    Lading and Weight: Suggested Evidentiary Burdens in Senate Judicial-Nominee Hearings Post-Kavanaugh

    The Senate proceedings occasioned by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s allegation against Justice Brett Kavanaugh left the then-nominee calling them a “circus” and observers confused about who was supposed to prove what and by what standard. Since the Senate is ill-suited to sorting out cases and controversies (and since the Ford-Kavanaugh matter will surely not be the last of its kind), the Senate should adopt standards (burdens of proof) for future judicial-nominee proceedings that it borrows from a sister branch—the judiciary. In any proceeding, the burden must be laded—it must be determined which party has the burden in the first place. It must also be weighted—it must be determined how much of a burden is to be imposed. This lading and weighting takes place with regard to both the burden of making out a colorable claim (the burden of production) and also the threshold for deciding in a party’s favor (the burden of persuasion). Courts often lade the burden of persuasion, in particular, on the party that (a) has the lesser interest at stake, (b) precipitates (as distinguished from initiates) the action, or (c) warrants special suspicion and scrutiny. This Article applies these principles to Senate judicial-nominee proceedings, noting that those proceedings sometimes involve two separate inquiries: (1) the qualification (or general suitability) inquiry, and (2) the inquiry into any allegation of specific and potentially disqualifying wrongdoing. The Article posits that, as to the qualification inquiry, the nominee has the burdens of production and persuasion and must show with convincing evidence that he or she is suitable for office. As to the allegation inquiry, although the accuser should have the burden of producing credible evidence to establish a plausible claim of wrongdoing, sound principles mitigate against the accuser bearing the ultimate burden of persuasion. That burden should rest with the nominee, who must show that the allegation is implausible, incredible, or unreasonable. Finally, this Article proposes a sliding scale for determining the precise threshold of proof required to meet this burden, focusing on the three different levels of federal judicial appointments (district judge, circuit judge, and Supreme Court justice) and accounting for the different interests involved as to each

    Camera Traps (or Wild Cams) enable the automatic collection of large quantities of image data. Biologists all over the world use camera traps to monitor biodiversity and population density of animal species. The computer vision community has been making strides towards automating the species classification challenge in camera traps, but as we try to expand the scope of these models from specific regions where we have collected training data to different areas we are faced with an interesting problem: how do you classify a species in a new region that you may not have seen in previous training data? In order to tackle this problem, we have prepared a dataset and challenge where the training data and test data are from different regions, namely The American Southwest and the American Northwest. We use the Caltech Camera Traps dataset, collected from the American Southwest, as training data. We add a new dataset from the American Northwest, curated from data provided by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG), as our test dataset. The test data has some class overlap with the training data, some species are found in both datasets, but there are both species seen during training that are not seen during test and vice versa. To help fill the gaps in the training species, we allow competitors to utilize transfer learning from two alternate domains: human-curated images from iNaturalist and synthetic images from Microsoft's TrapCam-AirSim simulation environment

The project begins with the initial site investigation phase, which gathers general information about the physical site of proposed construction as well as the requirements of the governing body of the area; applications for permits and inspections for example. Next, phase is the site design which includes creating plans for the building footprint, pavement areas, and utility locations. The next phase in the design will be the building plans which will include floor plans and associated material lists for the construction of the home. Lastly, the time frame and overall cost will be compiled. Each stage of the design and construction planning listed above will be researched and discussed in detail, creating a collaborative and complete plan of constructing a residential home

    2016 FSAE Electric Vehicle Pedal Assembly Design

    The purpose of this project was to design and produce the pedal box assembly for the electric formula SAE racecar team’s 2016 racecar. To complete this project, a working 3D model and corresponding blueprints were created. Materials were selected, machined, and assembled. FEA software was used to verify the design. The final step was manufacturing and assembling all the components together and placing them in the racecar. The precision machining was completed on campus at the University of Akron, and was considered a vital measurable of the project. This assembly allows for the actuation of two aluminum pedals. One pedal applies force to the master cylinders used in the hydraulic braking system. A balance bar is used to allow for the calibration of the hydraulic breaking system. The amount of force applied relative between the front wheels and rear wheels will be calibrated during the testing of the racecar. The other pedal actuates linear potentiometers that are used to gage the acceleration of the racecar. The linear potentiometers will be integrated into the electrical system of the car. The assembly is robust and adaptable. This report explores several different conceptual pedal design solutions. Different basic sketches were created to help visualize the varied ideas and gain input from other potential drivers of the car. The integrating subsystem engineers were consulted with throughout design and manufacturing to insure successful incorporation into the car. This report documents the design process, describes the manufacturing process, and records lessons learned throughout the project
