    Enhancing Localized Pesticide Action through Plant Foliage by Silver-Cellulose Hybrid Patches

    Efficacy and efficiency of pesticide application in the field through the foliage still face many challenges. There exists a mismatch between the hydrophobic character of the leaf and the active molecule, low dispersion of the pesticides on the leaves' surface, runoff loss, and rolling down of the active molecules to the field, decreasing their efficacy and increasing their accumulation to the soil. We produced bacterial cellulose-silver nanoparticles (BC-AgNPs) hybrid patches by in situ thermal reduction under microwave irradiation in a scalable manner and obtaining AgNPs strongly anchored to the BC. Those hybrids increase the interaction of the pesticide (AgNPs) with the foliage and avoids runoff loss and rolling down of the nanoparticles. The positive antibacterial and antifungal properties were assessed in vitro against the bacteria Escherichia coli and two agro-economically relevant pathogens: the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae and the fungus Botrytis cinerea. We showed in vivo inhibition of the infection in Nicotiana benthamiana and tomato leaves, as proven by the suppression of the expression of defense molecular markers and reactive oxygen species production.     Antimutagenic effect of Phyllanthus orbicularis against γ-radiation

    The present work evaluated the protective effect of aqueous extract of Phyllanthus orbicularis against the mutagenicity of γ-radiation. The extract activity was determined in pre- and post-treatment procedures using Salmonella reversion assay. In either case, the plant extract protected bacterial cells against the mutations induced by γ-radiation, suggesting that it contains antimutagenic compounds which confer protection by at least two different mechanisms: i) as antioxidants targeting the oxidative mutagens induced by γ-radiation and ii) by modulation of the cellular repair enzymes acting on damaged DNA.     A new role for circulating T follicular helper cells in humoral response to anti-PD-1 therapy

    Background Lung cancer is one of the most frequent malignancies in humans and is a major cause of death. A number of therapies aimed at reinforcing antitumor immune response, including antiprogrammed cell death protein 1 (anti-PD-1) antibodies, are successfully used to treat several neoplasias as non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, host immune mechanisms that participate in response to anti-PD-1 therapy are not completely understood. Methods We used a syngeneic immunocompetent mouse model of NSCLC to analyze host immune response to anti-PD-1 treatment in secondary lymphoid organs, peripheral blood and tumors, by flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). In addition, we also studied specific characteristics of selected immune subpopulations in ex vivo functional assays. Results We show that anti-PD-1 therapy induces a population of circulating T follicular helper cells (cTfh) with enhanced B activation capacity, which participates in tumor response to treatment. Anti-PD-1 increases the number of tertiary lymphoid structures (TLS), which correlates with impaired tumor growth. Of note, TLS support cTfh-associated local antibody production, which participates in host immune response against tumor.     El Monasterio de Raíces (Castrillón, Asturias): Estudio petrográfico de los materiales de construcción

    This work synthesizes the data collected in the analysis of the petreal materials used in construction of the Monastery of Santa María de Raíces in Asturias. The most probable area of origin of those is show with the purpose to identify the transport done during its construction. Macroscopic and microscopic petrologic analysis and bibliographic and field study allow to conclude that there exists a great litologic variability. Carbonated and siliciclastic materials are show, with ages ranging from Devonic to Jurasic. Possible supply areas are proposed, belonging in most cases to close surroundings, inferior to 7 km

    Health Impact Assessment (HIA) of a fluvial environment recovery project in a medium-sized spanish town

    Introduction: The Interdepartamental Public Health Plan of Catalonia (2014) seeks to enforce Health in All Policies (HiAP) at the regional and local levels. Within this context, the City Council of Sant Andreu de la Barca (SAB), the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (MAB), and the Public Health Agency of Catalonia started a Health Impact Assessment (HIA) of an urbanistic redesign of the Llobregat fluvial area in SAB, the results of which are presented in this paper. Methodology: In 2018, after a HIA screening, a prospective nonquantitative HIA was conducted. Politicians, professionals, and citizens participated in identifying potential impacts. Impacts were prioritized and linked to health determinants, scientific evidence, and potentially affected social groups. Afterwards, recommendations were formulated in order to improve the health impacts of the project. Finally, indicators were selected to evaluate HIA implementation. Results: The HIA was successfully implemented with the participation of technicians and citizens of SAB. The health impacts identified were mainly related to environmental, public safety, lifestyle, socioeconomic, and political contexts. Ten recommendations were defined to minimize the potential negative health impacts of the project, with six of them directly included and only one dismissed due to incompatibility. Conclusion: A HIA was successfully carried out in the medium-sized town of Catalonia, promoting Health in all Policies at a local level and improving health impacts of an urbanistic project

    Shadow-band radiometer measurement of diffuse solar irradiance: Calculation of geometrical and total correction factors

