Metabolic and Endocrine correlates of cognitive function in healthy young women
Obesity has been associated with cognitive decline in longitudinal studies of older individuals. We hypothesized that the cognitive sequelae of obesity may be detectable in the reproductive years. In addition, we explored the hypothesis that these associations may be mediated by the hormonal milieu. In this study of 49 young healthy lean and overweight women aged 20–45, we investigated the association between performance on a battery of cognitive tests, body composition parameters (BMI, total fat, abdominal (visceral, subcutaneous and total) adipose tissue, and muscle), and hormone levels (insulin, adiponectin, leptin, IGF-1, estrogen, testosterone, and vitamin D). We found a significant negative association between both visceral adiposity and muscle, and performance in the domain of verbal learning and memory, after controlling for age and education. Other body composition parameters showed similar trends (0.05<p<0.10). Additionally, the degree of insulin resistance was negatively associated with executive function domain. None of the associations between the other hormones examined (adipokines, IGF-1, gonadal hormones and vitamin D) and cognitive function were significant. These preliminary findings suggest a possible association between obesity and cognitive function in healthy young women of reproductive age. More research is warranted into the potential modulatory effect of insulin resistance on this association
UK paediatricians' attitudes towards the chicken pox vaccine: the SPOTTY study
Objectives
An effective vaccine for chicken pox has been included in immunisation schedules since the 1990s. In the UK the recommendation for routine inclusion came in November 2023; it has not yet been implemented. We explored paediatricians' attitudes towards the vaccine and their personal and professional use; as this has been shown to be an influential factor in parents' vaccine decision making.
Methods
We conducted a cross-sectional online survey using a structured questionnaire exploring attitudes and knowledge towards the chicken pox vaccine of UK based paediatricians between June and September 2023.
Results
We received 272 responses, 211 female (78%), 228 based in England (85%) with remainder in Wales (23), Scotland (8) and Northern Ireland (9); 150 (56%) reporting practicing paediatrics <10 years. The majority (n = 207; 78%) agreed that the chicken pox vaccine should be included in the UK routine schedule. Half the cohort, 52% (n = 135), reported having their own children vaccinated against chicken pox, 73% of those with appropriately aged children. Most, 86% (n = 225), recommended the vaccine to family and friends routinely or when asked; however, 42% (n = 108) did not feel able to advise patients' parents due to insufficient information. Of those who do not recommend the vaccine to family and friends, 22 (59%) reported insufficient information to discuss in a professional setting. Of those who did not think it should be included, or were unsure, 38/55 (69%) also felt they had insufficient information to advise parents regarding the vaccine.
Conclusions
Whilst many paediatricians choose to vaccinate their children and agreed the chicken pox vaccine should be added to the routine schedule, the proportion disagreeing is not insignificant. Targeted education to improve paediatricians' knowledge of the chicken pox vaccine and their confidence discussing it should be implemented prior to the national roll out
Mode of detection and breast cancer mortality by follow-up time and tumor characteristics among screened women in Cancer Prevention Study-II
Purpose: In a screened population, breast cancer-specific mortality is lower for screen-detected versus symptom-detected breast cancers; however, it is unclear whether this association varies by follow-up time and/or tumor characteristics. To further understand the prognostic utility of mode of detection, we examined its association with breast cancer-specific mortality, overall and by follow-up time, estrogen receptor status, tumor size, and grade. Methods: In the Cancer Prevention Study-II Nutrition Cohort, 3975 routinely screened women were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer (1992–2015). Among 2686 screen-detected and 1289 symptom-detected breast cancers, 206 and 209 breast cancer deaths, respectively, occurred up to 24 years post diagnosis. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated from Cox proportional hazard regression models. Results: Controlling for prognostic factors, symptom detection was associated with higher risk of breast cancer-specific death up to 5 years after diagnosis (HR≤5years = 1.88, 95% CI 1.21–2.91) this association was attenuated in subsequent follow-up (HR>5years = 1.26, 95% CI 0.98–1.63). Within tumor characteristic strata, there was a 1.3–2.7-fold higher risk of breast cancer death associated with symptom-detected cancers ≤ 5 years of follow-up, although associations were only significant for women with tumors < 2 cm (HR≤5years = 2.42, 95% CI 1.19–4.93) and for women with grade 1 or 2 tumors (HR≤5years = 2.72, 95% CI 1.33–5.57). In subsequent follow-up, associations were closer to the null. Conclusions: Screen detection is a powerful prognostic factor for short-term survival. Among women who survived at least 5 years after breast cancer diagnosis, other clinical factors may be more predictive of breast cancer survival

