Scale Dependence of Dark Energy Antigravity
We investigate the effects of negative pressure induced by dark energy
(cosmological constant or quintessence) on the dynamics at various
astrophysical scales. Negative pressure induces a repulsive term (antigravity)
in Newton's law which dominates on large scales. Assuming a value of the
cosmological constant consistent with the recent SnIa data we determine the
critical scale beyond which antigravity dominates the dynamics () and discuss some of the dynamical effects implied. We show that
dynamically induced mass estimates on the scale of the Local Group and beyond
are significantly modified due to negative pressure. We also briefly discuss
possible dynamical tests (eg effects on local Hubble flow) that can be applied
on relatively small scales (a few ) to determine the density and equation

The Physics of Cosmic Acceleration
The discovery that the cosmic expansion is accelerating has been followed by
an intense theoretical and experimental response in physics and astronomy. The
discovery implies that our most basic notions about how gravity work are
violated on cosmological distance scales. One simple fix is the introduction of
a cosmological constant into the field equations for general relativity.
However, the extremely small value of the cosmological constant, relative to
theoretical expectations, has led theorists to explore a wide variety of
alternative explanations that involve the introduction of an exotic
negative-pressure fluid or a modification of general relativity. Here we
briefly review the evidence for cosmic acceleration. We then survey some of the
theoretical attempts to account for it, including the cosmological constant,
quintessence and its variants, mass-varying neutrinos, and modifications of
general relativity, such as scalar-tensor and theories and braneworld
scenarios. We discuss experimental and observational tests that may allow us to

On the unification of dwarf and giant elliptical galaxies
The near orthogonal distributions of dwarf elliptical (dE) and giant
elliptical (E) galaxies in the mu_e-Mag and mu_e-log(R_e) diagrams have been
interpreted as evidence for two distinct galaxy formation processes. However,
continuous, linear relationships across the alleged dE/E boundary at M_B = -18
mag - such as those between central surface brightness (mu_0) and (i) galaxy
magnitude and (ii) light-profile shape (n) - suggest a similar, governing
formation mechanism. Here we explain how these latter two linear trends
necessitate a different behavior for dE and E galaxies, exactly as observed, in
diagrams involving mu_e (and also _e). A natural consequence is that the
distribution of dEs and Es in Fundamental Plane type analyses that use the
associated intensity I_e, or _e, are expected to appear different. Together
with other linear trends across the alleged dE/E boundary, such as those
between luminosity and color, metallicity, and velocity dispersion, it appears
that the dEs form a continuous extension to the E galaxies. The presence of
partially depleted cores in luminous (M_B < -20.5 mag) Es does however signify
the action of a different physical process at the centers (< ~300 pc) of these

The Hubble Constant from Observations of the Brightest Red Giant Stars in a Virgo-Cluster Galaxy
The Virgo and Fornax clusters of galaxies play central roles in determining
the Hubble constant H_0. A powerful and direct way of establishing distances
for elliptical galaxies is to use the luminosities of the brightest red-giant
stars (the TRGB luminosity, at M_I = -4.2). Here we report the direct
observation of the TRGB stars in a dwarf elliptical galaxy in the Virgo
cluster. We find its distance to be 15.7 +- 1.5 Megaparsecs, from which we
estimate a Hubble constant of H_0 = 77 +- 8 km/s/Mpc. Under the assumption of a
low-density Universe with the simplest cosmology, the age of the Universe is no

Elevated Paracellular Glucose Flux across Cystic Fibrosis Airway Epithelial Monolayers Is an Important Factor for Pseudomonas aeruginosa Growth.
People with cystic fibrosis (CF) who develop related diabetes (CFRD) have accelerated pulmonary decline, increased infection with antibiotic-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and increased pulmonary exacerbations. We have previously shown that glucose concentrations are elevated in airway surface liquid (ASL) of people with CF, particularly in those with CFRD. We therefore explored the hypotheses that glucose homeostasis is altered in CF airway epithelia and that elevation of glucose flux into ASL drives increased bacterial growth, with an effect over and above other cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR)-related ASL abnormalities. The aim of this study was to compare the mechanisms governing airway glucose homeostasis in CF and non-CF primary human bronchial epithelial (HBE) monolayers, under normal conditions and in the presence of Ps. aeruginosa filtrate. HBE-bacterial co-cultures were performed in the presence of 5 mM or 15 mM basolateral glucose to investigate how changes in blood glucose, such as those seen in CFRD, affects luminal Ps. aeruginosa growth. Calu-3 cell monolayers were used to evaluate the potential importance of glucose on Ps. aeruginosa growth, in comparison to other hallmarks of the CF ASL, namely mucus hyperviscosity and impaired CFTR-dependent fluid secretions. We show that elevation of basolateral glucose promotes the apical growth of Ps. aeruginosa on CF airway epithelial monolayers more than non-CF monolayers. Ps. aeruginosa secretions elicited more glucose flux across CF airway epithelial monolayers compared to non-CF monolayers which we propose increases glucose availability in ASL for bacterial growth. In addition, elevating basolateral glucose increased Ps. aeruginosa growth over and above any CFTR-dependent effects and the presence or absence of mucus in Calu-3 airway epithelia-bacteria co-cultures. Together these studies highlight the importance of glucose as an additional factor in promoting Ps. aeruginosa growth and respiratory infection in CF disease
MiniBooNE and LSND data: non-standard neutrino interactions in a (3+1) scheme versus (3+2) oscillations
The recently observed event excess in MiniBooNE anti-neutrino data is in
agreement with the LSND evidence for electron anti-neutrino appearance. We
propose an explanation of these data in terms of a (3+1) scheme with a sterile
neutrino including non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI) at neutrino
production and detection. The interference between oscillations and NSI
provides a source for CP violation which we use to reconcile different results
from neutrino and anti-neutrino data. Our best fit results imply NSI at the
level of a few percent relative to the standard weak interaction, in agreement
with current bounds. We compare the quality of the NSI fit to the one obtained
within the (3+1) and (3+2) pure oscillation frameworks. We also briefly comment
on using NSI (in an effective two-flavour framework) to address a possible
difference in neutrino and anti-neutrino results from the MINOS experiment.Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures, discussion improved, new appendix added,