    Among the various methods of measuring diffuse solar irradiance, shadowing devices are ones of the most commonly used in solar research all over the world. These instruments work with a basic pyranometer, properly calibrated for the measurement of solar irradiance, with a shadowing element, which can be a disk or a band (Drummond’s shadow-band), that prevents the direct incidence of solar beam irradiance on the sensor. This method is capable of precise measurements, but sensor outputs have to be corrected, so as to quantify the amount of diffuse irradiance that the band blocks from reaching the sensor. Several authors have advanced different expressions for this correction factor, most of which only apply to horizontal and equator-oriented tilting pyranometers. In this work, we present a general approach to calculate the geometrical correction factor for a tilted sensor, oriented towards all possible azimuth and zenith angles, which permits the measurement of solar diffuse irradiance on any tilted and oriented surfaces. Furthermore, five total correction models are adapted for measurement in any given direction and evaluated on vertical walls pointing the four cardinal directions. Our results show that geometrical correction improves the Mean Bias Difference (MBD), the Root Mean Squared Difference (RMSD) and the l0:99 statistics by 60%, 62% and 56%, respectively, in contrast with the raw data. The LeBaron et al. model gives the most accurate figure for total correction according to MBD, RMSD and l0:99 statistics, with promising average performances of 97%, 91%, and 96%, respectivelySpanish Government (grant ENE2011-27511

    E-Health Treatments for Dual Disorders on Pregnancy

    Introduction Dual pathology during pregnancy, described as the co-occurrence of substance use and mental health problems, is one of the leading preventable causes of maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity; however, effective and accessible treatments are lacking. Objectives As part of the WOMAP(Woman Mental Health and Addictions on Pregnancy) initiative, our study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an e-health-based psychotherapeutic program compared to enhanced usual care. Methods This effectiveness randomized clinical trial was conducted between 2016-2020 in 5 hospitals in the Madrid(Spain) metropolitan area. 2014 pregnant women under 26 weeks of pregnancy were screened. Eligible participants(n=120) were those who screened positive for co-occurring symptoms(AC-OK screener) and were not receiving specialized behavioral treatment. Participants were assessed in depth at baseline, 2,4,8 and 12 months(PHQ-9;GAD-7;PCL-5;AUDIT;DAST;Fagerström) and randomized to the usual care control group(n=38) or to two groups of a 10-session pregnancy-adapted psychotherapeutic program, one delivered by App/internet(n=41) and one by telephone(n=41). Intent-to-treat analyses assessed effectiveness. Results Statistically significant effects of the intervention were found for mental health symptoms in the telephone group as compared to the control and App/internet groups, with an improvement effect starting earlier(2 months) and lasting longer(figures 1-3). Regarding substance use, due to the lack of other substances consumption, only smoking and alcohol cessation rates were analyzed. Patients in the App/internet and telephone groups discontinued significantly more, earlier and for a longer period compared to the control group(figures 4-5). Conclusions E-health psychotherapeutic programs could benefit pregnant women with dual disorders. An App/internet implementation could only be useful if focused solely on substances.2021-2

    Clinical Usefulness of Anthropometric Indices to Predict the Presence of Prediabetes. Data from the ILERVAS Cohort

    Prediabetes is closely related to excess body weight and adipose distribution. For this reason, we aimed to assess and compare the diagnostic usefulness of ten anthropometric adiposity indices to predict prediabetes. Cross-sectional study with 8188 overweight subjects free of type 2 diabetes from the ILERVAS project (NCT03228459). Prediabetes was diagnosed by levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). Total body adiposity indices [BMI, Clínica Universidad de Navarra-Body Adiposity Estimator (CUN-BAE) and Deurenberg's formula] and abdominal adiposity (waist and neck circumferences, conicity index, waist to height ratio, Bonora's equation, A body shape index, and body roundness index) were calculated. The area under the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve, the best cutoff and the prevalence of prediabetes around this value were calculated for every anthropometric index. All anthropometric indices other than the A body adiposity were higher in men and women with prediabetes compared with controls (p < 0.001 for all). In addition, a slightly positive correlation was found between indices and HbA1c in both sexes (r ≤ 0.182 and p ≤ 0.026 for all). None of the measures achieved acceptable levels of discrimination in ROC analysis (area under the ROC ≤ 0.63 for all). Assessing BMI, the prevalence of prediabetes among men increased from 20.4% to 36.2% around the cutoff of 28.2 kg/m2, with similar data among women (from 29.3 to 44.8% with a cutoff of 28.6 kg/m2). No lonely obesity index appears to be the perfect biomarker to use in clinical practice to detect individuals with prediabetes.This work was supported by grants from the Diputació de Lleida and Generalitat de Catalunya (2017SGR696 and SLT0021600250).
