Relationship between Bone Quality, Egg Production and Eggshell Quality in Laying Hens at the End of an Extended Production Cycle (105 Weeks)
(1) Background: Nowadays the industry aims to improve lay persistency for extended
cycles (100 weeks or longer) to make egg production more sustainable. However, intensive egg proâ
duction challenges hen health, inducing severe osteoporosis and the incidence of bone fractures. In
this study, the relationship between bone quality and egg production, and/or eggshell quality, was
evaluated at the end of an extended laying cycle of 100 weeks, comparing groups of hens with difâ
ferent production and eggshell quality parameters; (2) Methods: Quality parameters of egg (as
weight, egg white height), eggshell (as thickness, weight, breaking strength, elasticity and microâ
structure) and tibiae bone (weight, diameter, cortical thickness, ash weight, breaking strength, meâ
dullary bone) were determined; (3) Results: Hens from groups with a high egg production and good
eggshell quality have poorer bone quality (lower ash weight and lesser amount of medullary bone).
However, Pearsonâs correlation analysis shows no clearrelationship between bone and egg/eggshell
parameters. (4) Conclusions: Bone and egg production/eggshell quality are independent and can be
improved separately. Medullary bone has an important contribution to bone mechanical properties,
being important to accumulate enough bone medullary bone early in life to maintain skeletal integâ

A story of a lone star tick: an imported case of Amblyomma americanum (Linnaeus, 1758) infected with Rickettsia amblyommatis that parasitized a US traveler returning to Mexico
In this study, we report the presence of a female Amblyomma americanum tick attached to a former resident of the East Coast of the United States who moved to Mexico city. The amplification and sequencing of gene fragments of the 16S-rDNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 corroborated the identification of the species of the tick. Additionally, the presence of DNA of Rickettsia amblyommatis was confirmed. This work is the first report of an exotic tick of the genus Amblyomma in a traveler from the US to Mexico and represents the second record of an imported tick attached to humans in Mexico
Playing with the weakest supramolecular interactions in a 3D crystalline hexakis[60]fullerene induces control over hydrogenation selectivity
Weak forces can play an essential role in chemical reactions. Controlling such subtle forces inreorganization processes by applying thermal or chemical stimuli represents a novel synthetic strategyand one of the main targets in supramolecular chemistry. Actually, to separate the differentsupramolecular contributions to the stability of the 3D assemblies is still a major challenge. Therefore,a clear differentiation of these contributions would help in understanding the intrinsic nature as well asthe chemical reactivity of supramolecular ensembles. In the present work, a controlled reorganization ofan hexakis[60]fullerene-based molecular compound purely governed by the weakest van der Waalsinteractions known,i.e.the dihydrogen interaction-usually called stickyfingers-is illustrated. This pre-reorganization of the hexakis[60]fullerene under mild conditions allows a further selective hydrogenationof the crystalline materialviahydrazine vapors exposure. This unique two-step transformation process ismonitored by single-crystal to single-crystal diffraction (SCSC) which allows the direct observation of themolecular movements in the lattice and the subsequent solid-gas hydrogenation reaction
Changes with age (from 0 to 37 D) in tibiae bone mineralization, chemical composition and structural organization in broiler chickens
Broiler chickens have an extreme physiology
(rapid growth rates) that challenges the correct
bone mineralization, being an interesting animal
model for studying the development of bone pathologies.
This work studies in detail how the mineralization,
chemistry, and structural organization of tibiae
bone in broiler chickens change with age during the
first 5 wk (37 D) from hatching until acquiring the final
weight for slaughter. During the early growth phase
(first 2 wk), the rapid addition of bone tissue does not
allow for bone organic matrix to fully mineralize and
mature, and seems to be a critical period for bone development
at which bone mineralization cannot keep
pace with the rapid growth of bones. The low degree
of bone mineralization and large porosity of cortical
bone at this period might be responsible of leg deformation
and/or other skeletal abnormalities commonly
observed in these birds. Later, cortical bone porosity
gradually decreases and the cortical bone became fully
mineralized (65%) at 37 D of age. At the same time,
bone mineral acquires the composition of mature bone
tissue (decreased amount of carbonate, higher crystallinity,
Ca/P = 1.68)
Serum angiopoietin-like 3 levels are elevated in obese non diabetic men but are unaffected during an oral glucose tolerance test
This study aimed to determine ANGPTL3 serum levels in healthy young lean and obese non-diabetic men during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and correlate them with anthropometric, biochemical and hormonal parameters. A caseâcontrol study was carried out and 30 young obese non-diabetic (23.90 ± 3.84 years and BMI 37.92 ± 4.85 kg/m2) and 28 age-matched healthy lean (24.56 ± 3.50 years and BMI of 22.10 ± 1.72 kg/m2) men were included in this study. The primary outcome measures were serum basal ANGPTL3 and ANGPTL3âarea under the curve (AUC) levels. The percentage of body fat was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and biochemical, hormonal and insulin resistance indices were determined. Basal ANGPTL3 and ANGPTL3âAUC levels were significantly elevated (p < 0.05) in young obese subjects compared with lean subjects and were positively and significantly associated with different anthropometric measurements. Fasting ANGPTL3 serum levels were positively correlated with fasting insulin, leptin, Leptin/Adiponectin index and triglycerideâglucose index. Moreover, ANGPTL3âAUC was negatively correlated with Matsuda index. In this regard, chronically high ANGPTL3 levels in young obese subjects might favor triglyceride-rich lipoprotein clearance to replenish triglyceride stores by white adipose tissue rather than oxidative tissues.Fil: GarcĂ©s, Maria Fernanda. Morbid liver manifestations are intrinsically bound to metabolic syndrome and nutrient intake based on a machine-learning cluster analysis
