative contexts of vulnerability to intimate partner violence among women with disabilities, elderly women, and immigrant women: Prevalence, risk factors, explanatory theories, and prevention

    Some groups of women are more vulnerable to intimate partner violence (IPV) due to particular risks and/or experiences: women with disabilities, elderly women, and immigrant women (DEI). Too often, their reality goes unnoticed, especially for those belonging to more than one of these groups. In this literature review, researchers used an intersectional approach to document the similarities and differences in how DEI women experience IPV, in terms of forms and consequences, as well as related risk factors, explanatory theories, and prevention strategies. Researchers selected 56 articles for review based on the following inclusion criteria: studies on adults living in a situation of IPV, studies on one of the three demographics under study (DEI), studies about one or multiple research questions, and studies based on empirical data relying on research methodology in either French or English. Researchers evaluated each selected article for its quality according to a chart that was specially developed for this review. The results highlight existing ā€œintersectionsā€ between these groups to help understand the influence of belonging to more than one vulnerability group on these womenā€™s experiences with IPV. The importance to better training social workers and developing policies and programs that target the social determinants of health to prevent IPV experienced by DEI is also discussed

    Randomized, Controlled Trial of the Long Term Safety, Immunogenicity and Efficacy of RTS,S/AS02(D) Malaria Vaccine in Infants Living in a Malaria-Endemic Region.

    The RTS,S/AS malaria candidate vaccine is being developed with the intent to be delivered, if approved, through the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) of the World Health Organization. Safety, immunogenicity and efficacy of the RTS,S/AS02(D) vaccine candidate when integrated into a standard EPI schedule for infants have been reported over a nine-month surveillance period. This paper describes results following 20 months of follow up. This Phase IIb, single-centre, randomized controlled trial enrolled 340 infants in Tanzania to receive three doses of RTS,S/AS02(D) or hepatitis B vaccine at 8, 12, and 16 weeks of age. All infants also received DTPw/Hib (diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, whole-cell pertussis vaccine, conjugated Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine) at the same timepoints. The study was double-blinded to month 9 and single-blinded from months 9 to 20. From month 0 to 20, at least one SAE was reported in 57/170 infants who received RTS,S/AS02(D) (33.5%; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 26.5, 41.2) and 62/170 infants who received hepatitis B vaccine (36.5%; 95% CI: 29.2, 44.2). The SAE profile was similar in both vaccine groups; none were considered to be related to vaccination. At month 20, 18ā€‰months after completion of vaccination, 71.8% of recipients of RTS,S/AS02(D) and 3.8% of recipients of hepatitis B vaccine had seropositive titres for anti-CS antibodies; seroprotective levels of anti-HBs antibodies remained in 100% of recipients of RTS,S/AS02(D) and 97.7% recipients of hepatitis B vaccine. Anti-HBs antibody GMTs were higher in the RTS,S/AS02(D) group at all post-vaccination time points compared to control. According to protocol population, vaccine efficacy against multiple episodes of malaria disease was 50.7% (95% CI: -6.5 to 77.1, pā€‰=ā€‰0.072) and 26.7% (95% CI: -33.1 to 59.6, pā€‰=ā€‰0.307) over 12 and 18ā€‰months post vaccination, respectively. In the Intention to Treat population, over the 20-month follow up, vaccine efficacy against multiple episodes of malaria disease was 14.4% (95% CI: -41.9 to 48.4, pā€‰=ā€‰0.545). The acceptable safety profile and good tolerability of RTS,S/AS02(D) in combination with EPI vaccines previously reported from month 0 to 9 was confirmed over a 20ā€‰month surveillance period in this infant population. Antibodies against both CS and HBsAg in the RTS,S/AS02(D) group remained significantly higher compared to control for the study duration. Over 18ā€‰months follow up, RTS,S/AS02(D) prevented approximately a quarter of malaria cases in the study population. CLINICAL TRIALS: Gov identifier: NCT00289185

    Patient-Specific 3D Scanned and 3D Printed Antimicrobial Polycaprolactone Wound Dressings

