    A PIV comparison of the flow field and wall shear stress in rigid and compliant models of healthy carotid arteries

    Certain systems relevant to circulatory disease have walls which are neither rigid nor static, for example, the coronary arteries, the carotid artery and the heart chambers. In vitro modeling allows the fluid mechanics of the circulatory system to be studied without the ethical and safety issues associated with animal and human experiments. Computational methods in which the equations are coupled governing the flow and the elastic walls are maturing. Currently there is a lack of experimental data in compliant arterial systems to validate the numerical predictions. Previous experimental work has commonly used rigid wall boundaries, ignoring the effect of wall compliance. Particle Image Velocimetry is used to provide a direct comparison of both the flow field and wall shear stress (WSS) observed in experimental phantoms of rigid and compliant geometries representing an idealized common carotid artery. The input flow waveform and the mechanical response of the phantom are physiologically realistic. The results show that compliance affects the velocity profile within the artery. A rigid boundary causes severe overestimation of the peak WSS with a maximum relative difference of 61% occurring; showing compliance protects the artery from exposure to high magnitude WSS. This is important when trying to understand the development of diseases like atherosclerosis. The maximum, minimum and time averaged WSS in the rigid geometry was 2.3, 0.51 and 1.03Pa and in the compliant geometry 1.4, 0.58 and 0.84Pa, respectively

    We introduce the universal functorial equivariant Lefschetz invariant for endomorphisms of finite proper G-CW-complexes, where G is a discrete group. We use K_0 of the category of "phi-endomorphisms of finitely generated free RPi(G,X)-modules".     Análisis comparativo entre un tutor circular y uno monolateral en elongaciones óseas

    El presente trabajo compara la funcionalidad de dos tutores externos utilizados para elongación: el del Dr. Ilizarov y el tutor HG, desarrollado en nuestra institución. De 131 pacientes tratados con elongación ósea en 147 huesos largos se seleccionaron al azar 25 huesos por cada aparato anteriormente mencionado. Para objetivar los resultados se registraron estadísticamente variables independientes y dependientes en sus características subjetivas y objetivas, tales como: edad, sexo, tipo de hueso elongado, tolerancia psíquica, sensación de confort, facilidad de higiene y control, las infecciones, las rigideces articulares por retracción músculo tendinosa, y la deformación ósea residual. El objetivo fue comparar y establecer si el cambio en la elección del sistema fue ventajoso para nuestros pacientes. En el intento comparativo se enfrentaron dos variables, que a nuestro criterio eran las más importantes para establecer diferencias: la calidad del callo del hueso sometido a elongación y la presencia de complicaciones tanto transitorias como definitivas.In this work we compare the results obtained with two different external fixation devices in patients undergoing bone lengthening. The devices studied were the Ilizarov type and the HG, an apparatons developed in our institution. Out of 131 patientes treated by bone lengthening in 147 long bones, 25 bones lengthened with each device were selected at random. Different subjective and objective variables were assessed: age, sex, type of bone, psichological tolerance, patients, confort, nursing, infections, joint stiffness due to musculotendinous retractions, and residual bone deformity. The aim of the study was to analyze if the monolateral frame entailed advantages for our patients. Two main factors were more deeply analysed, namely the quality of the bone callus subjected to lengthening and the presence of both transitory and definitive complications

    The Wolbachia strain wAu provides highly efficient virus transmission blocking in Aedes aegypti

    Introduced transinfections of the inherited bacteria Wolbachia can inhibit transmission of viruses by Aedes mosquitoes, and in Ae. aegypti are now being deployed for dengue control in a number of countries. Only three Wolbachia strains from the large number that exist in nature have to date been introduced and characterized in this species. Here novel Ae. aegypti transinfections were generated using the wAlbA and wAu strains. In its native Ae. albopictus, wAlbA is maintained at lower density than the co-infecting wAlbB, but following transfer to Ae. aegypti the relative strain density was reversed, illustrating the strain-specific nature of Wolbachia-host co-adaptation in determining density. The wAu strain also reached high densities in Ae. aegypti, and provided highly efficient transmission blocking of dengue and Zika viruses. Both wAu and wAlbA were less susceptible than wMel to density reduction/incomplete maternal transmission resulting from elevated larval rearing temperatures. Although wAu does not induce cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI), it was stably combined with a CI-inducing strain as a superinfection, and this would facilitate its spread into wild populations. Wolbachia wAu provides a very promising new option for arbovirus control, particularly for deployment in hot tropical climates

    Adhesive bonding of copper prepared by laser-interference near the interference structuring limits