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is one of the most important medical problems around the world. Identification of patient ' s singular characteristic could help to reduce the clinical impact and facilitate individualized management. This study aimed to categorize MetS patients using phenotypical and clinical variables habitually collected during health check-ups of individuals considered to have high cardiovascular risk. The selected markers to categorize MetS participants included anthropometric variables as well as clinical data, biochemical parameters and prescribed pharmacological treatment. An exploratory factor analysis was carried out with a subsequent hierarchical cluster analysis using the z-scores from factor analysis. The first step identified three different factors. The first was determined by hypercholesterolemia and associated treatments, the second factor exhibited glycemic disorders and accompanying treatments and the third factor was characterized by hepatic enzymes. Subsequently four clusters of patients were identified, where cluster 1 was characterized by glucose disorders and treatments, cluster 2 presented mild MetS, cluster 3 presented exacerbated levels of hepatic enzymes and cluster 4 highlighted cholesterol and its associated treatments Interestingly, the liver status related cluster was characterized by higher protein consumption and cluster 4 with low polyunsaturated fatty acid intake. This research emphasized the potential clinical relevance of hepatic impairments in addition to MetS traditional characterization for precision and personalized management of MetS patients
Clonal chromosomal mosaicism and loss of chromosome Y in elderly men increase vulnerability for SARS-CoV-2
The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) had an estimated overall case fatality ratio of 1.38% (pre-vaccination), being 53% higher in males and increasing exponentially with age. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, we found 133 cases (1.42%) with detectable clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations (mCA) and 226 males (5.08%) with acquired loss of chromosome Y (LOY). Individuals with clonal mosaic events (mCA and/or LOY) showed a 54% increase in the risk of COVID-19 lethality. LOY is associated with transcriptomic biomarkers of immune dysfunction, pro-coagulation activity and cardiovascular risk. Interferon-induced genes involved in the initial immune response to SARS-CoV-2 are also down-regulated in LOY. Thus, mCA and LOY underlie at least part of the sex-biased severity and mortality of COVID-19 in aging patients. Given its potential therapeutic and prognostic relevance, evaluation of clonal mosaicism should be implemented as biomarker of COVID-19 severity in elderly people. Reducing the environmental impact of surgery on a global scale: systematic review and co-prioritization with healthcare workers in 132 countries
Abstract
Background
Healthcare cannot achieve net-zero carbon without addressing operating theatres. The aim of this study was to prioritize feasible interventions to reduce the environmental impact of operating theatres.
Methods
This study adopted a four-phase Delphi consensus co-prioritization methodology. In phase 1, a systematic review of published interventions and global consultation of perioperative healthcare professionals were used to longlist interventions. In phase 2, iterative thematic analysis consolidated comparable interventions into a shortlist. In phase 3, the shortlist was co-prioritized based on patient and clinician views on acceptability, feasibility, and safety. In phase 4, ranked lists of interventions were presented by their relevance to high-income countries and lowâmiddle-income countries.
Results
In phase 1, 43 interventions were identified, which had low uptake in practice according to 3042 professionals globally. In phase 2, a shortlist of 15 intervention domains was generated. In phase 3, interventions were deemed acceptable for more than 90 per cent of patients except for reducing general anaesthesia (84 per cent) and re-sterilization of âsingle-useâ consumables (86 per cent). In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for high-income countries were: introducing recycling; reducing use of anaesthetic gases; and appropriate clinical waste processing. In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for lowâmiddle-income countries were: introducing reusable surgical devices; reducing use of consumables; and reducing the use of general anaesthesia.
Conclusion
This is a step toward environmentally sustainable operating environments with actionable interventions applicable to both highâ and lowâmiddleâincome countries

Diferencias de la polĂtica salarial en una empresa agroindustrial de la provincia de Trujillo â 2020
La presente investigaciĂłn tiene como objetivo describir la polĂtica salarial en una
empresa agroindustrial de la provincia de Trujillo 2020. Se utilizó un diseño
descriptivo simple y para ello se trabajĂł con una muestra de 30 colaboradores, se
aplicĂł un muestreo probabilĂstico; asimismo la tĂ©cnica es la encuesta y el
instrumento utilizado es el cuestionario elaborado por los investigadores, asimismo
validado por tres expertos en el tema y constĂł de 10 preguntas. Los resultados
fueron procesados en el programa Excel y se concluye que existe diferencias de la
polĂtica salarial en la empresa agroindustrial de la provincia de Trujillo, ademĂĄs la
mayor parte indica que si son equitativos, referente a sus salario e inclusiĂłn de
prestaciones y beneficios sociales, estos indican que si perciben este beneficio. Por
Ășltimo, los trabajadores de la empresa han negociado el salario y en un porcentaje
medio, el salario de estos trabajadores no satisface la necesidad personal ni
familiar.The objective of this research is to describe the salary policy in an agro-industrial
company in the province of Trujillo 2020. A simple descriptive design was used and
for this purpose a sample of 30 collaborators was used, a probabilistic sampling was
applied; likewise the technique is the survey and the instrument used is the
questionnaire created by the researchers, also validated by three experts on the
subject and consisted of 10 questions. The results were processed in the excel
program and it is concluded that there are differences in the salary policy in the agro industrial company in the province of Trujillo, also most of them indicate that if they
are equitable, in terms of their salary and inclusion of benefits and social benefits