    The increasing prevalence of wound infections caused by antibiotic resistant bacteria is an urgent challenge facing modern medicine. To address this issue the expedient use of antimicrobial metals such as zinc, copper and silver were incorporated into an FDA-approved polymer (polycaprolactone - PCL) to produce filaments for 3D printing. These metals have broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties, and moreover, copper and zinc can enhance the wound healing process. 3D scanning was used to construct 3D models of a nose and ear to provide the opportunity to customize shape and size of a wound dressing to an individual patient. Hot melt extrusion was used to extrude pellets obtained by vacuum-drying of solutions of PCL and the different metals in order to manufacture metal-homogeneously-loaded filaments. Wound dressings with different shapes were produced with the filaments containing different concentrations of metals. Release of the metals from the dressings was determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. All the different metal dressings show fast release (up to 24h) followed by slow release (up to 72h). The antibacterial efficacy of the wound dressings was tested using a thermal activity monitor system, revealing that silver and copper wound dressings had the most potent bactericidal properties. This study shows that 3D scanning and 3D printing, which are becoming simpler and more affordable, have the potential to offer solutions to produce personalised wound dressings

    Studies on the anti-obesity activity of zinc-Ī±2-glycoprotein in the rat

    OBJECTIVE: To investigate the anti-obesity effect of the adipokine zinc-a(2)-glycoprotein (ZAG) in rats and the mechanism of this effect. SUBJECTS: Mature male Wistar rats (540 Ā± 83 g) were administered human recombinant ZAG (50 Āµg per 100 g body weight given intravenously daily) for 10 days, while control animals received an equal volume of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). RESULTS: Animals treated with ZAG showed a progressive decrease in body weight, without a decrease in food and water intake, but with a 0.4 Ā°C rise in body temperature. Body composition analysis showed loss of adipose tissue, but an increase in lean body mass. The loss of fat was due to an increase in lipolysis as shown by a 50% elevation of plasma glycerol, accompanied by increased utilization of non-esterified fatty acids, as evidenced by the 55% decrease in plasma levels. Plasma levels of glucose and triglycerides were also reduced by 36-37% and there was increased expression of the glucose transporter 4 in both skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. Expression of the lipolytic enzymes adipose triglyceride lipase and hormone-sensitive lipase in the white adipose tissue (WAT) were increased twofold after ZAG administration. There was almost a twofold increased expression of uncoupling proteins 1 and 3 in brown adipose tissue and WAT, which would contribute to increased substrate utilization. Administration of ZAG increased ZAG expression twofold in the gastrocnemius muscle, BAT and WAT, which was probably necessary for its biological effect. Furthermore, elaboration of the DCzp core is possible with the introduction of pendant carbazole derivative groups. This provides a way to tune the optoelectronic properties of the thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) compounds DCzpTRZtBu, dtBuCzDCzpTRZtBu, and dMeOCzDCzpTRZtBu.     Association of cartilage-specific deletion of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor Ī³ with abnormal endochondral ossification and impaired cartilage growth and development in a murine model

    Objective Long bones develop through the strictly regulated process of endochondral ossification within the growth plate, resulting in the replacement of cartilage by bone. Defects in this process can result in skeletal abnormalities and a predisposition to degenerative joint diseases such as osteoarthritis (OA). Studies suggest that activation of the transcription factor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor Ī³ (PPARĪ³) is an important therapeutic target in OA. To devise PPARĪ³-related therapies in OA, it is critical to identify the role of this transcription factor in cartilage biology. Therefore, this study sought to determine the in vivo role of PPARĪ³ in endochondral ossification and cartilage development, using cartilage-specific PPARĪ³-knockout (KO) mice. Methods Cartilage-specific PPARĪ³-KO mice were generated using the Cre/loxP system. Histomorphometric and immunohistochemical analyses were performed to assess the patterns of ossification, proliferation, differentiation, and hypertrophy of chondrocytes, skeletal organization, bone density, and calcium deposition in the KO mice. Results PPARĪ³-KO mice exhibited reductions in body length, body weight, length of the long bones, skeletal growth, cellularity, bone density, calcium deposition, and trabecular bone thickness, abnormal organization of the growth plate, loss of columnar organization, shorter hypertrophic zones, and delayed primary and secondary ossification. Immunohistochemical analyses for Sox9, 5-bromo-2\u27-deoxyuridine, p57, type X collagen, and platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule 1 revealed reductions in the differentiation, proliferation, and hypertrophy of chondrocytes and in vascularization of the growth plate in mutant mice. Isolated chondrocytes and cartilage explants from mutant mice showed aberrant expression of Sox9 and extracellular matrix markers, including aggrecan, type II collagen, and matrix metalloproteinase 13. In addition, chondrocytes from mutant mice exhibited enhanced phosphorylation of p38 and decreased expression of Indian hedgehog. Conclusion The presence of PPARĪ³ is required for normal endochondral ossification and cartilage development in vivo. Copyright Ā© 2012 by the American College of Rheumatology