Sea level: measuring the bounding surfaces of the ocean
The practical need to understand sea level along the coasts, such as for safe navigation given the spatially variable tides, has resulted in tide gauge observations having the distinction of being some of the longest instrumental ocean records. Archives of these records, along with geological constraints, have allowed us to identify the century-scale rise in global sea level. Additional data sources, particularly satellite altimetry missions, have helped us to better identify the rates and causes of sea level rise and the mechanisms leading to spatial variability in the observed rates. Analysis of all of the data reveals the need for long-term and stable observation systems to assess accurately the regional changes as well as to improve our ability to estimate future changes in sea level. While information from many scientific disciplines is needed to understand sea level change, this paper focuses on contributions from geodesy and the role of the ocean’s bounding surfaces: the sea surface and the Earth’s crust
Social network analysis shows direct evidence for social transmission of tool use in wild chimpanzees

To date, however, social network analysis of wild populations has been limited to static models that cannot precisely reflect the dynamics of learning, for instance, the impact of multiple observations across time. Here, we present a novel dynamic version of network analysis that is capable of capturing temporal aspects of acquisition-that is, how successive observations by an individual influence its acquisition of the novel behavior. We apply this model to studying the spread of two novel tool-use variants, "moss-sponging'' and "leaf-sponge re-use,'' in the Sonso chimpanzee community of Budongo Forest, Uganda. Chimpanzees are widely considered the most "cultural'' of all animal species, with 39 behaviors suspected as socially acquired, most of them in the domain of tool-use. The cultural hypothesis is supported by experimental data from captive chimpanzees and a range of observational data. However, for wild groups, there is still no direct experimental evidence for social learning, nor has there been any direct observation of social diffusion of behavioral innovations. Here, we tested both a static and a dynamic network model and found strong evidence that diffusion patterns of moss-sponging, but not leaf-sponge re-use, were significantly better explained by social than individual learning. The most conservative estimate of social transmission accounted for 85% of observed events, with an estimated 15-fold increase in learning rate for each time a novice observed an informed individual moss-sponging. We conclude that group-specific behavioral variants in wild chimpanzees can be socially learned, adding to the evidence that this prerequisite for culture originated in a common ancestor of great apes and humans, long before the advent of modern humans.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Automating the Communication of Cybersecurity Knowledge: Multi-Case Study
Cybersecurity is essential for the protection of companies against cyber
threats. Traditionally, cybersecurity experts assess and improve a company's
capabilities. However, many small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) consider
such services not to be affordable. We explore an alternative do-it-yourself
(DIY) approach to bringing cybersecurity to SMBs. Our method and tool, CYSEC,
implements the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to guide and motivate SMBs to
adopt good cybersecurity practices. CYSEC uses assessment questions and
recommendations to communicate cybersecurity knowledge to the end-user SMBs and
encourage self-motivated change. In this paper, the operationalisation of SDT
in CYSEC is presented and the results of a multi-case study shown that offer
insight into how SMBs adopted cybersecurity practices with CYSEC. Effective
automated cybersecurity communication depended on the SMB's hands-on skills,
tools adaptedness, and the users' willingness to documenting confidential
information. The SMBs wanted to learn in simple, incremental steps, allowing
them to understand what they do. An SMB's motivation to improve security
depended on the fitness of assessment questions and recommendations with the
SMB's business model and IT infrastructure. The results of this study indicate
that automated counselling can help many SMBs in security adoption. The final

Quantifying culture gaps between physicians and managers in Dutch hospitals: a survey
Background: The demands in hospitals for safety and quality, combined with limitations in financing health care require effective cooperation between physicians and managers. The complex relationship between both groups has been described in literature. We aim to add a perspective to literature, by developing a questionnaire which provides an opportunity to quantitatively report and elaborate on the size and content of differences between physicians and managers. Insight gained from use of the questionnaire might enable us to reflect on these differences and could provide practical tools to improve cooperation between physicians and managers, with an aim to enhance hospital performance.\ud

Methods: The CG-Questionnaire was developed by adjusting, pre-testing, and shortening Kralewski's questionnaire, and appeared suitable to measure culture gaps. It was shortened by exploratory factor analysis, using principal-axis factoring extraction with Varimax rotation. The CG-Questionnaire was sent to all physicians and managers within 37 Dutch general hospitals. ANOVA and paired sample T-tests were used to determine significant differences between perceptions of daily work practices based in both professional cultures; culture gaps. The size and content of culture gaps were determined with descriptive statistics.\ud

Results: The total response (27%) consisted of 929 physicians and 310 managers. The Cronbachs alpha's were 0.70 - 0.79. Statistical analyses showed many differences; culture gaps were found in the present situation; they were even larger in the preferred situation. Differences between both groups can be classified into three categories: (1) culture gaps in the present situation and not in the preferred, (2) culture gaps in the preferred situation and not in the present, and (3) culture gaps in both situations.\ud

Conclusions: With data from the CG-Questionnaire it is now possible to measure the size and content of culture gaps between physicians and managers in hospitals. Results gained with the CG-Questionnaire enables hospitals to reflect on these differences. Combining the results, we distinguished three categories of increasing complexity. We linked these three categories to three methods from intergroup literature (enhanced information, contact and ultimately meta cognition) which could help to improve the cooperation between physicians and managers
