    Mirror symmetric SU(3)-structure manifolds with NS fluxes

    When string theory is compactified on a six-dimensional manifold with a nontrivial NS flux turned on, mirror symmetry exchanges the flux with a purely geometrical composite NS form associated with lack of integrability of the complex structure on the mirror side. Considering a general class of T^3-fibered geometries admitting SU(3) structure, we find an exchange of pure spinors (e^{iJ} and \Omega) in dual geometries under fiberwise T-duality, and study the transformations of the NS flux and the components of intrinsic torsion. A complementary study of action of twisted covariant derivatives on invariant spinors allows to extend our results to generic geometries and formulate a proposal for mirror symmetry in compactifications with NS flux.Comment: 21 pages, LaTe

    3D Models of Radiatively Driven Colliding Winds In Massive O+O Star Binaries: I. Hydrodynamics

    The dynamics of the wind-wind collision in massive stellar binaries is investigated using three-dimensional hydrodynamical models which incorporate gravity, the driving of the winds, the orbital motion of the stars, and radiative cooling of the shocked plasma. In this first paper we restrict our study to main-sequence O+O binaries. The nature of the wind-wind collision region is highly dependent on the degree of cooling of the shocked plasma, and the ratio of the flow timescale of the shocked plasma to the orbital timescale. The pre-shock wind speeds are lower in close systems as the winds collide prior to their acceleration to terminal speeds. Radiative inhibition may also reduce the pre-shock wind speeds. Together, these effects can lead to rapid cooling of the post-shock gas. Radiative inhibition is less important in wider systems, where the winds are accelerated to higher speeds before they collide, and the resulting collision region can be largely adiabatic. In systems with eccentric orbits, cold gas formed during periastron passage can persist even at apastron, before being ablated and mixed into its surroundings and/or accelerated out of the system.Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    X-rays from Colliding Stellar Winds: the case of close WR+O binary systems

    We have analysed the X-ray emission from a sample of close WR+O binaries using data from the public Chandra and XMM-Newton archives. Global spectral fits show that two-temperature plasma is needed to match the X-ray emission from these objects as the hot component (kT > 2 keV) is an important ingredient of the spectral models. In close WR+O binaries, X-rays likely originate in colliding stellar wind (CSW) shocks driven by the massive winds of the binary components. CSW shocks in these objects are expected to be radiative due to the high density of the plasma in the interaction region. Opposite to this, our analysis shows that the CSW shocks in the sample of close WR+O binaries are adiabatic. This is possible only if the mass-loss rates of the stellar components in the binary are at least one order of magnitude smaller than the values currently accepted. The most likely explanation for the X-ray properties of close WR+O binaries could be that their winds are two-component flows. The more massive component (dense clumps) play role for the optical/UV emission from these objects, while the smooth rarefied component is a key factor for their X-ray emission.Comment: MNRAS, accepted for publication (Feb 6, 2012); 13 pages, 6 figures, 3 table

    Crying and feeding problems in infancy and cognitive outcome in preschool children born at risk : a prospective population study

    Objective: To investigate whether regulatory problems, i.e., crying and feeding problems in infants > 3 months of age, predict cognitive outcome in preschool children born at risk even when controlled for confounding factors. Methods: A prospective longitudinal study of children born in a geographically defined area in Germany. N = 4427 children of 6705 eligible survivors (66%) participated at all four assessment points (neonatal, 5, 20, and 56 months of age). Excessive crying and feeding problems were measured at 5 months. Mental development was assessed with the Griffiths Scale at 20 months, and cognitive assessments were conducted at 56 months. Neonatal complications, neurological, and psychosocial factors were controlled as confounders in structural equation modeling and analyses of variance. Results: One in five infants suffered from single crying or feeding problems, and 2% had multiple regulatory problems, i.e., combined crying and feeding problems at 5 months. In girls, regulatory problems were directly predictive of lower cognition at 56 months, even when controlled for confounders, whereas in boys, the influence on cognition at 56 months was mediated by low mental development at 20 months. Both in boys and girls, shortened gestational age, neonatal neurological complications, and poor parent-infant relationship were predictive of regulatory problems at 5 months and lower cognition at 56 months. Conclusion: Regulatory problems in infancy have a small but significant adverse effect on cognitive development

    Optimization of the design of OMNIS, the observatory of multiflavor neutrinos from supernovae

    A Monte Carlo code has been developed to simulate the operation of the planned detectors in OMNIS, a supernova neutrino observatory. OMNIS will detect neutrinos originating from a core collapse supernova by the detection of spalled neutrons from Pb- or Fe-nuclei. This might be accomplished using Gd-loaded liquid scintillator. Results for the optimum configuration for such modules with respect to both neutron detection efficiency and cost efficiency are presented. Careful consideration has been given to the expected levels of radioactive backgrounds and their effects. The results show that the amount of data to be processed by a software trigger can be reduced to the <10kHz region and a neutron, once produced in the detector, can be detected and identified with an efficiency of >30%.Comment: Elsevier preprint; 29 pages, 23 figure