    Adhesive bonding requires adequate surface preparation for ensuring an appropriate joint quality. The interest in adhesive joining has recently expanded to thermal systems having a large number of joints employed for manufacturing and assembly. This study presents surface topology of copper 110 produced by a laser-interference setup that would theoretically yield a periodicity of 1.7 mm, which is near the 1.6-2 mm structuring limit that was estimated based on thermal diffusion length scale for an 8 ns laser pulse. The results show that although the expected periodic interference structuring was not attained, the melt-induced texturing was affected by the laser-interference profile. Single-lap shear tests are performed with specimen surfaces prepared by traditional abrasion and laser interference structuring methods. Several laser processing parameters, such as the laser spot size, density, number of pulses, and raster speed were studied. Scanning electron microscope and profilometry measurements were used to characterize the processed surface microstructures. Web-like structures, which indicate widespread melting, were shown to be formed at different processing conditions. Based on the surface topologies investigated, two laser raster speeds were selected to make single-lap-joint specimens. Baseline joints were prepared by abrading joining specimens. The shear-lap strength and displacement at maximum load were shown to be higher by 16.8% and 43.8% for the laser-structured specimens than those of the baseline specimens, respectively. Moreover, the load-displacement curves indicate that the laser-structured joints are more ductile than those without laser-structuring. The increase ductility for the laser-structured joints was found to yield an increase in the energy absorbed during shear-lap testing of approximately of 80-90% over those measured for baseline joints. It is another indicator that laser-interference structuring enhanced the bonding performance of single-lap shear joints

    Fabrication of a compliant phantom of the human aortic arch for use in Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) experimentation

    Compliant phantoms of the human aortic arch can mimic patient specific cardiovascular dysfunctions in vitro. Hence, phantoms may enable elucidation of haemodynamic disturbances caused by aortic dysfunction. This paper describes the fabrication of a thin-walled silicone phantom of the human ascending aorta and brachiocephalic artery. The model geometry was determined via a meta-analysis and modelled in SolidWorks before 3D printing. The solid model surface was smoothed and scanned with a 3D scanner. An offset outer mould was milled from Ebalta S-Model board. The final phantom indicated that ABS was a suitable material for the internal model, the Ebalta S-Model board yielded a rough external surface. Co-location of the moulds during silicone pour was insufficient to enable consistent wall thickness. The resulting phantom was free of air bubbles but did not have the desired wall thickness consistency

    Link between increased gut hormones signaling satiety and reduced food reward following gastric bypass surgery for obesity

    CONTEXT: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery is an effective long-term intervention for weight loss maintenance, reducing appetite, and also food reward, via unclear mechanisms. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of elevated satiety gut hormones after RYGB, we examined food hedonic-reward responses after their acute post-prandial suppression. DESIGN: These were randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover experimental medicine studies. PATIENTS: Two groups, more than 5 months after RYGB for obesity (n = 7-11), compared with nonobese controls (n = 10), or patients after gastric banding (BAND) surgery (n = 9) participated in the studies. INTERVENTION: Studies were performed after acute administration of the somatostatin analog octreotide or saline. In one study, patients after RYGB, and nonobese controls, performed a behavioral progressive ratio task for chocolate sweets. In another study, patients after RYGB, and controls after BAND surgery, performed a functional magnetic resonance imaging food picture evaluation task. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Octreotide increased both appetitive food reward (breakpoint) in the progressive ratio task (n = 9), and food appeal (n = 9) and reward system blood oxygen level-dependent signal (n = 7) in the functional magnetic resonance imaging task, in the RYGB group, but not in the control groups. RESULTS: Octreotide suppressed postprandial plasma peptide YY, glucagon-like peptide-1, and fibroblast growth factor-19 after RYGB. The reduction in plasma peptide YY with octreotide positively correlated with the increase in brain reward system blood oxygen level-dependent signal in RYGB/BAND subjects, with a similar trend for glucagon-like peptide-1. CONCLUSIONS: Enhanced satiety gut hormone responses after RYGB may be a causative mechanism by which anatomical alterations of the gut in obesity surgery modify behavioral and brain reward responses to food

    Fluorescence spectroscopy on a series of aqueous solutions of poly(acrylic acid) containing a luminescent label showed that polymers with molar mass, Mn < 16.5 kDa did not exhibit a pH responsive conformational change, which is typical of higher molar mass poly(acrylic acid). Below this molar mass, polymers remained in an extended conformation, regardless of pH. Above this molar mass, a pH-dependent conformational change was observed. Diffusion-ordered nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy confirmed that low molar mass polymers did not undergo a conformational transition, although large molar mass polymers did exhibit pH-dependent diffusion
