    Failure due to fatigue in fiber bundles and solids

    We consider first a homogeneous fiber bundle model where all the fibers have got the same stress threshold beyond which all fail simultaneously in absence of noise. At finite noise, the bundle acquires a fatigue behavior due to the noise-induced failure probability at any stress. We solve this dynamics of failure analytically and show that the average failure time of the bundle decreases exponentially as the stress increases. We also determine the avalanche size distribution during such failure and find a power law decay. We compare this fatigue behavior with that obtained phenomenologically for the nucleation of Griffith cracks. Next we study numerically the fatigue behavior of random fiber bundles having simple distributions of individual fiber strengths, at stress less than the bundle's strength (beyond which it fails instantly). The average failure time is again seen to decrease exponentially as the stress increases and the avalanche size distribution shows similar power law decay. These results are also in broad agreement with experimental observations on fatigue in solids. We believe, these observations regarding the failure time are useful for quantum breakdown phenomena in disordered systems.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, figures added and the text is revise

    Fracture model with variable range of interaction

    We introduce a fiber bundle model where the interaction among fibers is modeled by an adjustable stress-transfer function which can interpolate between the two limiting cases of load redistribution, the global and the local load sharing schemes. By varying the range of interaction several features of the model are numerically studied and a crossover from mean field to short range behavior is obtained. The properties of the two regimes and the emergence of the crossover in between are explored by numerically studying the dependence of the ultimate strength of the material on the system size, the distribution of avalanches of breakings, and of the cluster sizes of broken fibers. Finally, we analyze the moments of the cluster size distributions to accurately determine the value at which the crossover is observed.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures. Two columns revtex format.     Toward an internally consistent astronomical distance scale

    Accurate astronomical distance determination is crucial for all fields in astrophysics, from Galactic to cosmological scales. Despite, or perhaps because of, significant efforts to determine accurate distances, using a wide range of methods, tracers, and techniques, an internally consistent astronomical distance framework has not yet been established. We review current efforts to homogenize the Local Group's distance framework, with particular emphasis on the potential of RR Lyrae stars as distance indicators, and attempt to extend this in an internally consistent manner to cosmological distances. Calibration based on Type Ia supernovae and distance determinations based on gravitational lensing represent particularly promising approaches. We provide a positive outlook to improvements to the status quo expected from future surveys, missions, and facilities.     Prediction of a Z(c)(4000) state and relationship with the claimed Z(c)(4025)

    After discussing the OZI suppression of one light meson exchange in the interaction of with isospin I = 1 , we study the contribution of the two-pion exchange to the interaction and the exchange of heavy vectors, J/psi for diagonal transitions and D-* for transitions of to J/psi rho. We find these latter mechanisms to be weak, but enough to barely bind the system in J = 2 with a mass around 4000 MeV, while the effect of the two-pion exchange is a net attraction, though weaker than that from heavy-vector exchange. We discuss this state and try to relate it to the Z (c) (4025) state, above the threshold, claimed in an experiment at BES from an enhancement of the distribution close to threshold. Together with the results from a recent reanalysis of the BES experiment showing that it is compatible with a J = 2 state below threshold around 3990 MeV, we conclude that the BES experiment could show the existence of the state that we find in our approach

    Prospective observational cohort study of the association between antiplatelet therapy, bleeding and thrombosis in patients with coronary stents undergoing noncardiac surgery

    Background: The perioperative management of antiplatelet therapy in noncardiac surgery patients who have undergone previous percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) remains a dilemma. Continuing dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) may carry a risk of bleeding, while stopping antiplatelet therapy may increase the risk of perioperative major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). Methods: Occurrence of Bleeding and Thrombosis during Antiplatelet Therapy In Non-Cardiac Surgery (OBTAIN) was an international prospective multicentre cohort study of perioperative antiplatelet treatment, MACE, and serious bleeding in noncardiac surgery. The incidences of MACE and bleeding were compared in patients receiving DAPT, monotherapy, and no antiplatelet therapy before surgery. Unadjusted risk ratios were calculated taking monotherapy as the baseline. The adjusted risks of bleeding and MACE were compared in patients receiving monotherapy and DAPT using propensity score matching. Results: A total of 917 patients were recruited and 847 were eligible for inclusion. Ninety-six patients received no antiplatelet therapy, 526 received monotherapy with aspirin, and 225 received DAPT. Thirty-two patients suffered MACE and 22 had bleeding. The unadjusted risk ratio for MACE in patients receiving DAPT compared with monotherapy was 1.9 (0.93–3.88), P=0.08. There was no difference in MACE between no antiplatelet treatment and monotherapy 1.03 (0.31–3.46), P=0.96. Bleeding was more frequent with DAPT 6.55 (2.3–17.96) P=0.0002. In a propensity matched analysis of 177 patients who received DAPT and 177 monotherapy patients, the risk ratio for MACE with DAPT was 1.83 (0.69–4.85), P=0.32. The risk of bleeding was significantly greater in the DAPT group 4.00 (1.15–13.93), P=0.031. Conclusions: OBTAIN showed an increased risk of bleeding with DAPT and found no evidence for protective effects of DAPT from perioperative MACE in patients who have undergone previous PCI

    Mendelian randomization supports bidirectional causality between telomere length and clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential

    Human genetic studies support an inverse causal relationship between leukocyte telomere length (LTL) and coronary artery disease (CAD), but directionally mixed effects for LTL and diverse malignancies. Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), characterized by expansion of hematopoietic cells bearing leukemogenic mutations, predisposes both hematologic malignancy and CAD. TERT (which encodes telomerase reverse transcriptase) is the most significantly associated germline locus for CHIP in genome-wide association studies. Here, we investigated the relationship between CHIP, LTL, and CAD in the Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program (n = 63,302) and UK Biobank (n = 47,080). Bidirectional Mendelian randomization studies were consistent with longer genetically imputed LTL increasing propensity to develop CHIP, but CHIP then, in turn, hastens to shorten measured LTL (mLTL). We also demonstrated evidence of modest mediation between CHIP and CAD by mLTL. Our data promote an understanding of potential causal relationships across CHIP and LTL toward prevention of CAD