Interplay of structural and electronic phase separation in single crystalline La(2)CuO(4.05) studied by neutron and Raman scattering
We report a neutron and Raman scattering study of a single-crystal of
La(2)CuO(4.05) prepared by high temperature electrochemical oxidation. Elastic
neutron scattering measurements show the presence of two phases, corresponding
to the two edges of the first miscibility gap, all the way up to 300 K. An
additional oxygen redistribution, driven by electronic energies, is identified
at 250 K in Raman scattering (RS) experiments by the simultaneous onset of
two-phonon and two-magnon scattering, which are fingerprints of the insulating
phase. Elastic neutron scattering measurements show directly an
antiferromagnetic ordering below a N\'eel temperature of T_N =210K. The opening
of the superconducting gap manifests itself as a redistribution of electronic
Raman scattering below the superconducting transition temperature, T_c = 24K. A
pronounced temperature-dependent suppression of the intensity of the (100)
magnetic Bragg peak has been detected below T_c. We ascribe this phenomenon to
a change of relative volume fraction of superconducting and antiferromagnetic
phases with decreasing temperature caused by a form of a superconducting

Protein-based immune profiles of basal-like vs. luminal breast cancers
Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes play an important, but incompletely understood role in chemotherapy response and prognosis. In breast cancer, there appear to be distinct immune responses by subtype, but most studies have used limited numbers of protein markers or bulk sequencing of RNA to characterize immune response, in which spatial organization cannot be assessed. To identify immune phenotypes of Basal-like vs. Luminal breast cancer we used the GeoMx® (NanoString) platform to perform digital spatial profiling of immune-related proteins in tumor whole sections and tissue microarrays (TMA). Visualization of CD45, CD68, or pan-Cytokeratin by immunofluorescence was used to select regions of interest in formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissue sections. Forty-four antibodies representing stromal markers and multiple immune cell types were applied to quantify the tumor microenvironment. In whole tumor slides, immune hot spots (CD45+) had increased expression of many immune markers, suggesting a diverse and robust immune response. In epithelium-enriched areas, immune signals were also detectable and varied by subtype, with regulatory T-cell (Treg) markers (CD4, CD25, and FOXP3) being higher in Basal-like vs. Luminal breast cancer. Extending these findings to TMAs with more patients (n = 75), we confirmed subtype-specific immune profiles, including enrichment of Treg markers in Basal-likes. This work demonstrated that immune responses can be detected in epithelium-rich tissue, and that TMAs are a viable approach for obtaining important immunoprofiling data. In addition, we found that immune marker expression is associated with breast cancer subtype, suggesting possible prognostic, or targetable differences
Experimental study of high energy electron interactions in a superconducting aluminum alloy resonant bar
Peak amplitude measurements of the fundamental mode of oscillation of a
suspended aluminum alloy bar hit by an electron beam show that the amplitude is
enhanced by a factor ~3.5 when the material is in the superconducting state.
This result is consistent with the cosmic ray observations made by the resonant
gravitational wave detector NAUTILUS, made of the same alloy, when operated in
the superconducting state. A comparison of the experimental data with the
predictions of the model describing the underlying physical process is also
presented
Vibrational excitation induced by electron beam and cosmic rays in normal and superconductive aluminum bars
We report new measurements of the acoustic excitation of an Al5056
superconductive bar when hit by an electron beam, in a previously unexplored
temperature range, down to 0.35 K. These data, analyzed together with previous
results of the RAP experiment obtained for T > 0.54 K, show a vibrational
response enhanced by a factor 4.9 with respect to that measured in the normal
state. This enhancement explains the anomalous large signals due to cosmic rays
previously detected in the NAUTILUS gravitational wave detector.Comment: 28 pages, 13 figure
Observation of Orbitally Excited B_s Mesons
We report the first observation of two narrow resonances consistent with
states of orbitally excited (L=1) B_s mesons using 1 fb^{-1} of ppbar
collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the
Fermilab Tevatron. We use two-body decays into K^- and B^+ mesons reconstructed
as B^+ \to J/\psi K^+, J/\psi \to \mu^+ \mu^- or B^+ \to \bar{D}^0 \pi^+,
\bar{D}^0 \to K^+ \pi^-. We deduce the masses of the two states to be m(B_{s1})
= 5829.4 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2 and m(B_{s2}^*) = 5839.7 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2.Comment: Version accepted and published by Phys. Rev. Let
